Raye Shares Her First Major Fashion Campaign With A Polar Bear
Despite meeting at the Met Gala (a meet-cute for many designer-muse pairings), the Brit Award winner, who grew up singing in Croydon churches, had her first encounter with Stella McCartney, the brand, many moons ago. She fell for a cropped faux leather jacket and lived in it every day for two years to help streamline her “chaotic and different” wardrobe. “Stella is really good at covering all the bases for someone, like me, who finds herself in many different environments across a single day,” notes the 26-year-old singular talent, who is known for her ’40s and ’50s jazz age-inspired looks on stage, but lives in decidedly less diva-like clothes day to day. “I have very big extremes of just loving fabulous dresses and gowns, and then the complete opposite and just wanting to feel comfortable… but my style is evolving all the time.”
The self-described “all or nothing” musician took tips from the powerhouse women on set (Eva Mendes moonlights as a horse in her own striking fashion creature narrative), but McCartney herself has long been inspired by Raye’s outspoken attitude to the music industry’s injustices, and has soundtracked her days in the atelier to her infectious – and important – songs, including “Environmental Anxiety” and “Mother Nature”.
Moreover, Stella’s own “It’s About Fucking Time” message harks back to a slogan tank top she wore to her father’s 1999 inauguration into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, showing her life-long links with the music sector, and will appear across fly posters and PETA protest signs this autumn as part of McCartney’s rallying cry to save our planet. Already, Dua Lipa, Charlie XCX, Troye Sivan, Madonna, Zoë Kravitz and Paris Hilton have worn the vests, which are possibly the perfect low-key glamorous piece to tap into both sides of Raye’s fashion persona. “I always had big dreams and stuff, but I didn’t think…” she trails off, lost for adequate words to describe the experience of seeing herself on a billboard. Campaign life suits this unassuming bombshell.
