Craft Beer Cave in Penrhyn Bay says they remain ‘completely neutral’ and welcome anyone ‘who likes good beer’
A beer shop has spoken out after a post featuring a visit from Nigel Farage sparked a fierce debate, with some customers threatening to boycott the business. Craft Beer Cave in Penrhyn Bay, near Llandudno, opened its doors in 2022 and has built up a devoted following, boasting a near-flawless Google review rating.
Earlier this week, the shop was visited by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who was touring the area ahead of May’s Senedd election. The business subsequently shared a photograph of co-owner Beverley Williams alongside the party leader.
The shop stressed the post was “not a political post” and that they welcome anyone “who likes good beer”. Beverley also noted that Plaid Cymru canvassers had visited the previous week, adding she would have shared a photo of that too had she remembered to take one. However, the Farage post ignited a storm on their Facebook page, generating a flood of responses on the matter. While some pledged to take their custom elsewhere, many others rallied behind the business in its defence.
One individual commented: “Sorry, you’ve just lost my custom. I’ll stick to buying from Vinomondo.”
Others acknowledged the shop’s right to serve all customers but questioned the judgement of sharing the image on social media.
One commented: “To serve him is one thing, to post a picture is another”, while another noted: “Have him in by all means (personally the words barge pole spring to mind) but posting might not be a good idea.”
One customer went on to explain her reasons for not returning to the shop. She remarked: “Call me a child (to those saying anyone offended by this post is childish) but I am gutted to see his face in a place I love to go to when in Llandudno and it absolutely makes me never want to come back. Open to all is one thing but promoting it is another.
“And it is a free world, and that means I’m free not to come back. I find him probably third or fourth most offensive person in the entire world so certainly don’t want to spend my money anywhere he’s been featured… All the best anyway. You have a great place and we’ve enjoyed watching it grow.”
However, others responded in defence of the local establishment. One commented: “If Nigel had popped in to the Co-op next door for a couple bars of chocolate would you all stop going to that Co-op? No, of course not.
“I’m not a massive fan of Keir Starmer but if he popped in to the Craft Beer Cave it wouldn’t bother me the slightest I’d still drink in there. Bev and Rolly keep on doing what your doing I for one will still be popping in for my hazy pale ales. Long live the Craft Beer Cave and all who drink there.”
Another person stated: “I’m astonished that people have declared their refusal to drink in an establishment that welcomes all. Those who choose to no longer to go, based on one paying customer, perhaps it’s for the best.”
One individual commented: “Beverley works so hard to make her business a success, and that’s what she runs a business, a public house, open to the public no matter who they are. She also when the pandemic hit helped so many people and supports so many charities, so all the haters pipe down.”
The proprietors themselves stated: “This is not a political post he likes good beer and wanted to support our independent business. We welcome anyone who likes good beer.
“Nigel Farage heard the rumours about the best beer shop in North Wales so he came for a pint.”
They went on to say: “Just to say – we’re a small independent business and remain completely neutral. It was simply a nice opportunity for us to get a bit of attention and showcase what we do.
“At the end of the day, we’re here for great beer, good vibes, and everyone is welcome.”
