Strictly Come Dancing’s summer of scandal is not over yet

Strictly Come Dancing’s summer of scandal is not over yet

Strictly Come Dancing is meant to be enjoying its 20th anniversary victory lap, but there’s a dark shadow hanging over the latest edition of the competition.

Over the weekend, the judging panel dished out their verdicts on each famous contestant’s carefully choreographed routine, wielding their glittering scoring paddles to award points out of 10. Then on Monday, the BBC issued a Strictly judgement of a very different kind – one that may have lasting ramifications for the sparkling jewel in the broadcaster’s light entertainment crown. After weeks of heightened speculation, the corporation published the results of its probe into complaints levelled at professional dancer Giovanni Pernice by former contestant Amanda Abbington

The Sherlock actor, who left last year’s competition after just a few weeks, had accused Pernice of bullying behaviour. Following months of investigation, which reportedly involved sifting through thousands of hours of behind-the-scenes footage, the BBC confirmed that they had upheld complaints relating to verbal bullying and harassment, but concluded that Pernice had not been physically aggressive. They also issued an apology to Abbington, and acknowledged that coming forward “would not have been an easy thing to do”; the actor said that she felt the verdict was a “vindication”, while Pernice’s spokesperson said he is “pleased” that the report “has not found any evidence of threatening or abusive behaviour” by him.

BBC bosses will surely be hoping that the release of the investigation’s results marks a natural conclusion to what has been a tumultuous chapter in the dance show’s history, a period that also saw another popular pro, Graziano Di Prima, depart under a cloud after separate allegations surfaced (he later admitted to having kicked his celebrity partner Zara McDermott during a rehearsal). But that seems like wishful thinking. For all the cheerful smiles and dazzling routines, Strictly’s summer of scandal is refusing to fade.

Although Pernice has been cleared of the most serious complaints against him, the acknowledgment of verbal bullying is an undeniable stain on Strictly’s reputation as the nicest show on TV. That image was never entirely spotless, what with all the chatter about the so-called “Strictly curse” that has claimed more than a few relationships, but compared to scandal-beset shows like Love Island, it felt like a show you could enjoy without getting too mired in the ethics of reality television. It was uplifting and big-hearted rather than cynical and potentially exploitative. Abbington’s allegations, and the subsequent investigation, have reminded us that the “reality” we see on screen isn’t always, well, real.

For a show that always felt authentic underneath all the larger-than-life sparkles, in a Dolly Parton “I may look fake but I’m real where it counts” sort of way, that fissure between appearance and actuality could prove damaging. Fans want to believe that the Strictly “journey” is as positive and life-affirming as we’d previously thought; perhaps some will be left feeling alienated by this acknowledgement that all was not well backstage. Indeed, the first live show of the season was reportedly watched by almost one million fewer viewers than last year, with 6.4 million tuning in, down from 7.3 million in 2023 (the BBC’s chief content officer Charlotte Moore suggested those figures didn’t tell the whole story, as “a lot of people watch Strictly over the course of a week, so it’s absolutely in line with the ratings of last year”).

So far, the show has not addressed any of behind-the-scenes turmoil while on air. That may have made sense during the opening episodes, before the investigation results were confirmed, but it’s no longer possible to distract from the (diamanté-embellished) elephant in the ballroom. Even if a to-camera speech feels a bit too reminiscent of Holly Willoughby’s “firstly, are you OK?” performance in the wake of This Morning’s scandal last year, there are other ways that Strictly could allude to what’s happened and prove that things are changing for the better.

In order to demonstrate that this is a new era of Strictly 2.0, perhaps they could show viewers some of the new safety protocols in place or let the much-discussed chaperones appear on camera during rehearsal footage. Whatever they decide, acknowledging the scandal feels imperative. Because they might find that, like the professional-grade fake tan beloved by Strictly participants, this particular mess will almost certainly leave a mark that can’t easily be scrubbed off.

Jocelyn Wildenstein, 82, looks loved up with fiance Lloyd Klein, 56, at dinner in Paris

JOCELYN Wildenstein took time away from Paris Fashion Week for a romantic night out with her fiancé.

The socialite, 82, is best known as “The Catwoman” and dressed all in black for a chic night out in the French capital.

Beaming alongside Lloyd Klein, who she’s been engaged to since 2017, the pair walked arm-in-arm as they headed into the restaurant.

Wildenstein wore leather trousers and a sheer-panelled black top for the date night, with a matching blazer to keep the chill off her arms.

She wore her wavy blonde hair loose, with it flicking up at her shoulders.

Meanwhile fashion designer Klein wore shades, a baseball cap and jacket, with smart trousers and shoes as they arrived.

The socialite has shot to fame due to having extensive cosmetic surgery on her face, believed to have spent millions on facelifts, giving her high cheek bones and ‘cat-eyes’ that give her a feline resemblance.

However, she has previously denied ever having plastic surgery, or having a surgery addiction, but has vowed she won’t stop going under the knife.

In 2023, she posted a photo of herself as a teenager as “proof” she always had high features, accusing people of photoshopping her to look worse.

Wildenstein and Klein have been together since 2003, four years after her messy divorce from Alec Wildenstein, a French billionaire businessman and art dealer who she married in a Las Vegas elopement in 1978.

The pair were together for 21 years before their marriage came to an abrupt end when she caught him sleeping with a model in their New York home.

He later threatened her with a gun during the altercation and spent a night in jail as a result.

In the aftermath, Wildenstein set a record for divorce settlements in the US, becoming one of America’s most wealthiest woman.

She reportedly secured a £2billion divorce payment and £80million a year in maintenance – at one point owning three apartments in Trump Tower.

Wildenstein claimed to Vanity Fair that her high cheekbones and feline like features were actually due to genetics from her Swiss grandmother, though acknowledged having a facelift to appear younger for her then husband.

But in the same Vanity Fair interview, done in 1998, ex-husband Alec claimed she was “rearranging her face like a piece of furniture” while another friend said that

She met Klein in 2003 at New York Fashion week, and they got engaged in 2017, but are yet to walk down the aisle, after postponing their originally planned 2018 marriage.

The fashion designer proposed with a 32 carat ring which he claims is worth “millions” and requires security guards when she’s not wearing it.

However, their relationship hasn’t always run smoothly, with Wildenstein getting arrested and her mugshot released in December 2016 after she reportedly ‘slashed Klein with scissors’.

However, the charges were later dropped with no further investigation, and he proposed just months later.

New movies on Netflix in October as streaming service adds long-awaited 2024 sequel

New movies on Netflix in October as streaming service adds long-awaited 2024 sequel

Another month, another busy month for Netflix.

With October comes a bursting list of titles set to be added to (and removed from) the streaming service over the next 31 days – from exciting new films (Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour), anime gems (Blue Box) and new episodes of hit shows Heartstopper and Outer Banks, which pulled viewers back in with a wild ending to its latest run.

But it’s the release of the long-awaited sequel The Platform 2 that will most excite fans. The Platform proved a word-of-mouth success upon its initial release in 2019 and this follow-up, directed once again by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, will arrive in time for spooky season.

Elsewhere, capitalising on the success – and controversy – of Ryan Murphy’s Monster season two, there will be a documentary telling the real-life story of the Menendez brothers, while film fans will be delighted to learn that October will mark the streaming debut of Studio Ghibli’s latest film The Boy and the Heron.

Find the full list of every movie and TV series being added in October below.
