Manchester United academy graduate Toby Collyer has so far endured a nightmare spell on loan with Championship side West Bromwich Albion and now looks set to be sidelined for an even longer period
Manchester United academy graduate Toby Collyer has suffered a major injury setback with a persistent hamstring injury continuing to plague him. The 21-year-old joined Championship side West Bromwich Albion in a season-long loan deal in the summer.
A hamstring injury has limited the midfielder to just three Championship starts so far this season. Collyer returned earlier this month and was even deemed fit enough to start in Wednesday evening’s clash with Birmingham City.
But Collyer’s return to the starting line-up lasted for just 11 minutes before he picked up another issue and was forced to depart. And West Brom boss Ryan Mason has claimed that his issue is a recurrence of an injury that has been blighting him for the past few years.
“It’s a muscle injury, yes,” Mason said. “I think it’s challenging for him, it’s disappointing.
“He had a few last season at Man United, that’s why I was very patient with him this season because I wanted to give him the best opportunity to grow into the demands of this league.

“But for something to happen after 10 minutes, it’s disappointing. It looks like it (a hamstring issue). We’ll assess him in the next couple of days and see where we’re at with that.”
Collyer’s issue represents a fresh blow to the midfielder’s hopes of adding some much-needed experience to his CV. Speaking earlier this month, Mason said: “Toby’s a young player, but we know we’re going to need him and he’s going to help us. I’ve wanted Toby for a few weeks now. He’s someone that I really believe in, which is important and I have that belief in all of my players.
“But when you go on loan to somewhere, I think you need to feel like you’re wanted from the club and the manager and he certainly is that. Hopefully we can help him because if we help him improve and grow as a player, then it’s certainly going to be beneficial to us.

“I think there’s loads of room and loads of growth to develop. That’s certainly going to happen on the training pitch. The reality is the game is the best teacher.
“The more game exposure you can get, the better, especially at a young age. I’m sure and I expect that Toby knows that I believe in him, which for me is super important.
“I’m going to put a lot of energy, the same amount of energy that I’ve put into him as every other one of my players, to help them grow and improve.”
Collyer, an under-20 England international, made his breakthrough into the United first team last season. He made 13 appearances under current boss Ruben Amorim before moving to the Hawthorns temporarily earlier this season.
