Asus RS700-E6/RS4 Rackmount Server Unboxing and Assembly
FIRST HARDWARE FAILURE
On February 4 2011, Linux had reported that the third hard drive on the first server had failed.
The faulty hard drive was pulled out of the server, replaced with an identical sized drive from the same manufacturer (in this case Hitachi), and the RAID array was rebuilt (a 12 hour operation).
The server remained in operation during the entire crisis, and the channel’s live video stream was never interrupted.
Now because these servers use reasonably priced consumer hard drives instead of excessively priced enterprise grade hard drives, it’s entirely possible there might be nothing wrong with the supposedly “failed” drive at all, and that it had simply taken too long to correct an internal error before the Linux software RAID controller had given up trying to access the drive.
The hard drive will be tested to confirm that it is actually defective, and the results will be added to the show notes.
I’ll also see if I can get this drive replaced under warranty. While it was used in a RAID system, live video streaming is such an incredibly light storage task that the hard drive lights on the server only blink once every five to ten seconds. All of the real work is being performed by the processor, which is preoccupied with transcoding the video to a streamable format in real time. The workload subjected on these hard drives inside these servers is actually less than what you would normally see on a traditional desktop computer.
—————————————-
ONE YEAR UPDATE
There have been no hardware issues whatsoever, not even a single failed hard drive.
Both servers have been upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and have been operating under an average 50% CPU load. Hard drive usage was minimal as the servers are only used for broadcast purposes, with the hard drive data throughput so low that the drive lights only blink once every five seconds.
The only serious software issue encountered up to now involves a conflict between the server, the GNOME Desktop, VNC, and OpenVPN. If you attempt to reboot the computer via VNC on an OpenVPN connection, the server could refuse to reboot to the point where you’ll need to pull the power cable to unjam it. Even the ASMB4-iKVM remote support module wasn’t able to properly power cycle the server.
To avoid this problem, don’t use VNC during the reboot, and reboot the server via SSH.
(Note: the GNOME Desktop is required for certain applications)
—————————————-
CLARIFICATION
There has been some confusion on the Internet as to which components are included and which components are optional in the barebones package. What follows are the components that were already included in each server package.
– Four hard drive trays
– DVD-RW optical drive
– Heatsinks for both CPU sockets
– ASMB4-iKVM remote support module
– Main power supply
– Rackmount rails
Your configuration may vary.
Confirm the ABSENCE of each component BEFORE ordering them. I ordered an ASMB4-iKVM module without realizing it was already installed inside each server. Luckily, a new Asus server for the office supported the module, but in this case it wasn’t included in the package.
—————————————-
Unboxing and assembly of the Asus RS700-E6/RS4 rackmount server, including installation of Ubuntu 9.04 Server 64 Bits.
This is not an official review. Neither should it be considered as a HowTo video. It’s just my experience in setting up the two rackmount servers that will most likely be critical in the success of my cable television channel.

None of this is written in stone. If conventional television is to survive in today’s rapidly evolving world, it has to adapt. Not once, but constantly.
We intend to do that. Proactively. Not reactively as the movie and television industry has been doing for decades.

Sturdy for basic use
I was worried about this rack being able to support the weight of a NAS, UPS, switch, and other equipment. I used heavy lag bolts directly into the studs as well as plywood backer with a few additional bolts ran through it and so far it seems to be holding up well. I specifically selected equipment that was not too heavy, going back and adjusting my requirements several times. What I like about this rack is that when doing my punchdowns and cabling there is enough room (even in a tiny space) to get behind and stand inside of it. I had a very narrow area to work in and feel that this rack is doing well in that space. I would recommend it for basic use in a home or small office, or anywhere with a confined area. Attached are a couple pictures.

@TheCanadianPublic
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
@chad9137 Do NOT get a rackmount server for gaming! There's absolutely no room inside for a decent graphics card!
@skyler5230
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
What about for running servers I don't have a graphics card in my desktop that i run servers on. So a rackmount server would be great for running servers right?
@TheCanadianPublic
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
Yes, it would, but the rackmount form factor isn't designed specifically for server processes. Its purpose is to maximize rack space usage in places where you're charged for the amount of space you occupy inside a component rack, such as for example at a secure datacenter. A single rack unit in one of those places (i.e. 1U) can easily cost you around $50 per month!
I even have rackmount servers that aren't used as servers at all. They're desktop style PCs squeezed into 1U of space.

@TheCanadianPublic
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
You don't need an actual server unless the game software requires it. At most, you might need to give the machine a fixed IP address so the router can find it.
All routers should have some kind of port forwarding capability built into them. It's just a matter of knowing which port to forward. The game software should have this info for you.
Now do your homework! 🙂
@BlueDragon022
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
you don't need a server all you need is a computer with lots of ram and a good cpu
@gbradford22
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
Can you explain the raid 0, raid 1 and raid 5 configuration and how you calculated the amount of drivespace used for each?
@TheCanadianPublic
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
Raid 0: Individual drives linked together to create one big drive. 4 1TB drives = 4TB of space. But if a drive fails, you lose everything!
Raid 1: Contents of one drive reproduced on multiple drives. 4 1TB drives = 1TB of space. If a drive fails, the other drives take over.
Raid 5: Similar to Raid 0, but one drive works as a "parity" drive. 4 1TB drives = 3TB of space. If a drive fails, the parity drive is used to "rebuild the array" and load the data from the lost drive onto a new drive.
@gbradford22
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
From your video looks like you did three different types of Raid partitions on each individual drive?1 GB for boot (Raid 1), 20 GB for swap (Raid 0) and 975 GB (Raid 5) for everything else?
How did you decide on those amounts and why three different types of Raid on each drive? The video doesn't show the Ubuntu partition steps.
I was able to do a Raid 5 on four drives by using the auto partition feature in Ubuntu which created two partitions on each drive both partitioned as Raid 5. Is this Ok?
@TheCanadianPublic
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
I believe the swap was changed from Raid 0 to Raid 1 when I realized virtual memory could become corrupted if I had lost a drive.
I wasn't sure how the software Linux RAID would behave at boot. Setting the boot partition to Raid 1 ensures that no matter what happens, I can always boot the system and load the RAID daemon from any of the drives.
How big is each RAID partition? It sounds as if one of them is the swap. Linux HAS to create the swap as a separate partition.
@TheCanadianPublic

@talkoverip
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
If the Asus RS700 about a quarter of the HP servers' price with the same specifications, then we may use it for the cheap server. Other than that, it is no way to compare with the Dell or HP server. Asus RS700 is makde with the cheap materials as we seen.
@TheCanadianPublic
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
And yet, aside from the loss of two 1TB Hitachi hard drives (lost the second one this week), the only component to have failed in the last three years in either server was one hot swappable chassis fan…
…Out of seven…
…In one server only.
It doesn't even count as a proper failure since the problem is simply a pinched wire that can easily be fixed. All the broken wire did was run the fan at full speed. I didn't even notice it until I moved the servers to a more quiet location.
@Youritlam
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
Can it run any os?
@TheCanadianPublic
October 6, 2024 at 11:36 am
Pretty much. It even came with driver discs for Windows although you may have issues if you want to use Windows Server 2008 drivers under Windows 7 and vice versa. But since these computers use very generic components, you might not even need to install extra drivers unless you need hardware RAID support.
Linux isn't an issue. The drivers are fine, and the software RAID support works almost flawlessly. It will stop at the BusyBox prompt during reboot if there's a failed drive in the array.

A server is essentially a very flat PC containing more robust (and pricy) components. You can get away with using a cheap desktop. You only need these type of servers if you need a lot of them and want to save space.

Hello all, I had an Asus server motherboard, the unit is still under warranty until April, 2021. I sent it to Asus for repair. They could not repair and blamed to the product was damaged. This is a true story. Do not buy Asus products. If it works then you don't have to worry. If it fails, you have hard time to send back for repair. This is not the first time. Last year I bought the Asus B250i motherboard. It failed a few months later. I had to send it back the second time for a replacement.
This is not what I am angry with Asus, it is a true story.
