Nuno Espirito Santo Wants to Raid Wolves to Sign Jose Sa for West Ham
West Ham United boss Nuno Espirito Santo is ready to bring in a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window to aid their battle against the drop.
The Hammers have had a poor season so far, sitting in the relegation zone ahead of their clash with Manchester United on Thursday, after Leeds United’s surprise win over Chelsea on Wednesday night, with Graham Potter already sacked as manager and replaced.
But now, new boss Nuno is looking for ways to strengthen the squad to move away from a relegation battle in the new year, and he is ready to raid his former club Wolves to add more experience to a struggling side.
West Ham Want to Sign Jose Sa
Former manager Potter splashed the cash to strengthen the goalkeeper department in the summer, signing Mads Hermansen from Leicester City in a deal worth in excess of £20m.
But the Dane has quickly lost his place in the starting lineup to Alphonse Areola, but the Frenchman has not been able to help arrest their poor form, and the Hammers have won just twice in their nine games since Areola came into the side.
Now, according to Football Insider, the east London club are eyeing a potential move to sign Portuguese international Jose Sa from relegation strugglers Wolves.
Sa, who earns £75,000-a-week at Molineux, has recently lost his place in the starting lineup to Sam Johnstone, and is currently contracted to the black country club until 2027. But West Ham are ‘closely monitoring’ the 32-year-old, and Wolves would be willing to let him leave.
Hermansen Future Surely Lies Elsewhere
Hermansen was one of the standout performers for Leicester in the 2024/25 campaign, but the Foxes were relegated to the Championship.
That saw him targeted by a number of clubs during the summer transfer window, but it was West Ham who won the race for his signature as they looked for a new number one. However, it’s clear the deal hasn’t worked out too well for him or the club.
Should a move for Sa become more possible, it’s likely that the Irons would look to allow Hermansen to move on elsewhere in order to recoup some of the fee they splashed out on him just six months ago, while also bringing in someone that Nuno himself actually wants as part of the squad.
January is likely to see big changes at the London Stadium with James Ward-Prowse another who could move on, but it’s clear there are plans in the works behind the scenes to get the manager the help he needs to save their Premier League status.
