Jamie Lee Curtis’ Forgotten Christmas Flick Finds a New Streaming Home
Christmas has now very much arrived, and the festive season means the world’s annual re-watch of their favorite holiday movies. From classics like It’s a Wonderful Life and White Christmas to modern favorites like Elf and The Holdovers, there truly is something for everyone. With that in mind, it was terrible to recently learn that an underrated festive comedy, Christmas with the Kranks, would be leaving Netflix ahead of the holiday season.
Fear not, fans of this slapstick yuletide flick, Christmas with the Kranks has found itself a new streaming home in time for the festive period. Officially, as of December 1, Christmas with the Kranks will be available to stream on HBO Max. The movie boasts the leading talents of Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen, as they bring a reminder of the importance of traditional Christmas values wrapped up in a chaotic comedy bow. An adaptation of John Grisham’s novel Skipping Christmas, the film’s 5% critics’ score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes is indicative of a movie underappreciated at a time when Hallmark-adjacent Christmas movies weren’t as popular as they are today. For anyone yet to see Christmas with the Kranks, the film’s synopsis reads:
“Finally alone for the holidays, Luther (Tim Allen) and Nora Krank (Jamie Lee Curtis) plan to eschew the Christmas traditions and take a cruise in the Caribbean instead. This doesn’t sit well with their Christmas-obsessed neighbors Vic Frohmeyer (Dan Aykroyd) and Walt Scheel (M. Emmet Walsh), who are determined to win the annual “best decorated street” competition, and the Kranks soon find themselves social outcasts because of their lack of Christmas spirit.”
Was ‘Christmas with the Kranks’ a Box Office Hit?
Produced on a reported budget of $60 million, Christmas with the Kranks needed to make a minimum of $120 million in box office revenue even to come close to financial success. Sadly, it fell short, finishing with a total global haul of $96 million. Split between $73.7 million in domestic revenue and a further $22.7 million from overseas markets, Christmas with the Kranks was likely affected by its terrible critical reception and simply couldn’t recover in a disappointing theatrical run.
Jamie Lee Curtis’ Christmas with the Kranks is officially heading to HBO Max in time for Christmas. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for all the latest streaming stories.
