Heavy rain to disrupt ScotRail train network as Met Office issue weather warning

Several routes will be impacted by speed restrictions in the wet weather

Heavy rain in Scotland is set to cause chaos on the train network with delays expected and the Met Office issuing a weather warnign.

ScotRail have warned that due to predicted downpours speed restrictions will be in place and impacting journeys from Monday, December 1.

The rail company have warned that many routes will be impacted as the Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for rain. The announcement says: “Due to heavy rain, speed restrictions will be in place from the 1st of December on these routes.”

The Met Office warn that heavy rain could bring some disruption on Monday, as roads are likely to flood also impacting those travelling by car. Certain areas could be faced with up to 60mm of rain throughout the day.

The routes affected are:

  • Carlisle – Dumfries
  • Glasgow Central – Carlisle
  • Glasgow Central – Kilmarnock
  • Largs – Glasgow Central
  • Glasgow Central – Largs
  • Wemyss Bay – Glasgow Central
  • Glasgow Central – Wemyss Bay

The weather warning is in place from midnight until 9pm as there is likely to be a second wave of rain during the evening, with all rain eventually clearing by late Monday, according to the forecaster. ScotRail suggest to check your rote prior to travelling and advise to leave extra time to accommodate for delays.

Those impacted by the weather warning should prepare for flooding. The Met Office say to consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit as the rain is likely to flood homes in the area.

The downpour of rain is expected to move steadily east across the area during Monday, turning heavy at times during the morning with it expected to ease during the afternoon. ScotRail have not announced when the speed restrictions will be in place until however the weather warning remains in place in parts of Scotland on Tuesday, December 2.
