A brave pair managed to disarm him after a struggle.
A thug branded two innocent pals “gangsters” and attacked them with a knife handle in East Kilbride town centre.
But Hamilton Sheriff Court heard the brave pair managed to disarm Frank Lang after a struggle.
Lang, 38, appeared from custody and admitted charges of assault and threatening or abusive behaviour.
The court heard he was carrying a metal Stanley knife handle, but there was no blade attached.
The two victims were out for the evening on August 26. They were walking in Olympia Way around 7pm when Lang shouted towards them: “Where do you two gangsters think you are going? You want smashed?”
Lang appeared to be heavily under the influence. He tried several times without success to strike the first victim with the knife handle before chasing the other, shouting: “I’m going to carve you up.”
He hit the second victim on the abdomen, face and neck with the knife handle. The victim was “terrified” but he and his friend wrestled Lang to the ground and police officers arrived soon after.
Lang admitted previous convictions and his record includes a 16-month jail sentence.
Sentence was deferred until December 30 for a criminal justice social work report and he was remanded in custody.
