Jamie Borthwick: The EastEnders star whose Strictly casting might irk purists
Jamie Borthwick’s appearance on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing might raise a few eyebrows.
After being one of the stars rumoured to have signed up to the BBC dancing competition, the EastEnders actor’s participation was confirmed in August.
However, his inclusion might frustrate purists of the show who believe contestants should not have prior dancing experience; Borthwick, 30, won the Strictly Christmas special alongside Nancy Xu in December 2023.
The couple performed the Quickstep and achieved the maximum 40 points from the judges.
Borthwick will appear on this year’s series alongside contestants including presenter Nick Knowles, singer Toyah Willcox and model and former Love Island star Tasha Ghouri.
The actor is best known for playing Jay Brown in BBC soap EastEnders – a role he has played since 2006, when he was just 14. His role on the series earned him a British Soap Award for “Best Dramatic Performance from a Young Actor or Actress” in 2008. His other TV credits include the Lee Mack sitcom Not Going Out.
Borthwick attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School, whose alumni included Daniel Kaluuya, Dua Lipa and Amy Winehouse.
In 2019, Borthwick joined a number of his fellow EastEnders co-stars in running the London Marathon to raise awareness for dementia in honour of Barbara Windsor. The Peggy Mitchell star died one year later. Earlier this year, he ran the London Marathon in character for a storyline raising awareness of brain tumours.
He has also regularly fielded rumours of a romance with his co-star Danielle Harold, who appeared on last year’s series of I’m a Celebrity.
Harold said of the speculation: “I’m just going to leave that one out there, because it’s so funny. It makes me laugh so much, I’d hate to squash it!”
The actor previously revealed he was asked to be on Strictly in 2018, but said the plan “didn’t work out”.

Speaking of his appointment, Borthwick said: “I had a ball doing the Strictly Christmas special last year, so when I was asked to join for this series it was the easiest yes!
“This is a fresh challenge and it will be so different to be learning a new dance every week and for the public to have their say.
“I’m hoping to be Salsa-ing around Albert Square in no time and I’ll be asking my Walford Strictly alumni for some words of wisdom. See you on the dancefloor!”
A formerStrictly contestant whose previous dance experience led to criticsim was musical theatre star Layton Williams, who was accused of having an unfair advantage of his other fellow contestants.
He said of the backlash in an interview: “I’ve taken it on the chin; I get what everyone’s saying. But if you could be a fly on the wall in this rehearsal room, it’s not easy for me.”

Dani Dyer begs fans for help as daughter is ‘bleeding’ while struggling with contagious illness
DANI Dyer has asked fans for help after one of her twin daughters contracted a nasty infection that has left her scratching and bleeding.
The former Love Island star is a proud mum to one-year-old twin daughters, Star and Summer, and three-year-old son, Santiago, but has been struggling after they’ve all fallen sick.
However, taking to Instagram today, Dani revealed poor baby Star has got the worst of it after contracting a painful illness.
In the video, the kids can be heard screaming in the background as she talks to her followers from her kitchen counter.
She told her fans: “Star’s got hand, foot and mouth, and you can’t do anything about that, can you?
“I’ve looked and looked, but is there any remedies because she is scratching it so much she is bleeding.”
Explaining she was due a phone call with the doctor to try and get help, she added: “I know they genuinely can’t do anything, and now I’m looking at Summer thinking ‘you’re going to get it.’”
“I just feel like the illnesses are constant,” said the exhausted mum. “A few weeks ago Santiago had impetigo, then chicken pox, then Star got a little impetigo.
“Star is usually the sickly one, if anyone is going to get ill out of the twins it is usually Star. I can’t leave the house!”
Hand, foot and mouth, according to the NHS, is common in young children and usually gets better on its own between seven to ten days.
Symptoms include a sore throat, high temperature and mouth ulcers, as well as a rash on hands and feet.
The illness leaves those suffering from it with a low appetite.
It is not, as is sometimes assumed, related to foot and mouth disease which affects animals.
Dani later took to Instagram again to thank followers for their kind messages, sharing that Star had managed to finally get some sleep, with the hope she would feel slightly better once she woke up.
“In my personal opinion, I feel like hand, foot and mouth is worse than chicken pox,” she added. “Star has cried all morning, she’s had a sleep this afternoon, so I’m hoping she wakes up better, but she’s in so much pain, like her mouth…
“It’s just worse than chicken pox.”
What is Hand, Foot and Mouth?
Hand, food and mouth disease is a common infection.
It causes mouth ulcers and spots on the hands and feet.
Though children aged 10 and under are more likely to catch it, it can affect older children and adults as well.
There is no cure for hand, foot and mouth disease so you have to let it run its course.
The best thing to do is to stay at home until you are feeling better.
To help ease the symptoms you can:
- Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration – water and milk are ideal
- Eat soft foods such as mashed potatoes, yogurt and soups if eating and swallowing is uncomfortable. Avoid hot, acidic or spicy foods and drinks.
- Over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can ease a sore throat and fever.
- Gargling with warm, salty water can relieve discomfort from mouth ulcers or you can use mouth gels, rinses or sprays.
Children should be kept away from nursery or school until they are feeling better. Adults should stay away from work.
Medical attention is not usually needed unless your child is unable or unwilling to drink fluids, has signs of dehydration, develops fits, confusion or weakness, or if the symptoms get worse/have not improved after seven to 10 days.
She added that her mum Jo, is also sick so wasn’t able to come and help her, before sarcastically laughing and adding: “I’m really enjoying myself. If I don’t laugh, I’ll cry.”
Dani is engaged to footballer Jarrod Bowen, with the West Ham star getting down on one knee and proposing in July while on holiday in Spain.
The couple have been together since 2021, and together they share twins Star and Summer.
Santiago was born during Dani’s relationship with former partner, Sammy Kimmence.

Downton Abbey creator pays tribute to Dame Maggie Smith | Culture
Downton Abbey creator, Lord Julian Fellowes, has paid tribute to Dame Maggie Smith following her death aged 89.
The pair worked together while Smith starred as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham on the show.
“She was very witty, she was very sharp in her humour…sometimes she was a bit unkind, but you forgave everything!”, he told the BBC of her legacy.
He added: “We really had each other’s rhythm – I knew how to write for her, but by God she knew how to say it.”

Davina McCall drops huge clue about the future of My Mum Your Dad as ITV show ends in romantic finale
DAVINA McCall has dropped a huge clue that ITV reality show My Mum Your Dad will be back for another series.
Viewers tuned in to see whether the kids would give their parents their blessings on Friday night.
Following the final episode, Davina, 56, took to social media to tease fans about the future of the show.
The popular programme, which was commissioned for a second series earlier this year, could be back next year after Davina urged her followers to tag some who deserved a spot at plush retreat.
The presenter told fans: “I wanted to ask you a question…if we got another series, who do you think would need/deserve/enjoy a spot in the retreat.”
Davina added: “You can tag them below.”
READ MORE ON DAVINA MCCALL
Each series sees the My Mum, Your Dad single parents move into a luxury retreat, located in Midhurst, West Sussex.
The swanky mansion is said to be worth over £8 million.
The huge country house is set in 45 acres, meaning there is plenty of space for the singletons to roam around in.
There are also a whopping 11 bedrooms and nine bathrooms.
Last night, viewers watched as Vicky and David met each other’s daughters – but some fans aren’t holding out much hope for the couple.
Despite her concerns, Vicky’s daughter Angharad, 28, gave her approval for her mum to pursue a relationship with David.
David’s daughter Tiana, 21, also gave the nod for their partnership.
But although the couple still appeared to be giving it a go two months after they left the retreat, fans do not believe they will last the distance.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan said: “In the words my old man used to say ‘I’ll give them a week’ regarding Vicky and David.”
Another added: “David making it up as he goes along, like being in an interview you try to wing.”
A third remarked: “I’m just not feeling the love from David.. lovely man but a tad emotionally stunted.. sorry guys!”
My Mum Your Dad returned for a second series earlier this month.
The ITV show, fronted by Davina, sees middle-aged, single parents attempt to find love as their grown-up kids watch on.
On Friday night, the series reached a climax with three remaining couples being whisked on final dates outside of the retreat.
They also included Jenny and Danny, and Steph and Paul.
Vicky, 50, and David, 53, were treated to a romantic hot air balloon ride, while Jenny and Danny watched a movie about themselves in a vintage cinema.
Steph and Paul, meanwhile, were served a slap up lunch in the countryside.
During their meal, Steph and Paul decided they were better off as friends and bowed out of the experiment.
Vicky and David, and Jenny and Danny continued through until the end of the show, where they received the nod of approval from their kids.
Despite being unhappy about several rocky moments, Vicky’s daughter Angharad decided to approve her mum’s new man.
And two months on, they were filmed together with David and Tiana in Vicky and Angharad’s native Wales – proving they were making a go of things.
Once the series finale had aired, host Davina took to X and posted a video of herself looking tearful.
She then encouraged fans to tag someone they think “deserves a place in the retreat”, in the hope a third series is commissioned.
