Tom Hanks' Acclaimed 'Forrest Gump' Reunion Lands on a New Streaming Home

Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen) will return to the box office for a fifth time soon, as the hotly anticipated Toy Story 5 will release on June 19, 2026. 30 years since Hanks first voiced the world’s favorite cinematic toy cowboy, he is reprising the role once again alongside Allen’s spaceman. However, back in 1995, Hanks wasn’t just starring alongside an astronaut (real or not), he also portrayed one in one of the year’s best movies.

Based on the book Lost Moon by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger, two-time Academy Award winner Ron Howard‘s Apollo 13 is one of Hanks’ best movies, and also boasts performances from the likes of Bill Paxton, Ed Harris, Hanks’ Forrest Gump co-star Gary Sinise, Kevin Bacon, and many more. This December, you’ll be able to catch Apollo 13 on a brand-new streaming site, as the masterpiece joins the ranks of HBO Max on December 1. The film is one of several movies on HBO Max’s latest slate of new arrivals, joining the likes of Will Smith‘s After Earth and the family classic E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. For anyone yet to see Apollo 13, a synopsis reads:

“This Hollywood drama is based on the events of the Apollo 13 lunar mission, astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) find everything going according to plan after leaving Earth’s orbit. However, when an oxygen tank explodes, the scheduled moon landing is called off. Subsequent tensions within the crew and numerous technical problems threaten both the astronauts’ survival and their safe return to Earth.”

‘Apollo 13’ Was a Huge Hit With Critics

At a time when the world simply couldn’t get enough of Hanks’ movies, Apollo 13 capitalized on Forrest Gump‘s success the year prior and became an Academy darling, earning a remarkable nine Oscar nominations and winning two. Dubbed “one of the year’s best films” by Roger Ebert, the movie is still held in high regard three decades on, boasting an impressive 94% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus on the site reads, “In recreating the troubled space mission, Apollo 13 pulls no punches: it’s a masterfully told drama from director Ron Howard, bolstered by an ensemble of solid performances.”

Apollo 13 will soon be available to stream on HBO Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
