Hoda Kotb’s surprise decision to leave her role on NBC’s Today show after 26 years was reportedly partly a result of being asked to take a pay cut by the network.
The broadcast journalist, who turned 60 last month, is thought to have been receiving a salary of more than $20m a year.
Puck News reported that NBC executives “made clear to her agents that such stratospheric contracts were no longer justifiable given the industry’s inexorable decline.”
The Independent has contacted representatives for Kotb and NBC for comment.
Ratings have been falling for morning news shows across the board for several years. For context, a decade ago Today was able to bring in upwards of 4.6 million daily viewers. This month, the show averaged a little over 2.5 million.
Last Thursday, Kotb announced her departure during an episode of the long-running morning show.
“I realized that it was time for me to turn the page at 60, and to try something new,” she said. “I remembered standing outside looking at these beautiful bunch of people with these gorgeous signs, and I thought, ‘This is what the top of the wave feels like for me.’ And I thought it can’t get better, and I decided that this is the right time for me to kind of move on.”
She added that spending more time with her young daughters, Haley, seven, and Hope, five, was also an important part of her decision.
“Obviously I had my kiddos late in life, and I was thinking that they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie that I have,” she said. “I feel like we only have a finite amount of time.
“And so, with all that being said, this is the hardest thing in the world,” Kotb said.
She clarified that she will continue hosting the Today show alongside co-anchor Savannah Guthrie through January 1, 2025.
“It’s kind of a big deal for me,” Kotb said. “I’ve been practicing so I wouldn’t cry, but anyway, I did.”

Kotb has been an integral part of NBC News for nearly three decades, having first joined the network in 1998 as a correspondent on its weekly nighttime show Dateline.
In 2008, she moved on to co-host the fourth hour of the Today show with Kathie Lee Gifford and then Jenna Bush Hager in 2019.
After NBC fired Today show host Matt Lauer in 2017 following accusations of sexual misconduct, Kotb stepped in alongside Guthrie as a temporary replacement. Weeks later, her role became permanent, as viewers responded well to her and Guthrie.
Speaking to the New York Times, Guthrie commended Kotb’s decision, saying: “It takes such guts to leave a place where you’re so comfortable, so beloved. There’s nothing rash about this.”
She added that she was “super proud” and “super heartbroken” about the news.

Agony aunt Deidre Sanders reveals her breast cancer has returned as she urges This Morning viewers to get checked
AGONY aunt Deidre Sanders has revealed her breast cancer has returned two years after she was first diagnosed.
The TV star shared her “shock” diagnosis on This Morning today.

She told hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard she had no symptoms and it was detected through her scheduled mamogram.
Deidre, 78, said: “No I haven’t had symptoms, I haven’t felt run down I haven’t felt tired it’s purely down to having the mammogram that showed it.
“And then you get referred back and I had a biopsy, and then it revealed it was cancer.”

Doctor Who actor John Simm has been left “questioning everything” after making a life-changing discovery on a DNA TV show.
The British star, known by many as The Master in BBC’s long-running sci-fi series as well as DI Sam Tyler in Life on Mars, appeared on ITV’s DNA Journey when he realised that the man he always thought was his father was not his biological parent.
Simm participated on the show alongside his Life on Mars co-star Philip Glenister, revealing he signed up so Glenister would not have to take part alone.
But it was Simm whose life has been most altered by the series after being told that his true biological father was not Ronald Simm, as he believed, but Terry Smith.
Speaking on the episode, as reported by MailOnline, Simm said: “It’s turned out to be such a massive thing in my life and all I was doing was a favour for Phil so he didn’t have to do it on his own. It’s spun my world… everything I thought I knew wasn’t real.”
The Grace actor considered quitting the show after making the discovery but decided to utilise the experts for information on his real father.
In the episode, Simm learnt that Smith is dead, but is told he used to frequent the same working men’s clubs as Ronald, a musician who died in 2015.
He said: “The thing that blows my mind is me and my dad played [gigs] around here loads of times. We definitely played here a lot and he might have been in the same pub one night and watched me play.
“I can’t get it out of my head because we played this area in the 1980s and he was here – he was working in men’s clubs. It’s one of those mad Back to the Future–Life on Mars things.”

Simm then revealed a chat he had with his mother before filming the show that took on new light after his astonishing discovery: ”When they had me, in the 1960s, they were both young. They were together and then they split up and were both with other people and then they got back together and then they had me. And I’d never heard this story before.”
Simm and Glenister’s episode of DNA Journey airs on 9 October. Simm will be playing Scrooge in The Old Vic’s production of A Christmas Carol, from 11 November to 6 January.

DAVID Wicks returns to the Square next week in EastEnders, a decade after his exit.

Cindy (Michelle Collins) is left reeling to see David back in Albert Square and keeps out of sight.
Cindy tells her ex husband George Knight (Colin Salmon) about why David being back has her rattled.
He advises her to front it out.
After meeting with Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman), David is soon distracted when he gets a shocking blast from his past.
He is stunned to see Cindy is very much alive and standing in front of him.
A shocked David has a lot of questions for Cindy as they catch up on the past two decades.
Meanwhile, Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) is horrified when Bianca Jackson (Pasty Palmer) reveals that David is back in Walford.
Later, Ian goes to see Anna Knight (Molly Rainford) to make amends and tells her that he’s got a big plan for Cindy.
Soon, Cindy is forced to juggle several different tricky situations.
Whilst David and Bianca have some deep conversations.
Elsewhere, Junior Knight (Micah Balfour) starts to talk to George about his mystery woman, as his feelings for Cindy weigh heavy on his heart.
George is intrigued as Junior admits that what started as a fling has developed into something much more serious, and he believes the woman feels the same way.
George gives him some fatherly advice, not knowing he’s talking about Cindy. Will he figure out it’s her?
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

The Sun exclusively reported how Michelle, 62, was down to £20,000 in her company accounts when she agreed to a shock back-from-the-dead return to Albert Square last year.
Her character, Cindy Beale, was presumed dead off-camera in 1998.
Yet what about the 2024 exits?
Earlier this summer, loyal soap fans appeared to note how Stevie Mitchell had “quit” the long-running series.
It came after Alan Ford enjoyed just six-months on-screen.
Bobby Beale actor Clay Milner Russell also left this year after five years in Walford.
Fans also feared Martin Fowler actor James Bye would “quit out of boredom” over recent storylines.
Additionally, a host of stars have quit the BBC soap for Hollywood fame.
One of the most successful stars to come from the BBC One soap is Rob Kazinsky.
He played Stacey Slater’s brother Sean Slater from 2006 to 2009, he has starred in Hollywood blockbusters Pacific Rim and Captain Marvel.
Ben Hardy, who quit EastEnders as Bobby Beale almost a decade ago, went on to break Hollywood the following year, when he starred as Archangel in X-Men: Apocalypse.
Since then, he has played Roger Taylor in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, and he starred in Michael Bay’s Netflix movie 6 Underground.
Michelle Ryan played Zoe Slater until 2005.
She starred as the lead in short-lived American series Bionic Woman from 2007 to 2008.
