Is the ZimaCube the Ultimate NAS for your Home Lab?

#nas #homelab #techtok

In this video, I unbox and dive deep into the ZimaCube NAS, the latest innovation from IceWhale, who previously brought us the ZimaBlade NAS through Kickstarter. Whether you’re building a home lab or looking for a compact NAS server, the ZimaCube offers a powerful, silent NAS solution. I’ll be comparing the ZimaCube Pro and the standard model, examining the ZimaCube specifications, and reviewing how this device stands up to other NAS options like Unraid NAS box setups and popular solutions from Synology or QNAP.

With its Intel N100 quad-core processor and the ability to handle large amounts of data with silent NAS drives, the ZimaCube is a strong contender for those looking to add a mini PC NAS to their network. In this review, I cover everything from the build quality and hardware performance to its storage capabilities and potential use cases for different environments.

IceWhale has outdone themselves with the ZimaCube NAS 2024 release, and I’ll show you why it’s a fantastic option for both homelab enthusiasts and small businesses. If you’re thinking about backing or buying the ZimaCube Kickstarter NAS, or upgrading from the ZimaBlade custom NAS, this video will give you all the info you need to make an informed decision.

Shillin' like a villain. At least it isn't an Asic that will be unprofitable in 2 months 🤷‍♂️

The bundle with the RTX 2000 ADA is intriguing. That's basically a 3070 with 16GB VRAM in a SFF form factor and would allow you to lots of things at a NAS level, like image generation or mass file compression/tagging utilizing the GPU. Often times, you load up terabytes of images and videos before you realize you need a good way to organize/categorize them and/or compress them to save storage. There are several tools that can be ran on NAS's to do this, but being able to accomplish those tasks with a GPU and take a day versus weeks could be well worth the cost.

I understand the price is important, but after issues with a W680 platform for months, because something wasn't working, I got fed up, sent everything back and got myself an EPYC 8024P + RAM + motherboard.

Sure, it has much more headroom power-wise, but in idle it only consumes 64Wh with 4 U.2 NVMe SSDs, 96Gb DDR5 ECC RDIMMs, 1 m.2 NVMe and 5 fans. And the 8024P is the lowest.

The fun things are 96 PCIe lanes as well as enough headroom for RAM, storage etc. I was lucky to get it mildly used (in pieces, mind you) for about 700€ though.

For someone, who doesn't need the extra, something as simple as you reviewed, looks fine though.

Pickup the ZimaCube directly from the IceWhale site: https://cutt.ly/FeIWBmI9
Or consider using my Amazon link here, to get other Zima gear too: https://amzn.to/4ezkrO2
These are the NVMe drives I am using: https://amzn.to/4gDENHP
This is a similar model to the long term storage drives I am using too: https://amzn.to/4gG5xat

Let me know your thoughts on this NAS.
I already have it up and running with ZimaOS, so subscribe to see how well that works in my homelab network!

Early Computing: Crash Course Computer Science #1

Hello, world! Welcome to Crash Course Computer Science! So today, we’re going to take a look at computing’s origins, because even though our digital computers are relatively new, the need for computation is not. Since the start of civilization itself, humans have had an increasing need for special devices to help manage laborious tasks, and as the scale of society continued to grow, these computational devices began to play a crucial role in amplifying our mental abilities. From the abacus and astrolabe to the difference engine and tabulating machine, we’ve come a long way to satisfying this increasing need, and in the process completely transformed commerce, government, and daily life.
