Rackmount Air Conditioning?!?!?!? IT'S A THING!

How do you keep servers cool without building a dedicated cold room? You cool the rack! Today, I’ll be installing the Tripp Lite SRCOOL7KRM into my home server rack, and pushing all of the heat generated by the rack out of the house. Why cool down my 900 SQFT, uninsulated garage when I can cool just the rack itself?

A massive shoutout to Tripp Lite for sending over the SRCOOL7KRM and ducting kit to make this project possible.

If you don't mind sharing, where did you buy your vinyl for the front of the rack?

The design of the SRCOOL7KRM seems insane to me – there's only one intake both for air-to-be-cooled, and air-to-be-exhausted, from what I can see. That results in a huge amount of waste, since you can't recirculate cool air on one side of the cooler, while having a separate air path for the hot side of the AC. It's like portable ACs that cool themselves with the room's cool air instead of having a separate intake/exhaust – ridiculously inefficient.

A design with separate paths for the hot side and the cold side of the air conditioner would also prevent you from needing to do all that ducting from the rears of the servers – all of the heat rejected from the entire rack would come out of the single air conditioner exhaust.

    Pretty awesome video..
Probably you could got away without the higher speed fan if you put two separate holes out one for the ac and another for the server exhaust instead of combining both into one hole out. But I can understand that making two holes out of the garage doesn't sound like a pleasant idea.

If you went with a Wye instead of a Tee you wouldn't have the air flowing down also where does the water drain to from the AC unit?

I would have had the heat dumped into my heating ducts 🤔
Like, I use my crypto mining to help heat my house, so yeah lel

Why not just get a mini-split unit installed in the garage?

500w at idle? my 1 server alone draws 200w at idle, with9x3.5 and 6×2.5 hdd´s hmmmmm

It's a proper amount of energy you waisting.

Read the Amazon reviews and you will find that these Tripp Lite AC's are not so reliable.

    Hey Jeff

    Next build
Whenever toy have an excuse to get another rack.

    Go with a sysrack.
They have fans on the top. I can see it much easier to shroud the fans off and reduce into flex round.

    Regardless good shit

    Edit : whenever you *

You can't compare heat wattage to consumptiuon wattage. They are both measurements of energy, yes, but not the same thing.

As an HVAC guy by day and budding homelab/gamer guy by night/weekend, you do better HVAC ducting working than most helpers I had in my residential days.

  20. @christianstark1055

    October 8, 2024 at 6:57 am

Cool solution. I would suggest changing the "T" at the top to a "Y" style duct. The inline fan will then create a venturi effect on the vent from the AC. I think you will get better flow through the AC.

  21. @libertine5606

    October 8, 2024 at 6:57 am

I am not sure if your system will work. What you would want is for the condenser to have a external/closed system that would loop around the radiator. Pulled from the external air and pushed back out after taking out the heat. And the internal air to pass over the cooler and keep recirculating. Pulling "hot" air from the top has to be replaced by external air defeating the purpose.

Hey quick question? What did you do about the drain plug? does it matter?

Wow I can't even stand this bullshit and finish the video. It's so dummy that my eyes blow off watching this. You put your duct in the server rack… OMG it should be out of it. I believe after 4 years you know why but … man take off this video from youtube.
