Tottenham star Cristian Romero calls out Daniel Levy in risky complaint with three examples given

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has launched a scathing criticism of the club’s leadership, warning chairman Daniel Levy that insufficient investment is causing the team to fall behind their Premier League rivals.

The stark comments come as Spurs sit 11th in the Premier League following Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Chelsea.

The north London club have won just one of their past seven games in all competitions, with pressure mounting after losing four matches during this poor run of form.

In a candid interview with Telemundo Deportes, Romero pointed to the investment patterns of rival clubs as examples Tottenham should follow.

“Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results. Those are the things to imitate,” said the defender.

“You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they realise it,” he added.

Romero’s criticism went beyond investment patterns, directly challenging the club’s leadership structure.

“The last few years, it’s always the same: first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible,” the Argentine international stated.

He pointedly added: “Hopefully, they realise who the true responsible ones are, and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year.”

Since Daniel Levy joined the board in 2000, Tottenham have claimed just one trophy – the 2008 League Cup.

Despite spending around £350million since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival in July 2023, the club has struggled to compete for silverware.

Romero, however, maintains strong support for the current manager, stating: “He’s a great coach. We are very happy with this staff, me and my colleagues. We love how they work and the football they try to play.”

The criticism comes from a player who has experienced significant managerial turnover during his time at the club.

Romero has played under five different managers, including caretakers, since joining Tottenham in August 2021.

“Players are the first one to be criticised, then if we lose 10 games, the staff can be changed, but nobody talks about what is actually happening,” he added.

Tottenham will be hoping to get back on track on Thursday when they face Rangers to help their chances of automatically qualifying for the Europa League last-16.

They currently sit behind Rangers in the table, but a significant win could see them jump up into the top eight.
