7th Heaven cast condemn Stephen Collins’ ‘inexcusable’ sexual abuse ahead of series rewatch

7th Heaven stars Beverley Mitchell, David Gallagher and Mackenzie Rosman have spoken out about the “inexcusable” behavior of their former co-star Stephen Collins.

The actors, who portrayed three of Collins’s seven TV children on the hit family drama, addressed his past sexual abuse scandal on the latest episode of their 7th Heaven rewatch podcast, Catching Up With The Camdens.

“We want you to know that we see all of your comments and we know how excited you all are for the rewatch, but before we get into that we do think it’s important that we say something about Stephen Collins,” began Mitchell, 43, who played the headstrong Lucy Camden.

The trio first launched the rewatch podcast back in July; however, the September 23 episode marks the first where they revisited the show’s pilot to share behind-the-scenes memories.

Gallagher, 39, who starred as conscientious Simon Camden, continued: “All forms of abuse, sexual abuse of any kind, it’s inexcusable. And victims of abuse need to be shown compassion and they should be given support.”

“As we rewatch these episodes, it would be impossible not to talk about Stephen because he was such a big part of the show and our lives,” added Rosman, 34, who played spunky Ruthie Camden. She went on to clarify that none of them had “any inappropriate experiences with Stephen.”

Mitchell assured listeners that Collins will not be joining the podcast. “We do not excuse or condone his behavior. Our hope for this podcast is to reconnect with you, our fans, to relive some Ninetiess nostalgia and to share our fondest memories of 7th Heaven,” she said.

“We know this is difficult and we understand that it can be triggering,” Gallagher said. “But we want to say that we love you guys and we are so grateful for all the love and support that you, our community, have shown to us. So, hopefully you guys will stick with us as we continue on this journey.”

In 2014, Collins, who starred as Reverend Eric Camden in the 11-season drama that aired on The WB (now the CW) from 1996 to 2007, admitted to inappropriate sexual misconduct with three underage girls between 1973 and 1994.

“Forty years ago, I did something terribly wrong that I deeply regret. I have been working to atone for it ever since,” he shared in a statement at the time. “I’ve decided to address these issues publicly because two months ago, various news organizations published a recording made by my then-wife, Faye Grant, during a confidential marriage therapy session in January, 2012. This session was recorded without the therapist’s or my knowledge or consent.”

He was subsequently dropped by his talent agency, and 7th Heaven reruns were pulled from two networks. Collins did not end up being prosecuted for his alleged crimes.

During an interview with Katie Couric at the time, he blamed his actions on “poor impulse control” but maintained: “I am not attracted to underage girls.”

Collins hasn’t acted since 2014, with his final credit being the voice of Howard Stark in a single episode of the animated series Avengers Assemble.

The series returned last week with 16 new people desperate to find love.

The E4 experts have matched them by their personalities, likes and dislikes.

But between eight couples there are only two that have yet to clash – Kristina and Kieran, and Ross and Sacha.

Polly and Adam have argued numerous times, after he confessed he wasn’t attracted to her and asked the experts for a petite brunette.

During the first dinner party of the season viewers spotted him eyeing up Lacey who fits the bill.

And as Adam chatted to Nathan about their honeymoons, he suddenly started quizzing him on his bride Lacey.

He said: “Was she in a bikini then?’ Little thong bikini?”

Moments later Lacey went to sit with the boys including Ross.

Commenting as they watched the scenes, one viewer noticed: “When Lacey went to sit on the same sofa, Ross was making room between him and Nathan, but she chose to go and sit between Adam and Nathan.”

Another said: “Adam’s comments about Lacey, To her HUSBAND NO LESS.”

One more agreed with the comments and said: “Glad I’m not the only one who picked up on that!”

Polly couldn’t hold back the tears later on when they discussed their relationship at the commitment ceremony.

And Adam got a grilling from show experts Mel Schilling and Paul C Brunson.

Adam said: “It’s a tricky one. She obviously really fancies me and I want to say it back to her but I can’t. She’s not my usual type but I’m hers.

“Don’t get me wrong, she’s a good looking girl and we get on like a house on fire, but I just feel bad for her.”

The remark prompted smirks and raised eyebrows from the other couples around the room, and even Polly made a face.

Paul said: “It seems as if what you are actually doing is pushing yourself away from her.”

He added that Adam could “understand he’s in an unnatural experiment” and go “all in”.

Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda wins Emmy Award despite backlash from industry pros

Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda has won an Emmy Award for her AJ+ documentary, It’s Bisan from Gaza and I’m Still Alive.

The 25-year-old activist and filmmaker was nominated in the category of Outstanding Hard News Feature Story for the film, created with AJ+, an imprint of Al Jazeera, which was also nominated. The Peabody award-winning feature chronicles the journey of Owda as her family flee the bombardment of their home in Beit Hanoun in the Gaza strip.

John Laurence, senior executive producer at AJ+, accepted the award on Owda’s behalf as she remains trapped in the Gaza strip.

“We’d like to thank the academy for this recognition, this award is testimony to the power of one woman, armed only with an iPhone who survived almost a year of bombardment,” he began.

“Over 100 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza including several of our Al Jazeera colleagues. Our bureau in the occupied West Bank was shut down at gunpoint just last week.

“We thank you, our journalistic community for this recognition for Bisan and for the AJ+ team and we urge you to join us in saying journalism is not a crime.”

Owda gained millions of followers on social media since 7 October as she documented the destruction of “70 per cent of our infrastructure” in Gaza following Israeli military action.

However, the nomination sparked controversy when over 150 people, including Will & Grace star Debra Messing, Cruel Intentions actor Selma Blair, former Paramount CEO Sherry Lansing, head of WME Rick Rosen, billionaire Haim Saban, and entertainment manager Michael Rotenberg signed a letter asking for the journalist’s nomination to be revoked.

Organised by the Creative Community for Peace, a Jewish non-profit organisation which describes its mission as “to educate about rising antisemitism within the entertainment industry, and to galvanise support against the cultural boycott of Israel”, the group alleged that Owda has ties with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a group which is a proscribed terrorist organisation in the US, Japan, and European Union.

However, NATAS CEO President Adam Sharp responded to the letter saying it had been “unable to corroborate these reports, nor has it been able, to date, to surface any evidence of more contemporary or active involvement by Owda with the PFLP organisation”.

In a letter addressed to Ari Ingel, the executive director of Creative Community for Peace, Sharp noted that Emmy-nominated documentaries in the past “have been controversial, giving a platform to voices that certain viewers may find objectionable or even abhorrent. But all have been in the service of the journalistic mission to capture every facet of the story.”

Israel’s campaign is currently being reviewed for a “plausible” risk of genocide by the International Court of Justice, and more than 40,000 people, including almost 17,000 children, have been killed. Israel vehemently denies any wrongdoing and insists its goal is to eradicate Hamas after 1,139 people including 815 civilians were killed on 7 October.
