Nintendo is making an alarm clock so you can wake up to Zelda and Super Mario sounds
It’s not a successor to the Switch, but Nintendo does have a new piece of hardware to announce: a motion-controlled alarm clock. The device is called Alarmo, and it “responds to your movements,” which means you can snooze it with a gesture, or stop it by actually getting out of bed. It costs $99.99 and will be available in early 2025, though Nintendo says Switch Online subscribers can purchase it early right now.
It appears this is the mystery Nintendo gadget that hit the FCC last month. In addition to the motion features, a big part of the device appears to be its immersive sounds, which are pulled from five different Switch games: Breath of the Wild, Pikmin 4, Splatoon 3, Super Mario Odyssey, and Ring Fit Adventure. There are 35 audio “scenes” in total, though you can also connect the alarm to your Nintendo account for more pulled from Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Mario Kart 8, which will be free updates coming later.
There are some sleep tracking features as well. Here’s how Nintendo describes them:
You can also check Records to see how much you move around in your sleep, set an hourly chime themed to your chosen title, and change between Steady or Gentle Modes for your morning alarm. In Steady Mode, the alarm will gradually get more intense the longer you stay in bed, whereas Gentle Mode offers a more consistent intensity level. There’s also Button Mode for a more traditional, tactile “hit the snooze button” alarm clock experience. You can even use sleepy sounds to wind down with soothing music and sounds at your set bedtime.
Back in the old days, there was no sure-fire indicator of box office poison more than a video game adaptation. The two mediums just didn’t gel. That has changed in recent years and now all kinds of gaming mascots are getting their chance to appear in a major motion picture or, at the very least, . Case in point? They’re now making a movie based on Shinobi, .
For the uninitiated, Shinobi is a famous hack-and-slash game developed by Sega in which you play as a ninja. There have been plenty of sequels throughout the years, though they mostly share the same basic story. Joe Musashi, the ninja, must beat up a bunch of very bad dudes. That’s pretty much it.
In other words, this is a blank canvas in which the filmmakers can do pretty much whatever they want without angering the online lore-keepers. Sam Hargrave has been tasked to direct the film for Universal, which is actually a decent choice. He made both Extraction films, with a third one on the way. These are solid action flicks and Shinobi is an action game.
Ken Kobayashi is writing the screenplay, after working on the for Apple+. He was also involved with Moonfall and the Marvel adaptation Hit Monkey. Sega’s Toru Nakahara, who has produced everything from the Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe, is also onboard.
Shinobi is still in the early stages of development, just like how most Shinobi players only get past the early stages of the game because it’s so dang hard. We don’t know when it’ll come out, nor do we have any casting news. We are, however, only a couple of months out . Keanu Reeves is in that one.
Following its $40 million fundraise at the beginning of this year, streaming media company Plex announced on Wednesday it’s rolling out a new TV show and movie reviews feature, putting its app in more direct competition with other apps, like Letterboxd and TV Time. The feature will also include social networking elements, as the reviews can be shared with your friends on Plex and even friends of friends.
The company moved into the social networking space last year with the launch of a new “Discover Together” feature that allowed users to create profiles on the app and find and follow friends in order to discover news movies and shows together. With Discover Together, users could share what they’re watching with friends, what they’re bookmarking, and what they’ve rated the content. This latest release of movie and TV show reviews builds on that existing framework, making Plex not just a streaming hub, but also a streaming community.
Plex says that, initially, users’ reviews will only be shared within their network of friends and their friends, but it’s working on an update that will later allow users to share their ratings and reviews with anyone on the service. The company says it’s seeking beta testers for this feature now.
To access the new feature, users will need a verified email address to get started, but can then create their reviews from either the web interface or the mobile apps. To review items from your Personal Media library, users will need to enable a Sync Watch State & Ratings feature, Plex notes. Reviews will need to abide by Plex’s existing Community Guidelines, as well.
In addition, Plex users will be able to control which reviews they’ll see when on movie and show detail pages by accessing a new “Ratings and Reviews” option under Account settings. From here, users can choose to see reviews from Plex users and critics, users only, critics only, or from no one.
Plex users’ existing privacy settings will be preserved, as well — an area that Plex had earlier run into problems with due to how Discover Together was an opt-out, not opt-in experience, leading to users leaking their embarrassing viewing habits to friends and family.

It’s Internet Explorer day in US v. Google!
We’re a bit over an hour into Sundar Pichai’s testimony in US v. Google, and we’ve spent a surprising amount of the morning in a time machine back to 2005.
That’s when Microsoft released Internet Explorer 7 (the browser a Pichai-led team would ultimately crush by launching Google Chrome). At the time, Google’s legal chief David Drummond sent Microsoft a letter that was very mad about search defaults. Drummond wanted a choice screen, and said Google was very worried about the anticompetitive nature of Microsoft prioritizing its own search engine.
Pichai is being asked a lot of questions that amount to, “this is now the argument against you, right?” So far, he’s sparring with it pretty well.
