Mark Ruffalo Opens Up About the Possibility of a Solo Hulk Movie
It’s been more than a decade since The Incredible Hulk (2008), and fans have been wondering if Mark Ruffalo’s version of the Green Goliath will ever get his own solo film. Unfortunately, the actor isn’t sure it’ll ever happen — and the reason, once again, comes down to rights.
“It’s not really owned by Marvel,” Ruffalo told GQ. “Hulk is a Universal property. I don’t know if it’ll ever really come to be, honestly. We keep talking about it, what it would be.”
The complicated character rights between Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures have long prevented a standalone Hulkfilm under the MCU banner. While Ruffalo’s Hulk has been a major part of ensemble stories like The Avengers and Thor: Ragnarok, his own adventure has remained off the table due to distribution restrictions.
Still, Ruffalo hasn’t lost hope.
“There’s been so many Hulk movies already,” he said. “It’s like, does anyone really even want another one? But I want one. I think audiences would be into it if we could crack it.”
Universal currently retains distribution rights for any solo Hulk film — the same situation that previously affected Namorin Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Disney’s acquisition of Fox resolved similar issues for X-Men and Fantastic Four, but the Hulk’s future remains in legal limbo.
For now, Ruffalo continues to appear in supporting roles across the MCU, most recently in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Whether we’ll ever see “World War Hulk” or “Planet Hulk” on the big screen remains uncertain — but the actor’s enthusiasm suggests the door isn’t fully closed.
