Bar BANS solo drinkers as owner says 'you're not coming in'

“Unless you’re with a group and we know who you’re with, then you’re not coming in”

A Greater Manchester cocktail and karaoke bar has defended it’s policy to ban solo drinkers at night in a video posted on social media.

In an Instagram post titled: “Door policy drama”, founder and owner of Alibi Altrincham Carl Peters explained why customers are denied entry after 9pm, unless visiting as part of a group.

The bar, on Shaw’s Road near Altrincham Market, opened in 2022 and offers a variety of late-night cocktails and themed karaoke events.

In the clip on the venue’s social media platform, owner Carl explained the reasoning behind their solo no entry policy, which is in place ‘for the safety of guests’.

“Here’s the latest instalment of stupid things that happen at Alibi that people do that you love to hear about on social media,” he said.

“1.30am, I am literally getting ready to go and a guy comes up to the door, pointing at the sign that we have outside the front door, which says we don’t let single entry people in.

“A.K.A, if you’re on your own, we don’t let people in.”

The clip shows an image of the bar’s entrance policy sign, which reads: “No single entry. After 9pm, Alibi does not permit single entry. If you are with guests already inside the venue, please contact them in advance of entry. This is for the safety of all guests.”

It also states a dress code, informing customers not to wear sportswear or tracksuits, Stone Island branded clothing, ripped or frayed jeans or have ‘roadman vibes’.

Explaining the reason for the policy, Carl clarified it is to prevent groups being ‘mithered’ by solo-drinkers and to protect them from a ‘nightmare’ should ‘something happen to them’.

“Firstly, if someone is on their own, it means that they’re not with someone else,” he says. “So if something happens to them in a late night, busy bar environment, where people are drinking, it’s an absolute nightmare for us to deal with.

“It also happens to be the case that sometimes if you let people in on their own, there reason why they’re on their own is that they’ve got no-one to talk to, so they start mithering other groups.

“Because, they’re not just gonna sit there in a bar having a drink on their own in silence. That’s when things start to happen and people are like ‘who’s this person on their own annoying us?’.

“So, what we do as a venue, is we just eliminate that. Unless you’re with a group and we know who you’re with, then you’re not coming in.”

After then citing an example where a hopeful customer described the policy as ‘discrimination’ and a disagreement about ‘being woke’, Carl says: “Sorry mate, you’re very easily offended. Are you single? Do you mean it’s because you’re single? Is that what you think this is saying?

“I realised this geezer was a bit of a gammon. And I said, ‘sorry mate, don’t bring your woke agenda here’, knowing that that would be the thing that would annoy him more than anything else that I could possibly say.

“There’s many reasons why our society is crumbling. I can’t help but feel that people like him that think they are the fabric of our society are part of the reason for that.”
