Apple Intelligence to boost iPhone 16 series sales: Analysts

Apple announced its new iPhone 16 series smartphones last month. The devices have been on sale for a while now, but they come with one of their main selling points, AI. Apple Intelligence is coming this month, but not all of its promised features. Apple Intelligence is expected to boost sales of the new iPhones, however.

The fact that Apple Intelligence is not included from the get-go is very odd to see from Apple. The company usually bakes in everything from the get-go, we’re not used to seeing delayed features, especially ones as important as Apple Intelligence.

Well, truth be told, if you’re running a beta version of iOS 18 at the moment, you can use Apple Intelligence already. We are talking about a stable build, though, as that’s what the regular users are using.

With that being said, Apple reportedly cut the production of iPhone 16 models by three million units. The sales are not as great as Apple hoped they would be, it would seem.

Well, analysts from JP Morgan seem to think that there is “more muted momentum” in early orders. That is especially true when it comes to the two ‘Pro’ iPhones. They predict that the lack of excitement is “likely due to the unavailability of AI capabilities”.

Apple has been aggressively using the term ‘Apple Intelligence’ to promote the iPhone 16 series, and those features are not yet available. It’s still using that term, and it’s also heavily marketed on the company’s official website too.

There’s another problem, Apple Intelligence will be available only in English, at least at first. So many users from abroad don’t really have the incentive to upgrade to the latest iPhones, even though Apple Intelligence is coming.

What is interesting, however, is that JP Morgan analysts say that Apple Intelligence was the sixth reason for users to upgrade to the new models. It’s not even in the top 5. Overall speed of the phone and 5G are ranked above it, amongst several others.

In any case, analysts estimate that Apple will ship out 76 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of this year. That number is expected to reach 148 million units over the next four quarters.

The Franchise review: Sharp satire skewers superhero movies

The Franchise is about as inside baseball as it gets. The new HBO series from executive producers Jon Brown, Armando Iannucci (Veep), and Sam Mendes (1917) satirizes the soulless inner workings of a modern-day superhero movie set. Its episodes concern themselves with, among other things, the interchangeability of crossover cameos, morally questionable instances of product placement, and the death threats that overqualified actresses get these days whenever they decide to dip their toes into a sci-fi or comic book franchise. Will these issues be interesting to casual viewers? It’s impossible to say, but there’s no doubt that they are compelling to Brown and his collaborators.

The Franchise isn’t just darkly funny and quick-witted; it’s also well-researched. The problems that its fictional film crew faces while trying to bring the latest installment of a massive, Marvel Cinematic Universe-esque franchise past the finish line aren’t just believable most of the time but often feel ripped straight from past trade headlines. This gives The Franchise a chance to tap into the very real contemporary frustrations of Hollywood crew members and reveal the dangers of an entertainment industry that cares more about brand management and corporate synergy than quality or creativity.

The Franchise does so, of course, while also lampooning the absurdity of the trends that have brought Hollywood to such a disconcerting place to begin with. The series is a satire with a very clear, obvious point — one that it hits repeatedly over the course of its eight episodes — but its genuine concerns about the future of its industry don’t stop it from having a helluva fun time. “Rome’s getting hot these days,” one crew member says to another in a midseason episode. It’s to The Franchise‘s credit that it always feels like it is simultaneously trying to put out the fires and dance amidst the wreckage.

At the center of The Franchise is Daniel (Himesh Patel), the beleaguered First Assistant Director of Tecto: Eye of the Storm, a new spinoff in an extremely MCU-coded superhero franchise. Daniel’s days are spent not only overseeing Tecto‘s set but also managing the egos of its director, Eric (Daniel Brühl), and its two stars, an arrogant British thespian who is literally begging to be canceled (Richard E. Grant) and an insecure wannabe movie star (Billy Magnussen) who believes he is on the “cusp” of finally becoming a member of Hollywood’s A-list. When Pat (Darren Goldstein), one of the brutish heads of Tecto‘s parent studio, arrives unannounced on set one day, he brings with him a new, pressurized status quo, as well as Anita (The Boys star Aya Cash), an ambitious up-and-coming producer who used to date Daniel.

The Franchise‘s eight episodes follow Daniel and the other members of Tecto‘s crew as they painfully make their way through the film’s 117-day shoot. Various absurd problems inevitably arise. Eric is repeatedly steamrolled by Pat and the director of a nearby, bigger sister production, while the last-minute cancellation of another film results at one point in Pat demanding that Anita solve their studio’s “woman problem.” Her solution ends up involving a magical stick from comic book lore and Tecto‘s sole female character, a purple-skinned phantom played by Quinn (Katherine Waterston), an Academy Award-nominated actress who can’t wait to get as far away from Tecto and its rabid base of misogynistic fans as she can.

The Franchise tackles all of its corporate-driven issues with a straight enough face and dry enough wit to effectively emphasize just how ridiculous and soul-killing the day-by-day goings-on of a contemporary franchise production have become. The series does, however, falter a bit in its actual depiction of Tecto and its fellow superhero films. The Franchise and its makers have such a clear contempt for the superhero genre as a whole that the show’s more pointed critiques of the current Hollywood studio system are sometimes undercut by how unbelievably bad its central fictional studio’s movies are made out to be. While The Franchise rarely ever drifts too far away from its core ideas, a few of its midseason episodes, including one chronicling a night shoot that is sent into chaos by an impending visit from Christopher Nolan, feel less focused and exacting than the rest.

The show’s missteps are largely offset by the performances given by its cast. Cash and Patel capably emerge as The Franchise‘s de facto leads and effortlessly conform to its rapid-fire pace and acidic sense of humor. Magnussen and Grant’s characters never really develop beyond their one-note archetypes, but the two actors nonetheless prove to be reliable sources of comedy as well. The same is largely true of British TV vets Jessica Hynes and Lolly Adefope, who play Eric and Daniel’s right-hand assistants, respectively, though The Franchise struggles to consistently justify their characters’ roles in the show.

Ultimately, no one stands out more in The Franchise‘s cast than Daniel Brühl. The actor, who has some experience working in the superhero genre, is a comedic revelation as Eric, an egotistical filmmaker who fancies himself an auteur and yet lacks the spine to do anything more than throw the occasional temper tantrum in order to protect his “vision.” The Franchise is, frankly, worth seeking out just to see how Brühl takes lines like, “I really do want to say something about fracking!” and manages to make the absolute most out of them. In the actor’s capable hands, Eric transforms into both a ridiculous send-up of a visionary artist and a sympathetic portrait of a man who doesn’t yet realize that his ideas don’t actually matter at all to his employers.

It’s this line between parody and real pain that The Franchise manages to ride exceptionally well across its first season and what may make it more accessible to viewers who aren’t as in-the-know as the Hollywood insiders who made it. For those who are, The Franchise may not come just as a welcome laugh, a traumatizing reminder of past experiences, or a much-needed wake-up call, but all of the above. It’s a TV series that scorches just about everything it puts in its wake, and it’s both a good and bad thing that it still feels by the end of its first eight episodes like it has only barely scratched the surface of Hollywood’s current problems.

The Franchise premieres Sunday, October 6 on HBO. New episodes air weekly on Sundays. Digital Trends was given early access to the series’ entire eight-episode first season.

iPhone 17 Air to feature new OLED screens made by Novatek

iPhone users are facing a sudden drop in battery life after iOS 18 update

Apple could be sourcing a new type of OLED display for its iPhone 17, and presumably the rumored iPhone 17 Air. Coincidentally, a Taiwanese company called Novatek has confirmed it will begin mass-producing a new OLED display next year.

Is Apple going to source OLED displays from Novatek?

Apple unveiled the iPhone 16 series recently. The company started shipping the latest iPhones to the early buyers late last month. However, this hasn’t stopped the rumors about the iPhone 17 series from surfacing.

A recent rumor claimed that the iPhone 17 and the slimmer model, presumably called iPhone 17 Slim or iPhone 17 Pro, will have 120Hz displays. Now, a Taiwanese company called Novatek has announced it will ramp up production of a new OLED display next year, which would be ideal for the upcoming iPhone 17 models.

According to DigiTimes, Novatek has announced plans to commence mass production of its highly anticipated OLED TDDI technology as early as the second quarter of 2025. Novatek is one of Taiwan’s leading display driver IC (DDI) manufacturers.

It is important to note that neither Apple nor Novatek have confirmed the latter’s display will be on next year’s iPhone model. However, the timing of Novatek’s scheduled production roadmap and the expected launch of the iPhone 17 Air in the fall of 2025 might not be a mere coincidence.

iPhone 17 Air will have a new, thinner OLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate

Previous reports have suggested the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will finally get a 120Hz refresh rate ProMotion technology. This would be a big leap in display tech compared to the current generation iPhone 16.

The latest iPhone 16 and 16 Plus feature displays that support only a 60Hz refresh rate. To support the higher refresh rate and still maintain a slim profile, the iPhone 17 Air devices would need new display tech.

Novatek has confirmed it will mass-produce displays with its highly anticipated OLED TDDI technology. A big advantage of embedding an OLED TDDI display is that it allows thinner screens. Needless to say, this could be the ideal screen technology for the rumored iPhone 17 Air.

It seems Apple has a slew of hardware announcements in store for us this fall. In the Power On newsletter this week, ’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is gearing up to announce new MacBook Pro models, the , the M4 iMac and a new iPad mini before the end of the month, and is targeting a release date of November 1 for “at least some” of these products.

According to Gurman, we’re likely to see a low- and high-end 14-inch MacBook Pro, both packing the M4 chips. There will also be a 16-inch high-end MacBook Pro. As for the Mac mini, reported that the upcoming compared to its predecessors, with a build roughly the size of an Apple TV box. The size reduction may also mean it . Following the fall releases, Gurman predicts Apple will have a bunch of other products ready for early 2025, including a 13-inch and 15-inch M4 MacBook Air, along with a refreshed iPhone SE and iPad Air in both sizes.

Trailers of the week: Nosferatu, The Franchise, and Squid Game 2

Can you feel it? There’s a slight chill in the air, the Sun is retiring earlier, and the leaves are beginning to change (at least in my Midwestern city). We’re wading right into the time of year when everyone starts posting the vampire Kermit the Frog meme to show how ready they are for Halloween. I’m even starting to eye that Shudder re-subscribe button.

October has its own vibe at the cinema, and theatrical releases this month include Operation Blood Hunt, a movie about 1944 special forces fighting werewolves in the Pacific theater, and Seven Cemeteries, a Danny Trejo-starring film about a guy who hires a witch to resurrect his posse to save a woman’s ranch. And let’s not forget Rumours, which I’m very excited for.

So I’ve got a couple of this week’s scary movie trailers for you to check out below, along with two streaming series. Enjoy!

1922’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror was a Dracula movie in all but name. So much so that Bram Stoker’s heirs got a court order to have the movie’s copies destroyed, yet some copies survived. Now, over 100 years after its release, Nosferatu is getting a remake starring Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Count Orlok, AKA Nosferatu. Lily Rose-Depp and Willem Dafoe also star.

The newest trailer does a great job setting up the atmosphere of terror that the townsfolk feel toward Count Orlok, but Focus Features isn’t showing us Orlok himself quite yet. Nosferatu hits theaters on December 25th.

Companion

I don’t know what the heck is going on with Warner Bros.’ Companion. The teaser for this Drew Hancock-directed movie starts with a head fake, making you think it’s a love story. Then it quickly devolves into what looks like a thriller about a woman (Sophie Thatcher) being held captive by a man (Jack Quaid).

I think that’s a head fake, too. There’s a bizarre moment, at the end of the trailer, where Thatcher’s character holds an unshaking hand over a candle until her arm catches fire. She’s crying, so she clearly feels pain, but the movie’s classification — it’s a sci-fi thriller — makes me wonder what’s going on underneath.

I hoped that by texting the number in the description on the trailer’s YouTube page I would glean a little more. It involves a questionnaire to “Find Your Companion today” that includes a request for a selfie. I got this at the end:

That didn’t answer any questions for me, but at least I’ll be getting marketing texts now. Anyway, Companion hits theaters on January 10th next year.

Three years after the first hit season of Squid Game ended and spawned a reality show spinoff, the Netflix show is returning with its second season on December 26th. A new teaser this week showed Gong Yoo’s Salesman preparing for work (and probably to do some slapping). It ends with him talking directly to the camera as he asks “Sir, would you like to play a game with me?”

The Franchise, HBO’s new series following the making of a fictional comic book-style movie, looks like a delightful takedown of Hollywood’s ongoing superhero obsession. It’s written by Jon Brown, who also wrote Succession, and stars Himesh Patel and Lolly Adefope as Daniel and Dag, two production workers on the film. Daniel Brühl is in there too — a bit of fun casting, given his role as Zemo in multiple Marvel productions. The Franchise begins streaming tonight at 10PM ET on Max.
