Vintage by the Sea in Marske to feature on BBC Antiques Road Trip

The Vintage by the Sea boutique shared the news with customers on January 17, confirming it will close on February 7 after three years of trading.

The shop previously took to social media in October in a “last ditch attempt to stay open” following low footfall.

In a statement posted on Facebook, owner Clare Smith said: “With a heavy heart we want to let you know that Vintage by the Sea in Marske will be closing its doors on February 7, 2026.”

The 58-year-old from Saltburn said the shop will feature for a second time on the popular BBC series Antiques Road Trip, airing on the week commencing February 23.

Clare said the timing of the programme is “bittersweet”.

She said: “It’s been a really heart wrenching time for us because we’ve put so much work into this shop and have been here for three years.

“We were doing really well up until last summer – we’d built up a strong customer base and we were even planning to add a tearoom at the back of the shop.”

However, Clare believes later construction work outside the shop led to a dramatic decline in footfall and the business suffered.

The business owner first appeared on Antiques Road Trip two years ago after being approached while the programme was filming in the North East. She hopes the upcoming episode, which was filmed in May last year, will shine a light on Marske.

She said: “It’s bittersweet but it’s great for the area. Saltburn often gets most of the attention and Marske doesn’t always get the spotlight, so it will be nice to see that.”

Clare said she hopes to relocate the business in the future, potentially moving to Saltburn due to higher footfall.

She said: “Especially in the summer, Saltburn has better footfall. Hopefully the television exposure will help us secure a new premises.

“I am absolutely heartbroken to close. Marske has such a strong community and I’m really sorry to have to leave.”
