“We are so lucky it wasn’t worse. Thank God for the fire brigade for arriving so quickly and making sure it was safe to return”
Footballer James McClean and his family had a lucky escape after a fire broke out at their new Derry home. The midfielder, who re-signed for Derry City last month, is preparing to relocate home with his wife and their young family.
The 36-year-old began his professional journey with the Candystripes before departing for Sunderland more than 15 years ago. He has since enjoyed a remarkable career, accumulating over 100 international caps for the Republic of Ireland and featuring in excess of 700 matches across England’s football pyramid.
But a fire started at their new home, and on Friday, January 30, his wife Erin McClean, told how they were lucky the incident “wasn’t worse”.

It’s understood that the boiler in their new home caught fire, but it was luckily contained by the emergency services.
Posting on social media, Erin said: “What a day! Our boiler in our new house caught fire, and we are so lucky it wasn’t worse. Thank God for the fire brigade for arriving so quickly and making sure it was safe to return. Very thankful. When it rains, it pours”.
Mum-of-four has said the “hardest part of leaving England” was her children saying goodbye to their football teammates and friends.
Sharing their moving experience with her followers, Mrs McClean said Sunday was an “emotional day” for the family.
She shared an image of their son, Junior, holding a signed football shirt from his team, Crewe Academy in Cheshire, describing the jersey as a “lovely touch” as he moves back to Northern Ireland.
“A real emotional one today,” she wrote. “This has to be the hardest part of leaving England. Junior is heartbroken and he will miss everyone so much.”
McClean made his return to Irish football on Saturday night when the midfielder featured for Derry City in their Presidents Cup triumph against Shamrock Rovers on Saturday evening, providing the assist for Darragh Markey’s decisive strike as Derry secured a 1-0 victory.
Following his role in Markey’s winner, McClean chose to celebrate right in front of the Shamrock Rovers supporters, and whilst he had endured some verbal abuse throughout the match, he ensured he gave as good as he got to the Hoops faithful positioned behind the goal.
Following the final whistle, the Ireland international took to social media to criticise the Shamrock Rovers supporters, claiming they had labelled him an “orange b*****d” during his comeback to the League of Ireland.
“Getting called an “orange b*****d” from your fellow countrymen… stay class,” McClean wrote on Instagram stories, reports the Irish Mirror.
