Stephen Mooney was jailed for the murder of his wife Anna and the dad is now preparing for his first Christmas behind bars as a lifer.

A dad’s chilling words to a paramedic while kneeling beside his wife’s lifeless body with a knife embedded in her chest have been revealed. Stephen Mooney is currently serving in Mountjoy Prison and is facing his first Christmas behind bars as a life-sentence prisoner.

This follows his eventual guilty plea to murdering his wife Anna Mooney, 43, at their Kilbarrack home in north Dublin in June 2023, while their two children were upstairs. The 53-year-old captured her horrifying final moments after covertly hiding a camera in an attempt to discover her phone PIN to reveal a suspected affair.

However, a source has revealed to the Irish Sun on Sunday that Mooney is “saying nothing” about the killing to fellow prisoners and that the “guilt is eating away at him”. And this sense of remorse was perhaps evident just moments after he fatally stabbed Anna.

Mooney, a former estate agent with no prior convictions, rang the emergency services at 1.09am on June 15 to report the horror, and a Dublin Fire Brigade officer was first on the scene. The paramedic discovered Mooney over his wife’s body on the kitchen floor, reports the Mirror.

The killer’s first words to them were: “I’ve killed her… She’s my wife. This has been going on for years. I’m really sorry. She’s been having an affair.”

A police officer then arrived and noted that Mooney said: “She’s having an affair. It got out of control, I tried to save her. Everyone’s lives are ruined.

“It’s awful. I’m sorry to put you through this. I saw something on her phone about sex and everything else and freaked out.

“There is no suspect. I am the guilty one. There’s nothing worth this.”

Despite his confession, Mooney initially pleaded guilty to manslaughter, until a chilling audio recording of Anna being repeatedly stabbed was discovered by investigators.

The 90-minute video, which didn’t capture the actual murder, showed Mooney drinking three glasses of water and cleaning his blood-stained hands after his wicked act with a hunting knife.

A post-mortem examination later confirmed that Anna’s stab wound to the chest had pierced her heart, diaphragm and abdominal cavity. She also suffered knife wounds to her back and upper arm as well as slash wounds to her hand and arm.

Mooney and Anna tied the knot in 2005, a year after they relocated to Ireland from Ukraine, and they had two children together.

During court hearings earlier this year, Detective Sergeant Basil Grimes confirmed that Anna had been involved with a man in Germany.

Addressing the Central Criminal Court, Mooney extended an apology to the victim’s family.

He expressed: “I am truly sorry for what happened that night. It is the burden I go to bed with every night and wake up with every day.”

Mooney, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by Mr Justice Paul McDermott, expressed: “I wish to apologise to my kids for the terrible suffering I have caused everybody. I hope one day everybody will be able to forgive me.”
