Wendell step on your stripes with the manufacturers for more pci-e lanes and more pci-e slots on the motherboards so we can build an awesome nas with a lots of containers and high bandwidth.

Looking for an upgrade from an xeon 6 core v4 to a new system. Need 3 pci-e slots for hba cards, 8 onboard sata and preferably 2x 10g.
Currently have an 9300-24i for the hotswap hdd 4u case from inter-tech. Need one hba in the near future for expanding with jbod enclosure as the bays are nearly all full and one slot for nvme add-in card. Use the system for media, business (nextcloud, webhosting and backup) and personal (file storage and backup) use case. It's becoming the all-in system rocking unraid. Would like your advice for a build that as it all with prefably a consumer cpu. Currently have a ipmi interface and it's a gamechanger when trouble occur so either ipmi or your kvm-pi solution is also needed. And it needs to be energy efficient cause running it is getting expensive.

It's impossible with a consumer grade cpu of the current or latest gen. If you succeed in assembling a system like this i wil certainly take my hat off and probably give it to you cause you earned my respect then.

Need at least 2 x16 PCIE – one for the networking (probably and old PCIE gen3 server card), and one for the SSD carrier card – preferably pcie gen4 to provide redundant SSDs.

I am more interested in the Jonsbo N3. I have been thinking about getting one to turn into a combination NAS and workstation using my ASUS ROG Strix B550i Wifi, and AMD Ryzen 7 5700G.

Im rocking a 304, and was looking at the Silverstone DS380, but noticed someone on here modded his 304, to hold 8 drives stacked in 2x 4 drive stacks side by side, with a sfx psu, now i dont know what the hell is going on!!

  5. @acuteaura

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

populating that icydock part with drives would be about as expensive as the part itself if you used Crucial P3 2TB drives.

  6. @be-kind00

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

I suggest focusing on mATX boards for higher end nas systems

Looking to set up an "office quiet" energy efficient Ceph cluster. I have 3 empty SuperMicro rack cases with a SAS 12gb backplane. Looking to put a motherboard in which has just enough processing power to handle the storage. (Will use NUCs for proxmox containers). Looking for a solution which has the SAS connectivity, two Ethernet connections (with at least one 10g). Have you ever speced something like this?

  8. @AntonyWilliams

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

    what I'd like to see.
A homemade server with 8 3.5" drives, and a modern intel CPU (with quick sync). 2.5Gb network. In a case like the Silverstone CS381.
I'm planning to build something like this in the next month

  9. @markhaus

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

For me the ideal server is one that takes up as little space as possible while still being powerful. A cluster of n100 mini pcs actually has fit that bill quite nicely

Asrock raid, 5-22gb 3.5 drives raid5 ,that EVGA power supply. Blu-ray recordable slim (required)
And Jonesboro and one is close. But it doesn't have a std sata DVD slot slot.

What I find is there's a decided lack of any cases that have DVD slots anymore besides mid and huge tower formats. Internally go to a little teeny 3x3in NUC style to mid Tower and up.

A lot of them can you see desktop tiny systems also have a decided lack of a simple Slimline DVD slot. I mean the reason we have cases is to reduce power and wiring clutter. You think that a small and you see you would have a DVD drive built in for at least a little bit of large scale storage

  13. @nicholaushilliard6811

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

Why dont you build a Fractal Node 804 and add 2.5 to 3.5 modules which allow for two Sata or NVME 2.5 drives for a total of 16 hard drives. Some cheaper 4TB Sata 2.5 drives went for 126 a piece on Amazon black Friday or cyber Monday.

Set up a SAN. ZFS! 🙂

  15. @wertigon

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

This video kinda aged poorly unfortunately, given that 4TB SSDs are now affordable and 8TB are carved out from the bottom now and will need to drop in price very soon. It would not surprise me if we start seeing sub-$400 32TB m.2 SSDs in 2027, though that might perhaps be a tad optimistic.

I 100% completely agree about the layout though – half-height card support, support ATX boards in one chamber, 6x or 8x 5.25" on the other side and maybe, just maybe put in space for a 240 or 280 radiator in the bottom or on the side.

  16. @DannyWelch

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

I'm still rocking a 10+ year old Thermaltake case with 9x 5.25" front facing drive bays. Mounted 9x 3.5" drives in the bottom 6, DVD drive up top, and room for 3 more 3.5" drives for the future. Don't think I'll ever get rid of that case.

  17. @RahulSharma-bh1ux

  20. @Veptis

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

I want to have a home server/workstation that can run 34B (or Mixtral7x8 maybe) language models at bf/fp16. Is there anything other than dual RTX 6000 Ada which cost 12k each?
As for cases, I really like how the Silverstone RM52 looks.

Jonsbo just announced the N4 and it supports mATX w/ 7x 3.5" bays

  29. @feralshad0w

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

I am late to the game, but is there is a cheaper option for just having NAS for long term storage? I have 2x 4TB drives that I want to get out of my main PC so I can have the files accessible on a power efficient form factor than just running my main rig 24/7. I have them manually mirrored (copy paste) because my windows mirror array failed, so I manually do periodic transfers from one to the other. Other use case is photos, movies, and etc, but the first priority is redundancy of data (and as a backup from my devices).

    September 27, 2024 at 1:57 am

I have the CoolerMaster Centurion 590, also 9x 5.25" drive bays, and about the same space inside as the Antec.

Loving the content, but the older videos recirculate, so I was about to suggest a config build, but I noticed this video is over a year old. If still interested, let me know, I will send the build specs to you! July '24

Avoid SeeedStudio, they have not had any of their high performing units instock in over a year. Does not give me the warm fuzzies. When a company does not restock their products that are selling. Even the website is misleading.
