Love is in the air on Netflix. As the season changes to fall, it’s time to stay inside and watch a rom-com. One of the most famous rom-coms of the last 20 years, The Notebook, is now streaming on Netflix. If you don’t feel like watching The Notebook for the hundredth time, stream one of the service’s original rom-coms, including Hit Man, A Family Affair, and Mother of the Bride.

The rom-coms don’t stop there. Netflix has an entire section dedicated to romance, which includes several subgenres — rom-com, emotional, holiday, adventure, and family. Nobody Wants This (2024)

Nine times out of 10, this article will only include movies. This is the rare exception that a TV show deserves a spot in this guide. Millennials, this is our time. Kristen Bell, aka the title character in Veronica Mars, and Adam Brody, aka Seth Cohen in The O.C., join forces for a television show that satisfies your rom-com wishes.

Joanne (Bell) is an agnostic woman who hosts a dating and sex podcast with her sister (Justine Lupe). Noah (Brody) is a progressive rabbi who recently ended his relationship with his Jewish girlfriend. Joanne and Noah meet at a dinner party and spark a connection. Bell and Brody are so good together that you’ll look past several familiar rom-com tropes. Everybody wants this show.

Jersey Girl (2004)

In 2004, Kevin Smith wrote and directed his first movie outside of his View Askewniverse. Jersey Girl is a sweet romantic dramedy about a father’s relationship with his young daughter. Ollie Trinke (Ben Affleck) is a widowed father who lost his wife after she gave birth to his daughter, Gertie (Raquel Castro). A depressed Ollie buries himself in his work, but soon loses his job as a public relations expert.

Years later, Ollie lives in New Jersey with Gertie, who is now in elementary school, and his father (George Carlin). After a successful presentation, Ollie is inspired to seek a PR job in New York City. Is Ollie willing to sacrifice his new life to recapture his past? If Gigli hadn’t tanked Affleck’s reputation, Jersey Girl would have been viewed more positively. Give it another chance.

Two Weeks Notice (2002)

Putting Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant in a rom-com is a cheat code. The two stars are experts in the genre, so naturally, their chemistry is on point in Two Weeks Notice. Lucy Kelson (Bullock) is a progressive environmental lawyer who fights for all the underdogs. She’s compassionate, caring, and thoughtful. On the other end of the spectrum is George Wade (Grant), a billionaire real estate mogul and womanizer.

Lucy meets George while working to protect a community center. Impressed by her résumé, George offers to hire Lucy as his new legal counsel. Lucy reluctantly takes the job, believing his money can help save the center. She soon realizes that George needs help in all aspects of his life and gives her two weeks’ notice. Yet, this relationship has a spark that might be worth saving.

A Texas Attorney General is suing TikTok. The viral short video platform has allegedly violated a recently enacted child privacy law in the state.

Texas is suing TikTok because its existing parental control features are ‘insufficient’

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against TikTok. Paxton, and by extension the state of Texas, has alleged TikTok’s existing parental control features are insufficient.

Specifically speaking, TikTok doesn’t have adequate alert and control mechanisms to monitor or limit a minor using the platform, alleged Paxton,

“However, Defendants do not provide the parents or guardians of users known to be 13 to 17 years old with parental tools that allow them to control or limit most of a known minor’s privacy and account settings.”

Consequentially, this could potentially permit TikTok to harvest data of minors without the guardian’s knowledge, the lawsuit stated:

“For example, parents or guardians cannot control Defendants’ sharing, disclosing, and selling of a known minor’s personal identifying information, nor control Defendants’ ability to display targeted advertising to a known minor.”

Teens can deny their parents rights to monitor and control them on TikTok?

The lawsuit further claims that TikTok’s “Family Pairing” tool isn’t “commercially reasonable”. Texas seems to have an issue with the way TikTok has set up account creation and management platforms.

Specifically speaking, parents who wish to monitor and control their children’s accounts, must first have their own TikTok account. However, what’s even more concerning is that teens can easily deny their parents’ requests to set up the monitoring tool. In other words, parents must seek their minor’s permission via the app to monitor or manage their app usage.

TikTok has refuted these allegations. The platform doesn’t allow ads targeting users younger than 18. “We strongly disagree with these allegations and we offer robust safeguards for teens and parents, including family pairing, all of which are publicly available. We stand by the protections we provide families,” the ByteDance-owned social media platform stated.

Incidentally, TikTok is the first tech company to be dragged to court under the new child privacy law in the state. Parts of the law have been struck down by a federal judge, but the law is still in effect. It essentially mandates social media platforms to verify the ages of younger users and offer parental control features. Texas is reportedly suing TikTok over these prerequisites, claiming they are insufficient.

Meta has spent the last few years saying that “young adults” are crucial to the future of Facebook. Now, the company is a number of changes to its 20-year-old social network in an effort to get younger users to spend more time in the app.

The updates include a new “local” section in the Facebook app that aims to surface information relevant to your local community, a renewed focus on events planned on the service and a new “Communities” feature for Messenger. The changes, Meta claims, will help young adults “explore their interests and connect with the world beyond their close friends.”

Emphasizing events isn’t an entirely new strategy for the company. It launched a standalone events app and then a year later to focus on “local” businesses and happenings. It the app in 2021.

Meta is taking a slightly different approach this time. The new “local” section will surface Marketplace listings, Reels and posts from Facebook groups alongside event listings from your community. Local news, which Meta has also , is notably absent Meta’s announcement.

In addition to the local tab, the company is also trying to make events more prominent in Facebook. Facebook will now provide personalized event recommendations in the form of a weekly and weekend digest that will be pushed to users via in-app notifications. The company is also changing how invitations to Facebook events work so users can send invites to their connections on Instagram and via SMS and email.

Groups on Facebook, which Meta has said is among the most-used features by young adults, is also getting attention in this update. Meta is experimenting with a “a customizable Group AI” that allows admins to create a bot that can chat with members to answer questions based on posts that have been shared in the group. Elsewhere in the app, Meta is starting to test an Instagram-like and a dedicated space for Reels inside of Facebook.

On Messenger, Meta is adding a new “Communities” feature, a concept it previously introduced . Communities allows “small to medium-sized” groups to organize their conversations and interact in a way that’s more like a Facebook group. Members can create topic-based chats and there are built in moderation and admin tools for controlling who can join.

The changes are part of a broader effort by Meta to bring younger people back to its app with features tailored around how they use social media. “Facebook is still for everyone, but in order to build for the next generation of social media consumers, we’ve made significant changes with young adults in mind,” the Facebook app’s head, Tom Alison, wrote .

Whether Meta’s latest efforts will be successful, though, is unclear. The company says there are more than 40 million young adults on Facebook in the US and Canada, a number that’s “the highest it’s been in more than 3 years.” But that’s still a relatively small percentage of its total users in the region and an even tinier slice of its users overall.
