Bolton News Education Awards School of the Year 2025

Little Lever School is our School of the Year at the Bolton News Education Awards 2025, sponsored by Bolton Council.

The secondary school is not just “one of the most improved schools”, but “one of the highest performing schools in the North West”.

A failing school in 2018, all staff pulled together to create a core purpose which was ‘to help every person achieve things they never thought they could’ and have worked incredibly hard to transform the life chances of children in this community.

The judges also took into account the fact that Little Lever School achieved its best set of GCSE results this year, and that all performance measures are improving for all groups of children.

Headteacher, Dominic Mckeon, said: “I feel personally really, really proud, I think the staff feel really, really proud of the hard work that people have put into the school over many, many years.

“Little Lever is a fantastic school and that’s a testament to the students that work incredibly hard every day, the staff that work hard every day, and I suppose this little piece of glass here is a symbol of all that hard work and effort that everyone has put in over many, many years.

“Staff here see it as a duty, it’s what we do, so we set a really clear core purpose to help every person achieve things they never thought they could, and we have our set of values: be kind, work hard and take responsibility.

“That is the mantra, we don’t think too much about Ofsted and various things like that, we do it for the children, and it’s a duty and an obligation for all the staff in the school to do that and help children have that magic feeling of success that they get on a day to day basis.”
