World’s best airport is now in Europe – with lounge for teens, unique museum, spa and cheap UK flights
THE BEST airport in the world is now in Europe – and there are cheap flights there from the UK.
Istanbul Airport has been voted the best by Conde Nast Traveler in it’s
It was also voted the best earlier this year by Travel + Leisure.
It opened in 2018, before welcoming passengers in 2019.
The airport has routes to 317 destinations with including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.
Some of the cheapest are with Wizz Air, flying from London Stansted which can be found for as little as £47 return.
And Turkish Airlines is hoping to connect Istanbul Airport to both Glasgow and Newcastle for the first time.
But if you want to spend some time at the airport or you have a long layover, there is a lot to keep you busy
One of its main attractions is the Istanbul Airport Museum – one of the the largest of its kinds in the world.
Inside are 316 works from 29 museums, with the current exhibition being Türkiye’s Treasures; Faces of the Throne.
There is also the Istanbul Airport library, with 2,000 books to choose from.
For younger kids there are 11 kids playgrounds to choose from.
Five of theme are themed, called Cigaland Forest, Cigaland Space, Cigaland Sea, Cigaland Sky and Cigaland Ice.
There is even a designated Youth Lounge area – suited for anyone between 15 and 30 – with Playstations, board games, a football table and projectors, as well as snacks and drinks.
An on-site spa has massages, manicures and haircuts and you can even reserve private sleeping pods showers and ‘business pods’ for working.
Even the airports restaurants are award-winning, being named the World’s best Airport Dining by Skytrax this year.
With more than 100 restaurants and cafes, Saltbae even opened his first airport restaurant there last year.
It’s on-site airport hotel, Yotel is one of the biggest airport hotels in the world, and is the largest in Europe.
There are 451 rooms to choose from, with 171 landside and 280 airside.
Istanbul Airport also hopes to become the world’s largest aviation hub.
What is it like to travel through Istanbul Airport
The Sun’s Assitant Travel Editor Sophie Swietochowski visited the airport last year.
“IF THERE’S one airport I wouldn’t mind being seriously delayed in, it’s Istanbul in Turkiye.
“The place is vast and shiny with enough food (for any budget), shopping (think chic clothes and hand-painted kitchenware), and entertainment (there’s even a library home to 2,000 books) to keep you occupied for hours on end.
“Better still, if your flight gets cancelled you won’t even need to endure the faff of security again as the large Yotel sits airside.
“I visited last year and couldn’t have been more grateful for the size of the place, meaning I could whizz straight past the screaming kids in the massive Lego store and head straight to the food courts where I had no problem finding a quiet seat for a drink – Çay Saati has traditional Turkish tea.
“In fact many stores in the airport blend Turkish traditions with the modern world and you could certainly get a flavour of Turkiye without ever leaving the terminal.
“The size of the place comes with a downside, though. Make sure you keep an eye out for your gate as it will take you a while to walk there – and try not to get lost on the way.”
The four-phase expansion, set to be complete by 2025, will increase its capacity from 90million to 120million.
And by 2028, this will expand to 200million, with six new runways.
Chief executive Selahattin Bilgen told CNBC: “Istanbul Airport is breaking records in European aviation.
“About 80 per cent of our passengers are international, and half of these are transfer passengers, contributing directly to our economy through their foreign exchange expenditures.”
Istanbul Airport beat Singapore’s Changi Airport, often also named one of the worlds best airports.
And the airport has revealed plans for a new £7.6billion terminal – which will take passenger numbers to 120million a year.
We’ve also rounded up five huge new airports set to open in Europe in the next few decades.
World’s Best Airports according to Conde Nast Traveler
1. Istanbul Airport (IST)
2. Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)
3. Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN)
4. Hamad International Airport (DOH)
5. Zurich Airport (ZRH)
6. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
7. Dubai International Airport (DXB)
8. Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)
9. Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)
10. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM)

Small UK airport scraps two of its strictest hand luggage rules
A UK airport has ditched some of its much-hated security rules.
Bournemouth Airport passengers will be able to keep more of their items in their luggage when travelling through.
Most airports still require travellers to take both laptops and liquids out of their bags when going through security.
This can result in much longer queues especially at peak times.
However, the small UK airport has said that this is no longer the case.
Instead, they can both remain in any luggage going through the scanners.
An statement released by the airport reads: “Bournemouth Airport has completed the process of installing and testing new security screening equipment to improve passenger security.
“For hand luggage this means that with immediate effect, passengers flying from Bournemouth Airport can now leave Liquids and large electrical items such as laptops in their cabin baggage.
“Passengers flying from Bournemouth Airport will no longer need to present liquids separately in a clear plastic bag however, liquids are still restricted to containers of up to 100ml.”
Sun Travel has contacted Bournemouth Airport for comment.
The current liquid rules remain in place across the UK which is that all liquids must be under 100ml, and all fit into a small plastic bag.
This had hoped to be scrapped earlier this year across the UK.
Despite a number of UK airports scrapping the rules, the government u-turned just days later.
There is no confirmed date when this will be lifted again.
When it is, Brits will be able to take as much as 2l of liquids in their hand luggage without restriction.
And holidaymakers will still have to check the rules when going abroad.
Other airports who don’t follow the rules will require tourists to still carry liquids under 100ml.
But there is even better news for Bournemouth Airport, with Jet2 launching 16 new routes from the airport next year.
Spanish destinations will include the Alicante, Ibiza, Menorca, Majorca, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife.
Corfu, Heraklion, Rhodes and Zante in Greece will also be added, as well as Turkey‘s Antalya and Dalaman, along with Faro and Funchal in Portugal.
And the airport has revealed plans for a £5million expansion, with predictions to welcome a record one million passengers.
Hand luggage rules for UK airlines
We’ve rounded up how much hand luggage you can take on UK airlines when booking their most basic fare.
Ryanair
One personal bag measuring no more than 40cm x 20cm x 25cm
EasyJet
One personal bag measuring no larger than 45cm x 36cm x 20cm
Jet2
One personal item that fits underneath the seat in front and one cabin bag no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm weighing up to 10kg
TUI
One personal item that its underneath the seat in front and one cabin bag no larger than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm weighing up to 10kg
British Airways
One personal bag no larger than 40cm x 30cm x 15cm and one cabin bag no larger than 56cm x 45cm 25cm weighing up to 23kg
Virgin Atlantic
One personal item that fits underneath the seat in front and one cabin bag no larger than 56cm x 36cm x 23cm weighing up to 10kg
Here is a clever way to swerve the liquids restrictions.
And we’ve reviewed the best hand luggage bags that people rave about for avoiding baggage fees.

Top trending European destinations 2025 – including little-visited Spanish city and Italian seaside resorts
SKYSCANNER has revealed some of the top trending holiday destinations for 2025 – and five of them are in Europe.
The global travel site has analysed which destinations have seen a boom in searches.
The Travel Trends report is based on searches between January and June in 2024, compared to the same time in 2024.
Coming out on top was Reggio Calabria in Italy, with 541 per cent increase in searches.
Both easyJet and Ryanair have launched flights from the UK to Lamezia Terme, the airport in Calabria.
The seaside region is a cheaper alternative to the pricey Amalfi Coast.

Coming in second was Tartu in Estonia, with a 294 per cent increase in searches.
The overlooked city has been named the European Capital of Culture for 2024.
Spain‘s Córdoba also made the list, a city Brits may not think to visit, but has seen an increase on searches by 133 per cent.
In the southern region of Andalusia, it was once one of Europe‘s largest cities, and has a lot of African influences.
It’s main attractions include the huge Mezquita mosque and the Renaissance Viana Palace.
It’s not the easiest to get to you – Brits have to fly to Seville then take a train taking just under an hour – but the city recently recorded record overnight stays from tourists.
Other European destinations to make the trending list include Tromsø in Norway, with an increase of 85 per cent.
Most head to Tromsø for the Northern Lights, and easyJet, British Airways and Norwegian have new flights.
And Germany‘s Stuttgart made the top ten, with a 70 per cent increase in searches.
Naomi Hahn, VP of Strategy at Skyscanner comments: “Skyscanner’s Travel Trends report reveals that 2025 will be the year of collective travel experiences.
“Now, more than ever, travellers are increasingly seeking travel experiences that foster community and collective discovery.
“The cost of living, though, remains top of mind and our money-saving tools continue to rise in popularity.
“Our ‘Everywhere’ search, showing prices from the lowest to highest from airports to global destinations, is still one of the top search destinations for travellers globally this year.”
The top 10 includes other long-haul destinations too.
Siem Reap in Cambodia, America’s Baltimore and Portsmouth in Dominica are trending.
The list also included Panglao Bohol in the Philippines and Thiruvananthapuram in India.
