Wolves have hired Vitor Pereira to replace Gary O’Neil on an 18-month contract.

The Portuguese coach has arrived from Saudi club Al-Shabab after Wolves paid out his contract worth £800,000.

Pereira quickly became the first choice to replace O’Neil, who was sacked on Sunday following a last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Wolves are second from bottom in the Premier League, having suffered four straight defeats and Pereira will face fellow strugglers Leicester on Sunday in his first game in charge.

With the Foxes 17th in the table, and also having replaced their manager in recent weeks, it makes the clash a pivotal one for both sides.

Pereira arrives with a wealth of experience, having coached in seven different countries and winning domestic titles in Greece, Portugal and China.

Wolves chairman, Jeff Shi, said: “This is a challenging moment for the club and we want to thank Vitor for taking on this responsibility.

“We have full confidence in his ability to guide us back on track, alongside the players and staff, and the entire club will be united in supporting him to achieve success.”

With January coming up, Pereira has been promised funds to improve the squad with a centre-back top of the wish list.

O’Neil, however, was never given such assurances and had to battle on with a depleted squad after key players Max Kilman and Pedro Neto were sold in the summer.

It follows on from the season before where they sold Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes.

Several names were linked with the Wolves post including David Moyes and Carlos Coberan.

However, Pereira was always the priority target but the Molineux outfit had to prise him away from his Al-Shabab contract.

The former Porto boss had been with the Saudi club since February and leaves them sixth in the Saudi Pro League.

Pereira arrives at a club in turmoil, having won just twice in the Premier League this season.

There have been high-profile disciplinary issues in recent weeks, too, with Mario Lemina being stripped of the captaincy after an outburst following a defeat to West Ham earlier this month.

Jose Sa confronted a fan after losing to Bournemouth and Rayan Ait-Nouri was sent off following the Ipswich defeat and had to be restrained.

Talismanic striker Matheus Cunha might also be facing a ban after swiping a pair of glasses off a member of Ipswich’s coaching staff in the resulting melee.
