Plans to build visitor centre at Washington F Pit Museum
The new facility at the Washington F Pit Museum is part of a wider effort to revamp the historic site.
The project, if approved, will see construction start in spring 2026, with the site reopening in summer 2027.
Councillor Beth Jones, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Tourism at Sunderland City Council, said: “Washington F Pit is a proud part of our city’s industrial heritage, and these plans will help bring its story to life for future generations.
“The new visitor centre and café will make the site more accessible and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike, while supporting community activities and learning. It’s a fantastic example of how we’re investing in local culture and green spaces.”
Known for its historic F Pit Winding House and metal headgear, the museum will receive repairs and upgrades, including new indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces.
Proposals also include a play area for younger children, cycle storage, and a 20-space car park with electric vehicle charging.
The visitor centre and café will be built to complement the original colliery buildings, incorporating solar panels and air source heat pumps for sustainability.
Outdoor seating will offer views of a family playpark, featuring equipment inspired by the site’s industrial past.
Inside, the museum will display new exhibits and interpretation panels.
An outdoor 3D model of the colliery site and “time totems” are among the new attractions.
The surrounding landscape will be enhanced with gravel paths, wildflowers, and grassland.
Further upgrades to the park include a refurbished play area, a dog exercise zone, new paths, benches, bins, and more planting.
