One of the most immersive and downright impressive experiences on the Apple Vision Pro is watching content. Whether the content is optimized for the $3,500 spatial computer or not, the appeal is that almost anything can be a showstopper.
I’ve been transported to London’s Hyde Park for a Springsteen show on a 100-inch screen, in which I can choose the vantage point I like or even rewatch some Spongebob with the famed creature beside me, thanks to a custom environment. Some of the most impressive, though, are the ones produced just for the headset – up until now, though, it’s been unscripted adventures like getting up close with wild animals or walking a highwire high above the clouds.
However, that’s changing this week – Apple’s first scripted film captured in the Apple Immersive Video, Submerged, is arriving on Thursday, October 10, 2024. It’ll be free for anyone with the Vision Pro and available to watch within the TV app on the device. While there is no shared runtime, it is dubbed as a short film.
Edward Berger, an academy-award-winning filmmaker, directed and wrote Submerged. He previously worked on All Quiet on the Western Front, and another film he worked on, Conclave, is due out soon.

While we didn’t get a formal trailer, Apple released a video showing some shots from the film, depicting unique camera angles and Berger wearing the Vision Pro while on set. Also seen is the special camera capable of shooting in the Apple Immersive Video format. It’s safe to say it should offer those with the Vision Pro a unique view that swaps you from just watching a film to being part of the story.
The film itself will transport viewers onto a submarine during WWII as it’s in the midst of an attack from torpedos – Apple’s full synopsis is: “Submerged invites viewers onto a WWII-era submarine and follows its crew as they wrestle to combat a harrowing torpedo attack. This adrenaline-pumping thrill ride showcases the unique storytelling experiences made possible by Apple Immersive Video, a remarkable media format that leverages ultra-high resolution 3D video and Spatial Audio to put viewers in the center of the action.”

Submerged is out on October 10, 2024, and is free for Vision Pro owners. It will also continue to expand the Immersive Video content available on the platform. That’s a good thing, and it marks the first jump towards scripted content, with hopefully more to come.

I’ll give it a watch once it drops, but I also think Apple’s Vision Pro works well with a regular movie or TV show. I’m excited to spin the upcoming Springsteen documentary – Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band – via Disney+. I hope that Netflix eventually joins the bandwagon to watch Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts concert film later in October. The device excels this way thanks to the excellent displays and great Spatial Audio – when supported – via AirPods Pro.
To remain ahead of their peers – or at least to remain competitive – most companies these days are rushing to innovate different technologies.
However this can put them at risk of cyberattacks, a new report from BlackBerry has warned. Based on a global survey of 1,000 embedded software developers and engineers, the report found the majority of UK respondents (77%) admitted to compromising on critical safety aspects in order to meet pressing deadlines. Furthermore, if they are not pressed with deadlines, they are with funding.
Also, while three-quarters (74%) of respondents in the UK consider security either a “top”, or “high” priority in their software and applications, they aren’t diligent when it comes to patching. The average time between two updates is five weeks, BlackBerry said, adding that this frequency varies significantly.
OS woes
Another important aspect while building new technologies is the underlying operating system. Some respondents (28%) said that they weren’t confident their OS of choice had the necessary safety certifications. What’s more, 14% “firmly believe” their OS lacks these features, and another 14% said their OS was only partially compliant.

OS plays a major role in project timelines, the report stressed, saying 29% of organizations in the UK missed their deadlines due to time spent developing, certifying, and testing the OS. Using open source solutions doesn’t help much, since open source is more likely to experience a breach, compared to proprietary software (52% versus 31%).
For João Pereira, Director, EMEA General Embedded Market Sales at BlackBerry QNX, the solution is in pre-certified software: “As we enter the era of ‘Software-Defined Everything,’ where devices and infrastructure increasingly rely on software for operations, new features, and innovation, the importance of functional (FuSa) safety is paramount. While 91% of UK organizations surveyed recognize this as a priority, it’s clear developers are under growing pressure to meet deadlines and budgets, which is why pre-certified software is so important to enabling organizations not only meet their goals, but doing so without compromise.”

If you want to ensure your graphics card runs as fast as possible with all the latest features, it’s important to install the latest GPU drivers. Graphics drivers optimize new games and fix bugs, and staying up to date with them can squeeze extra performance out of your card. In this guide, we have a simple two-step process for how to install and upgrade your GPU drivers in Windows 10.
Before you can install or upgrade your GPU drivers, you need to know your GPU model. If you built your own computer or otherwise know what graphics card you have, you can skip down to the steps below. If you don’t know what card you have, don’t worry. it’s easy to find out which GPU you have.
Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming
Press Windows Key + S and enter System Information. Select the top result to pull up a window with everything you need to know about your computer. In the left menu, expand the Components option and select Display. The main window will refresh with some information about your display and graphics card. You can find your graphics card model under the Name item.
You can also find your GPU driver version in this window if you want to manually check if you have the right version. You don’t need to, though. AMD and Nvidia offer software that can automatically detect if your driver is out of date.
Nvidia and AMD have graphics driver software that can auto-detect your card and notify you of the latest updates. As far as these types of applications go, they’re unobtrusive, so we recommend installing them so you can easily upgrade your GPU drivers in the future.
Nvidia GeForce Experience

Nvidia’s graphics card drivers come from GeForce Experience, which also includes game capture through ShadowPlay and automatic game optimizations in supported titles. Download GeForce Experience from Nvidia’s website and follow the steps in the installer. Once it’s done, GeForce Experience will automatically open and attempt to detect the games installed on your PC.
If you don’t want GeForce Experience, you can update your graphics driver manually. You can use Nvidia’s product search page to find your graphics card. The search function speaks for itself, but make sure Download Type is set to Game Ready Driver (GRD) and Operating System is set to Windows 10. Otherwise, you just need to know your product series and the card you have (see above).
Run the installer for the latest driver, and you’re all set. During the installation, Nvidia will ask if you want to install GeForce Experience, but you can install the driver by itself if you want.
AMD Radeon Software

AMD’s drivers come from Radeon Software, which includes a bunch of useful features for AMD graphics cards. In addition to updating your driver, the software lets you monitor temperature and performance inside your computer, set up a livestream scene, and use features like Radeon Chill and Radeon Anti-Lag. Download the latest version of Radeon Software from AMD and follow the steps in the installer.
Alternatively, you can find your card manually, but you’ll need to still install the driver through Radeon Software. You can search for your card using AMD’s product search tool, which is easier to use than Nvidia’s. Just make sure to select Graphics as your category, then select the product series and the card you have.

On the next screen, expand the Windows 10 – 64-bit Edition dropdown to reveal the available drivers. Under the Revision Number, look for the driver with the Recommended tag. You’ll also see an option for an Optional driver, which includes upcoming features but may carry bugs or other issues. Click Download, follow the installer, and you’re good to go.
With the software installed, you can easily update your GPU driver. You don’t need to know what graphics card you have or what driver it needs. Both pieces of software will automatically detect your system and recommend the most recent driver.
Nvidia GeForce Experience

Open up GeForce Experience after it’s done installing and head to the Drivers tab. You should see the most recent driver available, which you can download. Just to make sure you’re getting what you need, though, click the three dots in the upper right corner and select Game Ready Driver, then select Check for Updates. Nvidia also offers studio drivers that are optimized for creative apps. You can have one or the other, not both. For most people, we recommend the Game Ready Driver.
After you’ve checked for updates, click the big green Download button. Installation only takes a few minutes, during which your screen will temporarily go black and your sound will cut out. Both will come back after the installation is done. When it’s finished, restart your computer and you’re all set.
Whenever there’s a new update, you’ll be able to see it by opening GeForce Experience from the taskbar.

AMD Radeon Software

AMD’s Radeon Software has a lot more going on, but it’s still easy to find the drivers you need. Even better, Radeon Software allows you to automatically install new updates, so you should only have to go through the process manually once.
Open the software and click the Settings icon in the right corner. Ensure you’re on the System tab on the next page and look under the Software & Driver section. Select Check for Updates to see if there’s a new driver available. If you’re installing a driver for the first time, Radeon Software will automatically detect your card and download the latest driver during the installation process.
Below this area, you can set up automatic installs. First, toggle the switch next to the Check for Updates section, which will automatically check for new driver versions. This option is enabled by default. Below that, you can toggle on Download Drivers & Software, which will install the latest driver and software versions automatically. Finally, make sure Preferred Software Version is set to Recommended.
As you will have noticed, this guide is aimed at Nvidia and AMD graphics card users. If you have integrated graphics from Intel, you can find the most recent graphics drivers on Intel’s software download page.

The OnePlus Open is on sale for Amazon’s Prime Day today, where you can grab this foldable for just $1,199. This marks a fresh all-time low for the OnePlus Open, not to mention a really attractive price.
When OnePlus debuted the Open Apex edition a few months ago, the Open received a permanent price drop to $1,299. Now, for Prime Day it’s $100 cheaper. Making this cheaper than the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which is insanity.
Despite all of the other foldable devices that have launched this year, I still go back to the OnePlus Open. Why? It really comes down to three things. The camera, software and battery life. The camera on the OnePlus Open is still one of the best on a smartphone, not just foldables. Then there’s the battery life. It lasts a full day of heavy usage, even a year after it launched. That’s something that can’t be said about a lot of other foldable devices on the market today, especially the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Then there’s the software. Still my favorite implementation of foldable software. Open Canvas, which debuted on the OnePlus Open basically lets you have more screen real estate than you actually have. You can have apps side-by-side, with up to three apps on the screen at a time, and even pushing apps off of the screen. Not to mention pop-up windows and picture-in-picture for video. It’s really the best multi-tasking foldable on the market.
