Everton takeover: Friedkin Group will bring ‘stability’ and ‘clear up noise’
The US-based Friedkin Group is led by chairman Dan Friedkin, who also owns Roma, and has a net worth of £5.7bn according to Forbes.
The final decision rests with the Premier League and will depend on whether the group can satisfy the Owners’ and Directors’ Test, but should the deal be completed, Everton would become the 10th club in the English top flight under majority American ownership.
A sale would end the long-running saga of Moshiri’s attempts to sell the club, with 777 Partners missing a deadline to complete earlier this year after agreeing a deal last September.
Dyche is into the final year of his contract at Goodison Park and said he has not spoken to the Friedkin Group yet, but “you would imagine” the two parties will get together for discussions “at some point”.
Asked about his future, the ex-Burnley boss replied: “It is not really relevant. I was brought here as a custodian and to do a specific job and I continue to work hard at that.
“We have to change the results, but the workload here has been considerable.
“I don’t know what their strategy is, what their belief is and the culture they want to make at Everton Football Club. They might be looking at the history or the future, I will have to wait and see.”
The verdict has been announced in Manchester City’s legal case against the Premier League over the league’s rules on commercial deals involving clubs’ owners.
City, who are owned by the Abu Dhabi-backed City Football Group, had some complaints upheld, with two aspects of the associated party transaction (APT) rules deemed unlawful by a tribunal.
But the Premier League says the tribunal rejected the majority of Manchester City’s challenges and “endorsed the overall objectives, framework and decision-making of the APT system”.
APTs are aimed at the value of sponsorship deals with companies linked to clubs’ owners.
This case is not directly related to the Premier League disciplinary commission which will hear 115 charges against City for allegedly breaching its financial regulations, some of which date back to 2009.
The tribunal – in a 175-page document – ruled that shareholder loans should not be excluded from the scope of APT rules and that some amendments made in February by the Premier League should not be retained.
In this arbitration process, Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton all acted as witnesses for City.
Witnesses for the Premier League included Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Brighton and West Ham.
Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham and Wolves wrote letters in support of the rules.
The issue with yellow cards pre-dates Maresca’s appointment in June.
Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke last season about how “silly” bookings were a problem and showed video clips to his players to try to rectify the issue.
The Blues were punished last season for not adapting to new Premier League rules for dissent.
Jackson picked up 10 bookings last season but only one was for a foul, the others were for dissent, not retreating quickly enough for a free-kick and entering the field of play when a substitute.
Other players fell foul in similar situations and captain Reece James received two red cards – including one for two yellows – despite playing just 421 minutes.
The immaturity of Chelsea’s young squad may be another factor and with centre-back Thiago Silva having departed in the summer the average age of the group has dropped further to 23.4, according to data from Transfermarkt.
The Blues also have the lowest average height in the league, according to Transfermarkt, averaging just over 5ft 8in, which was another issue Pochettino complained about when in charge.
It perhaps leads to a tendency for players to look at other ways to try and impart their physicality on matches.
And under both Pochettino and Maresca Chelsea are firmly a possession-based team, trying to implement various pressing styles. That pressing can lead to bookings in transition phases and there is a tendency for teams operating these tactics to produce tactical fouls to stop counter-attacks.
Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body which governs referees in England, has also changed the rules in recent years, with an automatic yellow card now expected to be brandished in several situations.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran has signed a new deal at Villa Park to keep him at the club until 2030.
The 20-year-old moved to Villa Park in January 2023 in a £18m deal from Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire, signing a five-and-a-half year deal until 2028.
The Colombian came close to leaving Villa in the summer after interest from Chelsea and West Ham.
But he remained in the Midlands and has scored six times so far this season, including in a 1-0 win against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last week.
Duran has scored winning goals against West Ham, Leicester and Everton in the Premier League so far this season.
The Colombia international was Emery’s second signing at Villa Park following his appointment in October 2022.
He has scored 14 goals in 56 appearances for the club, as well as one goal in 12 caps for Colombia.
A criticism of Cliftonville last season when they attempted to retain their title was that they didn’t have the squad capable of challenging on four fronts in comparison to Glentoran’s.
Their frontline players invariably lined out just about in every game they could which appeared to take its toll as they finished second and lost the Irish Cup final against the Glens.
How the tables turned this campaign however, as the Reds have won the league in style, retained the League Cup and are in the Women’s Challenge Cup final later this month against Lisburn Rangers.
They brought in experienced Women’s Premiership players in Erin McAllister and Carla Devine from Linfield as well as Sion Swifts trio Aoibhe O’Neill, Naomi McLaughlin and Tasmin McCartan.
McAllister quickly established herself as Cliftonville’s number one goalkeeper and pulled off a number of good saves throughout the season, whilst Devine has been the perfect impact player off the bench.
She has netted 10 league goals and has provided a more direct option to replace or play alongside Caitlin McGuinness.
O’Neill, McLaughlin and McCartan’s minutes have been limited but they have stepped in and performed well when called upon when Reds manager John McGrady opted to rotate.
None more so than McLaughlin, who despite having an injury-plagued season, scored twice as Cliftonville beat Linfield 5-2 last month.
