St Johnstone: Aberdeen give Peter Leven permission to talk to club over vacant manager’s job
The 41-year-old Leven has had two spells as Aberdeen caretaker since joining the Pittodrie coaching staff in June last year.
The former Kilmarnock, MK Dons and Oxford midfielder was also assistant manager at Kilmarnock, Dynamo Brest and Russian side Orenburg before his move to Pittodrie.
“It’s always a blow when you lose staff,” added Thelin. “We’d miss him, of course, but we have to find solutions for the future.
“When good people do good things, they get eyes on them. We want him to stay here, but it’s also good that he gets recognition from other clubs as well.”
Aberdeen midfielder Leighton Clarkson added “we’d all be gutted to lose him”, given “what he’s done with a lot of the players when he was interim manager and what he’s doing now”.
“He’s a big character and a big coach,” he said. “His knowledge of the game is really good, the way he wants to play football and the way he communicates with all the lads is good and he’s the one who does all the extra sessions and he’s been a big part of my journey.”
Meanwhile, Lynch is due to take charge of Larne’s visit to Cliftonville in Northern Ireland’s Premiership on Friday evening.
The Belfast-born 44-year-old, who was previously assistant at Glentoran, has been in charge since 2017 but has caught the eye after back-to-back titles, and progress to the Uefa Conference League to become the first Northern Irish club to reach the main draw of a European competition.
Ayr United’s Scott Brown had been linked with the job at McDiarmid Park, but the former Celtic and Scotland midfielder has since signed a contract extension with the Scottish Championship club.
Former Northern Ireland striker Kirk and assistant Alex Cleland will take charge of St Johnstone for a second time as Premiership leaders Celtic visit on Saturday, having drawn their first game 3-3 at Ross County last weekend.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot fears he will be without goalkeeper Alisson “for a few weeks” following his injury against Crystal Palace.
The Brazil international, 32, went off in the 79th minute after appearing to pull his hamstring when making a clearance.
With Caoimhin Kelleher absent from the squad because of illness, Vitezslav Jaros came on for his Liverpool debut and made one save to keep out a tame effort from Eberechi Eze as the Reds won 1-0.
“With Alisson it is clear he will be out for maybe a few weeks,” Slot told BBC Match of the Day.
Liverpool had been in Champions League action on Wednesday and had a tight turnaround for the trip to Crystal Palace, with the game having kicked off at 12:30 BST on Saturday.
Slot added: “Maybe this is something the FA should look at – if you play Wednesday evening why do we have an early kick-off in an away game?
“Or they have to look at me and rotate all my players, maybe it is also bad luck, I don’t know.
“The positive thing is that Jaros did really well last season when on loan. He was champion and won the cup. He wanted to play desperately. At this club we need three good goalkeepers. He was outstanding today.”
Alisson, who has been at Liverpool since 2018, missed two games last month with a hamstring niggle.

Linfield say they “will investigate further” an incident at the end of Friday’s Irish Premiership derby at Windsor Park when “an individual was removed from the ground” after Glentoran’s Fuad Sule alleged that he was racially abused by a spectator.
In a statement on his X account, external, Sule said that he was aware that emotions ran high in matches between the Belfast rivals but would not accept being racially abused.
“I’m a big ambassador of kicking racism not only out of football but out of life in general. It’s embarrassing that it still happens today, a good game with an electric atmosphere has turned sour,” said the Glens midfielder.
“There’s a lot of good, honest people that I know very well at Linfield with integrity and class but one individual has tarnished the whole Linfield Football Club’s name for me.” he added.
A statement from Linfield read: “Linfield Football Club is aware of an incident which occurred at the end of last night’s match with Glentoran in which an individual was alleged to have racially abused an opposition player.
“An individual was removed from the ground last night and the club will investigate further.
“Linfield Football Club is opposed to all forms of racism and we will treat the matter with the utmost seriousness.”
A statement from the Northern Ireland Football League said: “We will review the Match Observer’s report from last night’s game and take the appropriate action necessary.
“There is no place for racism within the NI Football League.”
The game ended in a 3-1 victory for Glentoran.
