Tommy Fleetwood’s son Frankie draws Masters focus with bid to reach ninth green

Published

on

Tommy Fleetwood carded one of four holes in one in the Masters Par-Three competition but it was his eight-year-old son Frankie’s personal challenge to clear the water at the last which captured patrons’ imagination.

Fleetwood senior, playing with Ryder Cup team-mates Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, aced the fourth, saying afterwards: “I hadn’t hit a green until that hole so I would have been the last to be predicted for a hole in one.”

But everyone was waiting to see whether Fleetwood junior would finally reach the 9th green.

On Tuesday Fleetwood, with Frankie at the back of the room, had spoken about how his son’s personal quest had become something more significant to him.

“I think more than anything the pressure is on me to keep making the Masters until he reaches the green on the ninth,” said the Southport golfer.

It has led to Frankie become something of a local celebrity but when the moment came he could not deliver for his fans, with the best of his two attempts finishing 15 yards short and wet.

It took the focus off McIlroy, who will begin the defence of his title on Thursday, and his daughter Poppy after she holed a monster putt last year which went viral.

While the par three event is a bit of fun, the Northern Irishman offered his thoughts on what warmer whether this week will mean for the tournament proper.

“I think this week is going to be dry, already it’s a little windy, and the course is already firming up,” he said.

“If the conditions continue to be the way they are, double digits under par would be an amazing score.

“It’s not going to be a low-scoring Masters and that’s going to be fun for everyone.”

Justin Thomas started the entertainment with an ace at the second, while defeated Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley became the first player in the history of the competition to have holes-in-one in successive years.

Wyndham Clark was the fourth man to ace, at the seventh, amid the chaos of competition which bore closer resemblance to a kindergarten as players brought their families along for a relaxed afternoon.

Father-of-five Jason Day described it as “a circus” while Clark himself said: “As a man with no kids I’ll say it’s great birth control but it’s a lot of fun.”

Comedian Kevin Hart, relatively new to the sport, caddied for Bryson DeChambeau but got his chance on the ninth – only to top his tee shot straight into the pond – prompting DeChambeau to embrace him with a bear hug before lifting him into the air.

Aaron Rai won the event with a six-under score but that comes with a caveat as, since the contest started in 1960, no player has ever become par-three and Masters champion in the same week.

“I’m not sure if it’s a good omen or not but just really nice to play well,” said the Wolverhampton golfer, who played alongside two former Masters champions in Patrick Reed and Jon Rahm.

“The experience was phenomenal. I definitely didn’t expect to play quite as well as I did but my wife (Gaurika) was incredible. She read my putts for me – she plays herself – so really good teamwork.”

Liverpool boosted by Isak return before UCL quarterfinal match against PSG | Football News

Published

on

Alexander Isak was included in Liverpool’s squad to face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday.

The Sweden striker traveled with the team to Paris after taking part in training on Tuesday. Isak is set to make his return after having surgery in late December on a broken ankle and fibula.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Isak is fit enough to play but not to start at Parc des Princes.

“He finished close to a week of team training sessions, he can play a part otherwise I wouldn’t take him,” Slot said Tuesday at a pre-game news conference. “We think we can get a performance out of him now, but not to start.”
Isak joined Liverpool in the offseason from Newcastle for a British-record fee for 125 million pounds ($170 million). Before the injury, however, he made a slow start, scoring three goals in 16 games overall after netting 62 in 109 matches for Newcastle.

His return is also good news for Sweden, which hopes to pair him alongside Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres at the World Cup.

Nigeria go into the competition as defending champions after their dramatic triumph in 2025. In that final, the Super Eagles played out a thrilling 2-2 draw against Jamaica before holding their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties, sealing the title in front of a lively crowd.

This time, their journey will begin against Zimbabwe in the first semi-final on May 26. The match offers both sides another opportunity to test themselves after meeting in the World Cup qualifiers earlier this year.

A day later, Jamaica will face India in the second semi-final, a fixture expected to bring plenty of energy from fans of both nations living in the United Kingdom.

The tournament will reach its climax on May 30, when the third-place match and the final will be played on the same day. Beyond the football, organisers have also planned entertainment activities, including live music, international food and performances to create a festival atmosphere.

Nigeria have built a strong reputation in the Unity Cup over the years, winning several editions and establishing themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the competition.

For head coach Éric Chelle, the tournament will also serve as an important part of the team’s preparations for upcoming international matches in June, where the Super Eagles are expected to face strong European opposition.

With confidence high and memories of last year’s victory still fresh, Nigeria will head to London determined to prove once again why they are the team to beat.

Arsenal beat Sporting as Havertz nets late winner in UCL quarterfinal | Football News

Published

on

A second straight Champions League semifinal is in sight for Arsenal. Kai Havertz scored in stoppage time on Tuesday to seal a 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon at Estadio Jose Alvalade to put Mikel Arteta’s team in control of the quarterfinal tie.

The substitute fired past goalkeeper Rui Silva from close range to give Arsenal the advantage ahead of next week’s second leg at the Emirates.

In Tuesday’s other quarterfinal, Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Bernabeu.

Havertz settled a tight game in Portugal by combining with fellow substitute Gabriel Martinelli in the first minute of added time. With one touch the German controlled Martinelli’s defense-splitting pass in the box and then converted with a side-footed finish.

“To score a late goal is always nice,” Havertz told Amazon Prime. “We will take that result. There is still a lot of work to do next week.”
Victory saw Arsenal bounce back from successive defeats which cut its quadruple trophy hunt in half in recent weeks. Losses in the League Cup final and FA Cup quarterfinals had shaken the Premier League leader going into Tuesday’s match.

And it had to withstand an early charge from Sporting in front of a raucous crowd, with player-of-the-match David Raya producing an outstanding save to tip Maximiliano Araujo’s sixth-minute shot onto the bar.

“It could have changed the tie,” Arteta said.

Arsenal also hit the bar in the first half direct from Noni Madueke’s corner, but both teams struggled to create openings.

Martin Zubimendi thought he’d found the breakthrough in the second half with a curling effort from range only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Late on, Raya produced a string of saves. First he pushed away a goal-bound header from Geny Catamo and then pulled off a double stop to deny Catamo again and Luis Suarez.

“For me, the last two seasons, he’s the best keeper in the world. He has saved us so many times,” Havertz said.

But it was Havertz who delivered the goal that pushed Arsenal a step closer to another semifinal, having lost to eventual champion Paris Saint-Germain at that stage last year.

The forward scored the winner for Chelsea in the Champions League final in 2021 and this was another decisive moment for him in this competition.

“He loves the big occasion and the big games,” Arteta said. “And that’s what we need – the big players to turn up when we need them.”
Defeat was Sporting’s first at home since August. The Portuguese team has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

“A small lapse in concentration cost us dearly, and it’s frustrating because it happened in the 90th minute, but we have to lift our heads and move on,” coach Rui Borges told Sport TV.

The scenes of celebration for Arsenal’s players were in stark contrast to the dejection that followed the League Cup final loss to Manchester City and the shock of being beaten by second-division Southampton in the FA Cup on Saturday.

“We had to reveal ourselves today and I talked about identity and other things that we are as a team and that I definitely saw,” Arteta said. “It’s halftime. We are a step closer, now we need to finish the tie at home in front of our people, and if we do that, we’re going to start to dream.

McDavid’s hat trick leads Oilers to win over Sharks

Published

on

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Connor McDavid scored his 15th career hat trick and finished with five points Wednesday night, leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks that moved them into sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division.

McDavid controlled the game almost from the start, scoring on a power play in the first period and then twice in the second to make it 5-2. He also assisted on power-play goals by Vasily Podkolzin and Jack Roslovic to extend his NHL-leading point total to 133. The star centrec needs three goals in the final three games for his second career 50-goal season.

Connor Ingram made eight saves on 10 shots in two periods for Edmonton. Tristan Jarry stopped all four shots he faced in the third.

The win gave the Oilers 90 points, two more than Vegas in the division race. The Golden Knights have one game in hand.

Macklin Celebrini scored his 42nd goal for San Jose to give him 108 points this season, the third-most for a teenager behind Wayne Gretzky’s 137 and Sidney Crosby’s 120.

Kiefer Sherwood also scored for the Sharks, whose playoff hopes were dealt a big blow with the regulation loss. San Jose remains three points behind Nashville and two behind Los Angeles in the race for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Sharks have four games remaining with one game in hand over the Predators.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 21 saves for San Jose.

The Oilers scored on all three power-play chances in the best performance for that unit since Leon Draisaitl went down with a lower-body injury on March 15 after scoring with the man advantage early in that game. Edmonton had been 3 for 27 on the power play in 10-plus games since Draisaitl’s injury.

Sharks: Visit the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night.

Kane guides Bayern to 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in UCL Q/F first leg | Football News

Published

on

Harry Kane delivered for Bayern Munich on his return from injury, scoring a goal and helping set up another in his team’s 2-1 win at Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Kylian Mbappe scored Madrid’s goal after the visitors had taken a two-goal lead at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Kane had been listed as a gameday decision after missing the team’s Bundesliga match last weekend because of an ankle injury.

The result left Bayern with an edge ahead of the second leg in Germany next week as it tries to reach the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2023-24, when it was eliminated by eventual champion Madrid.

“We are still alive, clearly,” Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said. “We are one goal away. We have shown that we can win anywhere. We showed it with the scoring chances that we had against an opponent that we knew was going to make it difficult for us.”
Arsenal won 1-0 at Sporting Lisbon in the other quarterfinal on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Barcelona will host Spanish rival Atletico Madrid, and Liverpool will visit defending champion Paris Saint-Germain.

Madrid and Bayern are playing their sixth knockout-stage meeting in 14 seasons, with the Spanish powerhouse having won four of their five two-leg matchups since the 2011-12 season.

Kane participated in the build up of Bayern’s first goal in the 41st minute, exchanging passes with Serge Gnabry who ultimately fed a through ball for Luis Diaz inside the area. The Colombia forward calmly sent a low shot past Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Kane scored himself in the 46th with a nice one-timer from the top of the area, firmly finding the corner with a low strike. It was his 11th Champions League goal, equaling his best scoring season in the European tournament. He finished with 11 goals in 2024-25.

Kane has scored 22 Champions League goals since the start of the 2024-25 season, the most of anybody.

Mbappe scored his 20th Champions League goal since the start of the 2024-25 season in the 74th, finding the net from close range after a pinpoint low cross by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Mbappe leads the scoring this season with 14 goals, which is double the forward’s total last season. He is three goals shy of the most goals in a single Champions League campaign achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo with Madrid in 2013-14.

Vinicius Junior had one of Madrid’s best chances in a one-on-one situation with Manuel Neuer in the 61st, but the Brazil forward couldn’t get past the Bayern goalkeeper and his attempt hit the outside of the net. A few minutes later, Neuer – who had nine saves in total and was named the man of the match – dived to his right to make a nice stop on a shot by Mbappe.

Neuer had already made two tough saves to keep Madrid from finding the net in the first half on other attempts by Mbappe and Vinicius.

Madrid defender Alvaro Carreras made a goal-line clearance on a shot by Dayot Upamecano in the first-half.

The German champion lost to Inter Milan in the quarterfinals last season. Record 15-time European champion Madrid was eliminated by Arsenal in the last eight last year.

Bayern is unbeaten in its last 14 games in all competitions, with 12 wins. Madrid was coming off a 2-1 loss at Mallorca on Saturday that hurt its La Liga title hopes.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid UCL QF preview, live match time and streaming | Football News

Published

on

Barcelona are set to host Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Wednesday night in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash. The two sides recently met in La Liga, where Barcelona secured a late 2-1 victory thanks to Robert Lewandowski, extending their lead at the top of the table.

Historically, Barcelona have struggled against Atletico in this competition, having been eliminated by them in the quarter-finals on two previous occasions. Despite that, they have enjoyed better results in recent domestic meetings, winning five of their last six encounters, including their latest league triumph. Currently sitting comfortably ahead of their closest rivals in La Liga, Barcelona head into this tie as favourites, although manager Hansi Flick will be cautious of Atletico’s threat.

Barcelona’s route to the quarter-finals was emphatic, highlighted by a dominant aggregate win over Newcastle United, showcasing their attacking firepower. The team has also been in excellent form, remaining unbeaten across all competitions for nearly two months, with young star Lamine Yamal continuing to impress.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid arrive after a difficult spell, having suffered three consecutive defeats, including the recent loss to Barcelona. Managed by Diego Simeone, they are currently fourth in La Liga and appear to be prioritizing cup competitions, including this European tie and an upcoming Copa del Rey final.

Although Atletico have had an inconsistent Champions League campaign, progressing despite multiple defeats, their past success against Barcelona in Europe could give them confidence heading into this crucial encounter.

Barcelona Team News

Barcelona will be without several key players for Wednesday’s clash, as Andreas Christensen (knee), Raphinha (hamstring), Frenkie de Jong (hamstring) and Marc Bernal (ankle) are all ruled out through injury. However, there is a boost with Ronald Araujo declared fit after his recent knock against Atletico.

Jules Kounde has also returned to action, coming off the bench in the last league match, and is expected to slot straight back into the starting lineup.

In attack, Robert Lewandowski is likely to lead the line once again, while Marcus Rashford could retain his place on the left flank after an impressive showing, making a strong case to start despite competition for spots.

Atletico Team News

For Atletico Madrid, there is some positive news on the fitness front as Jan Oblak, Marc Pubill and Rodrigo Mendoza have resumed training and could be available for selection against Barcelona.

However, Pablo Barrios is still unavailable due to a thigh injury, while both Jose Gimenez and Johnny Cardoso remain doubtful with fitness concerns.

In terms of team selection, Julian Alvarez, who has recently been linked with a move to Barcelona, is expected to return to the starting lineup after beginning the last match on the bench. Meanwhile, David Hancko, Ademola Lookman and Matteo Ruggeri are also likely to be reinstated in the XI.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid probable starting eleven:

Barcelona starting 11: J Garcia; Kounde, Cubarsi, Martin, Cancelo; E Garcia, Pedri; Yamal, Fermin, Rashford; Lewandowski

Jimmy Kimmel gives UCLA women’s basketball champs fake trophy to hand to Trump

UCLA’s national champion women’s basketball team was given an eyebrow-raising political quest by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.

During a group interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Tuesday, a discussion with Lauren Betts, Kiki Rice, Gabriela Jaquez, Angela Dugalić and coach Cori Close turned political.

After Kimmel pointed out that former President Barack Obama made a social media post congratulating the team on their championship win, the host asked if President Donald Trump had reached out yet.

The players answered “no” in response to Kimmel’s Trump question.

But then Kimmel steered the conversation deeper into an anti-Trump routine.

“I’m sure you know he’s busy. Um he’s in two weeks you’ll hear from him,” Kimmel said. “In the event that you do get invited to the White House and you decide to go to the White House, I have something for you.”

Kimmel then pulled out a silver trophy that hardly resembled the NCAA championship trophy that sat on his desk.

“What I want you to do is bring this fake trophy we’ve made to the White House. He’s not going to know. But when you bring a trophy, he sometimes takes it and keeps it for himself. So, this is for you guys to take to the White House. And then you can say, ‘President Trump, we want you to have this.’ And he’ll be so happy. You’ll probably get an endowment and you’ll be able to keep the real one,” Kimmel said.

Close laughed at Kimmel’s joke, while the players lightly clapped their hands, exchanging light laughs.

Meanwhile, social media users criticized Kimmel for turning the sports interview into a Trump-focused rant.

“Even celebrating their championship he has to make it about himself and his hatred for Trump. What an a—hole,” one X user wrote.

One X user mocked Kimmel, writing, “What will he do when Trump is out of office? Is the show cooked?”

Chris Gabehart moves to deny Joe Gibbs Racing’s “desperate” motion in recent legal filings

Published

on

Ex Joe Gibbs Racing competition director Chris Gabehart responded to his former employer’s court filings. NASCAR insider Kelly Crandall shared Gabehart’s thoughts on the Cup Series team’s latest request in the ongoing legal battle.

JGR allegedly accused the former employee of leaking the organization’s sensitive data to the rival team. As per the stock car racing team, Gabehart circulated data, including drivers’ salaries, team payroll, sponsor revenue, and similar details. As a result, the organization has filed the lawsuit and is seeking over $8 million in damages for the data breach.

On April 2, Joe Gibbs Racing filed for additional discovery, stating that they had recently become aware of deleted texts between Chris Gabehart and Spire co-owner Jeff Dickerson. Gabehart countered that he voluntarily and transparently disclosed the deleted messages. The former JGR employee further called this pursuit a “desperate” attempt and stated:

JGR’s litigation strategy—file motion after motion, accuse first and ask questions later—cannot manufacture evidence of disclosure of confidential JGR information where none exists. JGR is clearly desperate. It has yet to identify a single verified instance in which Mr. Gabehart transmitted, disclosed, or used any JGR Confidential Information.

Continuing, Chris Gabehart remained adamant that he did not share any sensitive information with any third party. Additionally, Spire Motorsports also claimed that the deleted texts contained no information related to Joe Gibbs Racing, nor do they want any.

As a result, Gabehart agreed to subpoena his phone carrier to recover the deleted texts with one condition. He wants to seek the discovery of the cell phones of Heather Gibbs, Eric Shaeffer, Dave Alpern, and Toni Rogers.

“These materials provide a comprehensive roadmap for JGR’s competitive strategies”: Joe Gibbs Racing veteran candidly shared his take on the alleged data breach by Chris Gabehart

In March 2026, Joe Gibbs Racing revealed that the team had hired a private investigator to follow Chris Gabehart ahead of the lawsuit. Later, the Cup Series team shared the findings as legal documents in the courtroom. The documents featured pictures of Gabehart meeting with Spire Motorsports owners in December 2025.

The meeting between the two parties was held near Spire Motorsports’ facility. Following that, Motorsports shared a report featuring Denny Hamlin’s take on the alleged data breach by his former crew chief. The #11 Toyota Camry XSE driver stated:

“The materials Gabehart took—including car setups, simulation files, post-race analytics, tire management strategies, fuel mileage calculations, and pit crew performance data—represent decades of JGR’s research, development, and innovation specifically designed to optimize speed and win races.”

“These materials provide a comprehensive roadmap for JGR’s competitive strategies and are the exact set of proprietary and confidential information any of JGR’s competitors would want in order to understand JGR’s processes, technological capabilities, and payment structures that have led to JGR’s overwhelming success,” he added.

Denny Hamlin concluded that Chris Gabehart’s actions “would cause major harm” to Joe Gibbs Racing. Meanwhile, Spire Motorsports also denied all the claims of gaining any sensitive information about JGR.
