When you start planning your ultimate home theater an important aspect to consider is where you will set up all your home theater equipment. If you have separate components and multiple gaming consoles, you’ll find that you might need a considerable amount of space. One of the best ways to house your gear is in a commercial-like equipment rack. These types of racks have been used for decades in data centers, studios, concert halls, and high-performance home theaters. We like them because they are very easy to service and make changing things out as you upgrade super simple. This video will go over how to plan out your ultimate rack setup and give you some tips that will help make you really proud of the outcome.

Been playing around with various Open Source NAS software. Wasn't 100% happy. So last weekend built a headless Ubuntu Server instead. Storing video and photos brilliantly, and accessible from my Apple TV box, downstairs.

Except that a nas IS a type of server.
Server doesn't mean "powerful machine" it means it servers clients.
Any nas is technically a server, no matter how powerful it is.

I have a real Dell PowerEdge server and it's biggest claim to fame is the high idle power consumption.
The haters have bought into the value of what their eyes and their marketed to brain believes is a server. if it's not a 19 EIAJ rack mount device it's not a server. If it doesn't have Xenon it's not a server. If it doesn't have ECC it's not a server.
It's their power bill. They can just keep paying it and feel all big and tough about themselves.

This is awesome! Just what I'm looking for, I kept running into videos on creating these very expensive high end servers and I don't want to spend a ton of money and I don't have the knowledge to do all that. But your channel has helped me, I'm just an average 36yo dad that is into tech, not a technology expert with a ton of money and free time to do what most videos offer. 😂

ITlets.
A server serves services, AD, RADIUS, Storage(NAS, SAN). It could be whatever you want. It's like the difference like a NAS and SAN, both are storage in network in very basic statement.

I run a i3 3210, 6gb ddr3 with 240gb ssd and multiple hdd for my home server. I run jellyfin and immichh. Ofcourse jellyfin won't to multiple transcodes and I've disabled ML options on immichh, but that's my need, I don't have to build an expensive build which I've no means to utilize. Find your use case and build accordingly.

I'm running a rockpro64 as my NAS and I don't need anything beefier. Serves files via NFS and block devices via iSCSI. It has 2 HDDs and 2 SSDs, each in a mirror zpool. Backup server is an odroid hc4. I was planning to run containers on the odroid n2+ (which has a crazy power draw of about 1W and barely gets to 5W under higher average loads), but I couldn't make some things work.

A NAS is a server…. A server is a network device which serves content or services. What would a NAS be other than a server?
@markojovanovic9651

Its because undereducated people don't know what a server is.

All NAS' are servers, but not all servers are NAS'.
@Wijdbdhxhd
September 26, 2024 at 4:04 am
Most people here talking about NAS have never seen a real NAS. The term has been misused so much that what today’s called a nas is really a server. The difference between a NAS and a server is that a NAS doesn’t provide any services like which is the case with iSCSI just storage attached to a network, a server provides services like serving web pages (even if just for the UI), media, storage outside the local network, backups, cctv backups, image processing, transcoding, gaming, and so on that is a server it’s in the name “server”provides services. Network attached storage is not that it’s like having a wire that attaches the storage to a computer via a network (just a longer wire), (it’s also in the name read the name look it up in the dictionary), in a real NAS the storage shows as a local drive but it’s attached through the network like iSCSI what they call NAS today doesn’t even do that, so if it does other or more than that it’s a server.

A server offers a SERVICE to other devices, whether it be a connection to printers, storage, some type of compute workload, webpages, whatever – it primarily 'gives'. a client essentially only 'takes'…yes a Win11 PC CAN also share files or a printer but it would only be a server if that's its PRIMARY role…so yea, a NAS is a server. Period. Its primary role is to give. I mean no one would argue that a database server isn't a server, it IS, and YET it is basically just a NAS for a vey specific type of data. There's no argument to be made – only a question – "In it's primary role does the device 'give' or 'take'?"

@lewisgreaves7341
September 26, 2024 at 4:04 am
To also support what you are saying, Servethehome (along with others) have been running test, reviews, benchmarks etc for years using USFF systems to show off just how good/low power/quiet your home setups can be. I think you are right, that the line between NAS and Server has become so blurred overtime to be almost redundant now. For many years we had dedicated file or file and print servers. By many peoples reckoning that's just a NAS…. People need to get off their high horses and learn that the world moves on, especially in IT and many concepts and systems get replaced, or change so much as to be almost unrecognisable from their original form.

To me, a server is merely a computer that on start, loads programs under a service account and performs actions or exposes services on a network. A NAS is a server capability that has specific IO hardware requirements in addition to server software.
@mavirek

I appreciated your run-through, and I wish I had your brains. I often dip back into search for an appliance to give my family shared storage that is accessible away from home, serves music and movies onto the TV (via Apple TV), and takes the place of iCloud for all the Apple HomeKit security cameras I have set up. Currently I have to subscribe to iCloud for the Apple HomeKit cameras, and to Google Drive to share folders with family and students–I even set up mini websites using published Google Docs and hyperlinks. It's all workarounds that seem complicated but are easier than learning how to use Synology, Ugreen, or iMacMini to do all those things instead. At least to me.

After some deliberation, I've decided to cut out the part of the video criticizing LTT, der8auer and Level1Tech for "ruining the concept of a home server".
Linus, Roman and Wendell are all creators that I respect and look up to. In hindsight, criticizing them for the 'sins' of their respective audiences was not fair.
As creators, we're not always responsible for our audiences, and definitely shouldn't be held accountable for the few "bad apples" among our viewers who walk away with a wrong idea after watching our content.
The 'criticism' on my end came from a place of frustration. A lot of negative comments under my videos are basically a person hearing something from a big tech channel, and then parroting it as an absolute truth that applies in all situations (e.g. "HDDs are dead, you should only be using SSDs). That being said, this is not something Linus, Wendell or Roman have any control over and definitely not something they should be criticized for. All three creators make absolutely clear that their 'overkill' builds are just that – overkill, and aren't meant as realistic build suggestions.
So if any of the aforementioned creators watch this video (I doubt it) and wonder what's up with all the LTT bashing in the comments – now you know, and sorry about that 🙃
