Having completed two full weeks of release in theaters, Nuremberg isn’t turning out to be the box office success that everybody involved would’ve liked. It only recently passed the $10 million mark domestically, and has barely scraped past the lifetime hauls of fellow World War II movies Das Boot and Downfall — both German-language crossover hits. However, Nuremberg is nowhere near the same league as certain classics of the genre, such as Dunkirk and Saving Private Ryan. The movie follows the trial of Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring, who gets involved in a battle of wits with a doctor. Nuremberg is headlined by the Oscar-winning Russell Crowe and Rami Malek.
Despite its star-power, the movie has only grossed half the lifetime domestic haul of one of the most underrated WWII action movies. Released in 2018, the movie Overlord was long rumored to be the secret fourth installment of the Cloverfield franchise, seeing as it was produced by J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot banner and marketed in a rather coy fashion. Overlord ended up being its own beast, and opened to solid reviews. But it underperformed commercially, grossing only around $42 million worldwide against a reported budget of $38 million. Directed by Julius Avery and featuring Wyatt Russell and Jovan Adepo in the lead roles, the movie generated around $21 million domestically.
‘Overlord’ Has New Competition in Theaters
Overlord follows a platoon of American soldiers who are sent on a mission to infiltrate a Nazi facility where they stumble upon strange human experiments being conducted. The movie currently holds a “certified fresh” 82% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Part revisionist war drama, part zombie thriller, and part all-out genre gorefest, Overlord offers A-level fun for B-movie fans of multiple persuasions.” Somewhat surprisingly, the film’s audience score on RT is languishing at a rather rough 67%. On the other hand, Nuremberg is enjoying a 96% audience score on the aggregator. Fans of WWII-era action movies also have the option of checking out Sisu: Road to Revenge, currently in theaters. The Finnish-language sequel opened to strong box office reception and excellent reviews last week.
