The plans are proposed to bring more than £8.2 billion of private investment, thousands of new jobs, and major long-term benefits for local communities.
Coatbridge and Bellshill MP Frank McNally has welcomed the announcement that North Lanarkshire will become home to Scotland’s first AI Growth Zone.
The plans are proposed to bring more than £8.2 billion of private investment, thousands of new jobs, and major long-term benefits for local communities.
The landmark development will be based in Chapelhall and will create around 800 permanent high-skill jobs, a further 2,600 construction roles, and at least 50 apprenticeships, alongside a £500 million community benefit fund to support local people.
Speaking after joining Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Innovation, Liz Kendall MP at the announcement, Mr McNally said: “This is the biggest investment North Lanarkshire has ever seen and a huge vote of confidence in our communities and people.
“It will bring well-paid, high-skill jobs, apprenticeships for young people, and long-term regeneration, helping ensure local families benefit directly from the growth of the UK’s digital economy.”
The new AI Growth Zone will be powered by on-site renewable energy, with surplus heat reused to support the nearby University Hospital Monklands, helping it become the UK’s first fully net-zero hospital when it opens in 2031.
The development forms part of the UK Government’s wider AI Opportunities Action Plan and will establish Lanarkshire as a global hub for data, research and clean technology.

Mr McNally added: “North Lanarkshire helped power the industrial revolution. This investment means we can now help lead the digital revolution too, delivering jobs, skills, and opportunity for local people, while putting our area at the heart of Scotland’s economic future.”
Alongside a £543 million community fund, the plans could mean potentially billions of pounds of investment in terms of value and benefits for local people, communities and the future of North Lanarkshire.
North Lanarkshire already has an enviable transport network and the council’s biggest-ever roads and infrastructure investment in history is well underway with the creation of the Pan-Lanarkshire Orbital Transport Corridor, a multi-million pound project linking the M74 in the south with M80 in the north.

Around 58 per cent of the employment land supply across the Glasgow City Region sits in North Lanarkshire and with a network of 340km of full-fibre digital infrastructure already laid, the digital connectivity is in place.
Working with schools, colleges and universities, pathways are already being created for a digitally-skilled workforce pipeline on its doorstep.
