Olivia Vukosa named Gatorade Player of the Year: How Diana Taurasi welcomed the UConn recruit to the club

Published

on

Olivia Vukosa has been named the 2026 Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year, becoming the first UConn commit to win it since Paige Bueckers in 2021. The award, which honors “the nation’s best high school athletes for their excellence in sport, academics and community,” has been won by three Hall of Famers, 17 WNBA first-round draft picks, national champions and more. What made it even more special was the award being delivered by Diana Taurasi, who won three national championships with the Huskies before taking over the WNBA as the all-time leading scorer.

“I didn’t even see the trophy,” Vukosa told CBS Sports. “I didn’t see anyone. I saw her through the door and I started crying. It’s definitely a surreal experience and something I’m definitely going to cherish forever… She’s someone I’ve looked up to for a long, long time and it just doesn’t feel real. It feels like a dream.”

The 6-foot-4 New York native is the No. 4 player in the 247Sports class of 2026 rankings. She averaged 19.4 points, 17.9 rebounds, 5.5 blocks and 3.8 assists per game during her junior year at Christ the King, the Queens high school that boasts alumni including Sue Bird and Tina Charles. Vukosa is not a traditional big and the versatility she brings to the table is part of what makes Taurasi excited about her potential.

“I think when you talk about the way Olivia plays basketball, it’s the new generation. It’s the positionless, it’s having all the skills on the court,” Taurasi told CBS Sports. “I don’t think it’s good enough just to be good at one thing anymore, and I think Olivia shows that when she’s on the court.

“Her IQ, her footwork, her great hands. I think when you play with great players, can they make things that are really hard look easy? She does that, and that’s a testament to her work ethic, on and off the court the way she works. I think when she’s on the court, it’s hard to know what she’s going to do next because she’s just as great a passer as she is a scorer… I think those are the type of players that I love to watch and that have the future ahead of them that’s gonna be amazing.”

Up next? Vukosa will play under Geno Auriemma, who has turned UConn into the most successful program in basketball history with 12 NCAA Tournament trophies. Taurasi, who played for him from 2000-04, still credits his brutal honesty in telling her the things she didn’t necessarily want to hear but needed to in order to reach her full potential.

That level of honesty is something Vukosa also valued when making her decision to join the Huskies. However, it was not just Auriemma keeping it real that earned her commitment: she got a strong recommendation from UConn associate head coach Chris Dailey too.

Despite her credentials, Vukosa admitted she was surprised when she realized UConn was interested in her. The first time she saw Auriemma attending one of her games, she incorrectly assumed he was there for somebody else.

“I think it was the first session of the EYBL season,” she said. “I saw him on our court and my first thought was that he wasn’t there for me at all and that he was there for someone else, and if I played good I got lucky.”

Vukoa didn’t just capture Auriemma’s attention; she also got a very enthusiastic offer.

“That car ride home, him talking to me and saying that you have an offer and you should take it right now, that’s definitely my first impression of him,” she recounted. “But like (Taurasi) said, he is a great guy. A great person on and off the court and he also reminded me the most of the coaches I have at Christ the King.”

Choosing UConn means Vukoa will be on the same roster as Sarah Strong, last year’s national Freshman of the Year and a top POY candidate this season. They could be a very powerful duo, even the idea of which had Taurasi leaning back in her chair. As for Vukoa, she is already visualizing what it will be like to share the court with Strong.

“Everything,” Vukoa answered without hesitation when asked what she liked about Strong’s game. “She’s just an all-around player and I can’t wait to feed her the ball and I hope she is excited to feed me the ball in the post.”

No team has won back-to-back championships since UConn’s four-peat from 2013 to 2016. The Huskies, the No. 1 overall seed in this year’s tournament, are trying to do just that after they beat the South Carolina Gamecocks last year. That journey will begin Saturday afternoon against UTSA.

Jadon Sancho’s stance on next move with Man United ace ‘ready to accept’

Published

on

Jadon Sancho isn’t set to be short of options when his contract at Manchester United expires in the summer, although the club do have the option to extend by a further year

Manchester United wantaway star Jadon Sancho is reportedly open to a return to Borussia Dortmund this summer and is ready to accept settling for a reduction in wages to do so.

The Athletic have reported that the winger, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa, would be willing to return to Dortmund for a third time.

He has featured 158 times for the Bundesliga side across two periods, the most recent being at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Sancho hasn’t featured for United since August 2023 and has spent the last two seasons at Chelsea and Aston Villa, who he helped reach the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night.

His contract expires at the end of the season and despite the club holding the option to extend it by a further year, it is likely that his five year spell at Old Trafford will come to an end.

Dortmund were linked with Sancho briefly last summer before he moved to Villa. Niko Kovac’s men moved to a 3-4-2-1 system this season, using two attacking midfielders behind a striker.

But the report from The Athletic claims that they are planning to return to a winger-based formation.

As well as interest from Germany, Sancho is also said to be attracting interest from Italy and Turkey.

It’s currently unclear whether Villa will look to sign the United winger on a permanent basis in the summer on a free transfer.

It’s reported that the budget available to Unai Emery will depend on their Premier League finish and which European competition they qualify for. Last month, the Villa boss was asked about the possibility of extending Sancho’s move in Birmingham.

“He will need another contract, and maybe it could be here,” Emery said. “If he plays his best football, we will want him. But other teams could also be interested in him.

“This is football, and each match is important for every player’s and the club’s future, and for how we can achieve our objectives.”

Brazilian starlet Joao Fonseca sets up Carlos Alcaraz clash at Miami Open

Published

on

19-year-old tennis sensation Joao Fonseca set up a highly anticipated second-round clash with Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Open, the first time the pair will meet.

Fonseca took just shy of two hours to overcome Fabian Marozsan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in front of a highly partisan Brazilian crowd at Miami Gardens.

The teenager played Alcaraz’s only real rival, Jannik Sinner, in Indian Wells last month, and now faces the other pre-eminent player on the men’s tour.

Fonseca pushed Sinner in two tight tie-breaks in their fourth-round encounter, the first time the two played each other, with Sinner inching ahead in the key moments and ultimately going on to win the title, his first of 2026.

“Excited for sure,” Fonseca said when asked about his next match. “I don’t know about other players, but I look forward to playing against the top players. I played against Jannik last tournament, and now I’m playing against Carlos.

“It’s just a super experience, so I’m looking forward to it for sure and it’s going to be a great match. Hopefully I can get the win.”

Miami was where an 18-year-old Alcaraz won his first Masters 1000 tournament in 2022, becoming the youngest champion in the tournament’s history.

Now an eight-time Masters champion the Spaniard is the top seed in Miami, where he suffered a shock opening-round exit to David Goffin last year.

Elsewhere another highly regarded young talent, French 17-year-old Moise Kouame, earned his first-ever ATP Tour win.

The teenager, who has impressed on the lower-level ATP Challenger and ITF tours, beat home hopeful Zachary Svajda 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. The result meant he became the youngest-ever matchwinner in Miami, and the youngest winner of an ATP Masters 1000 match since Rafael Nadal in 2003.

He earned a congratulatory message from his idol Novak Djokovic and told Tennis Channel: “I have a small secret… After the win, Novak texted me. I’m so nervous, I don’t know what to answer. He texted me something like, ‘Big match today. Congrats. Hopefully you will go far.’

“Maybe [I should reply]: ‘Thank you, Novak. Thank you, my idol.’ No… I don’t know! Imagine having your idol DM [direct message] you like this… It’s the coolest thing ever.”

Djokovic won his first Masters 1000 match in Paris in 2005, three years before Kouame was even born.

The Frenchman faces a sterner test in the next round as he faces a player ranked 363 places above him: 21st seed Jiri Lehecka.
