Cricket great Derek ‘Deadly’ Underwood left family more than £800,000 in his will
CRICKET great Derek Underwood left more than £800,000 in his will, probate documents reveal.
England’s most successful spinner — nicknamed Deadly — bequeathed the money to his family.
The star, who died in April aged 78, left £826,000, reduced to £823,000 after debts and costs were deducted.
Wife Patricia Cheeseman was given £50,000 in cash, as well as his home and car.
The remainder was given to his daughters, Fiona and Heather, from his marriage to first wife Dawn Sullivan.
Left-armer Derek took 297 wickets in 86 Tests between 1966 and 1982.
Before the use of covers Underwood was considered unplayable on wet pitches and inspired England to a famous win over Australia at The Oval after the crowd helped mop up the field.
Placid on and off the field, he was known as an unlikely ladies man.
Kent and England team-mate Brian Luckhurst joked that Derek was the only man his wife would leave him for.
Sir Geoffrey Boycott said of his friend: “I don’t know anybody that could play him or hit him after it had rained on those pitches.
“Derek was a one-off, brilliant, extraordinary bowler – unique. There was nobody else like him in English cricket.”
Flags flew at half-mast at grounds across the country to salute the left-armer who, although a spinner, bowled at speeds above 70 miles per hour.
SPIN KING
DEREK Underwood is a legendary figure in cricket thanks to his exploits with England and Kent.
The spinner earned the nickname ‘Deadly’ thanks to the havoc he used to wreak on wet pitches.
There was even a saying that England would carry Underwood “like an umbrella in case of rain”.
Although he was listed as a slow left-armer, he often bowled at medium pace with unerring accuracy and boasted a lethal inswinging arm ball.
Underwood took 296 wickets in 86 Tests for England and was ranked the world’s No1 bowler from September 1969 to August 1973.
He retired in 1987 at the age of 42 having taken almost 2,500 wickets.
Appointed as an MBE in 1981, Wisden named him in a XI of England’s greatest post-war cricketers in 2004.
Underwood was one of six English cricketers to feature in World Series Cricket and also went on the rebel tour of South Africa.

Aaron Rodgers: ‘Sacked Robert Saleh not the main issue for New York Jets’
Former Buffalo Bills assistant coach Phoebe Schecter is an NFL pundit and plays for Great Britain’s flag football team.
Robert Saleh became the first NFL head coach to lose their job this season as he was fired by the New York Jets after last Sunday’s loss in London, and I was surprised that it happened so early.
It’s not like they have a terrible record. They’re 2-3 and going into Monday Night Football against Buffalo, their divisional rivals. They could be playing for first in their division, so it felt a bit abrupt really but, ultimately, I don’t think Saleh was the issue.
When you bring in a quarterback like four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers – one of the biggest names in the sport – you’re bringing in much more than just a player. He almost becomes his own offensive coordinator, right? That’s not necessarily an easy relationship for a head coach and quarterback to have, and there were signs of murkiness in the water between Saleh and Rodgers.
Rodgers had a really good game against the Patriots three weeks ago but there was that moment when Saleh went to hug him and Rodgers pushed him away. Then after losing to Denver, they both talked about cadence issues and people being held accountable. Those were signs it was going this way but coming this soon, I think it’s unfortunate on Saleh.
The Jets have made [defensive coordinator] Jeff Ulbrich the interim head coach and he said [quarterbacks coach] Todd Downing will become the offensive play-caller.
He’s essentially demoted [offensive coordinator] Nathaniel Hackett, which I think is what Saleh wanted to do before he was fired. But Saleh, a defensive-minded head coach, had lost that power on the offensive side of the ball and I don’t feel like Rodgers would have been making that a nice environment for him.
I think it’s really telling that as soon as Ulbrich gets into the role, he demotes Hackett. Ulbrich’s been there, he’s seen what’s going on, he’s been in all the team meetings, so he’s going to know what the issue is.

Aline Pereira delivers ‘Pereira left hook’ KO at Karate Combat 50
Aline Pereira had a pretty good teacher.
Pereira, the sister of UFC champion Alex Pereira, knocked out Dee Begley in the first round at Karate Combat 50 at the Salt Palace Convention Center on Friday night in Salt Lake City, Utah.
“That’s the Pereira left hook. My big brother’s the one that showed me,” Aline Pereira said during post-fight interview.
Aline Pereira, who was making her Karate Combat debut, took the fight despite the fact her opponent Begley missed weight by four pounds.
Alex Pereira, who received a hug from his sister after her win, is coming off a devastating performance of his own when he retained his light heavyweight title with a fourth-round TKO of Khalil Rountree at UFC 307 last Saturday night.

Man Utd in huge security scare as changing room at Aston Villa is bugged with Erik Ten Hag’s team talks recorded
MANCHESTER United’s dressing room was bugged before their match at Aston Villa in a shocking security breach.
A prankster claims he hoodwinked Villa Park staff to sneak in and plant a hidden device two days before the 0-0 draw last Sunday.
It recorded under-fire manager Erik ten Hag’s team talks for the crunch Premier League game.
A source said: “This is a shocking breach of security and some serious questions will be asked as to how this was allowed to happen. Fortunately, there was nothing sinister to this incident.
“It was just a prankster, who’s actually a United fan, being silly and wanting to hear what was said inside those four walls. But it will definitely be a cause for concern about how they managed to get inside a changing room at one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs just days before a match.”
The Sun has heard the recordings but is choosing not to publish details of them.
However, we can reveal Ten Hag’s instructions to the team and individual players can clearly be heard.
The Sun understands the prankster used a phone from China that has a setting where a microphone can be activated by calling it from another device.
He had sticky-taped the handset somewhere out of sight in the United dressing room and only rang it when he knew the manager would be in there.
High alert
Sources claimed the culprit responsible even had the nerve to collect the device on Monday.
It is a similar stunt to the one that saw a Match of the Day studio hit with porn noises while live on air in 2023.
That was the work of Daniel “Jarvo” Jarvis.
However, it is believed that he had no involvement in the Villa recordings.
The latest stunt comes with Premier League chiefs already on high alert after a string of pranks targeting stadiums and teams.
In May, United were targeted by YouTuber Lizwani – who previously got on stage at the Baftas alongside the Oppenheimer cast.
He managed to sneak on to the Red Devils’ team bus after a 4-0 hammering at Crystal Palace’s Selhurst Park.
Lizwani brazenly took a seat before he was removed.
They are doing it to get a load of hits on YouTube and make their fans laugh. They aren’t trying to cause trouble or do harm to anyone
A source
That breach led to Prem bosses firing off alerts to the top flight’s 20 clubs advising them to watch out for similar stunts.
A source said: “These people are mostly harmless and doing it for a bit of fun.
“They are doing it to get a load of hits on YouTube and make their fans laugh. They aren’t trying to cause trouble or do harm to anyone.”
Manchester United have suffered their worst start to a Premier League season, sitting in 14th on just eight points after seven games.
Ten Hag, 54, told the media after the game at Villa he was “very pleased” with the performance.
It came off the back of a 3-3 draw at Porto in the Europa League – where they blew a 2-0 lead – and a 3-0 pummelling by Spurs at Old Trafford.
Seven hour meeting
The Villa 0-0 was the Red Devils’ fifth game without a win – their last being a 7-0 Carabao Cup win over League One side Barnsley.
It is a far cry from the glory days of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who famously called high-pressure moments “squeaky bum time”.
The United hierarchy — including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe — held a seven-hour meeting at Old Trafford last week with Ten Hag’s future up in the air.
They have remained silent over the manager’s position, with Sir Jim recently failing to publicly back him.
However, Ten Hag — currently on holiday during the international break — insists he still has the bosses’ support.
He said: “I don’t have any idea that is different because they should have told me.
“We communicate — very open, very transparent. I would say every day we talk, so I expect I will speak with them.”
He dismissed the “external noise”, adding: “Internal, we are disappointed.
“We know we have to do better. Especially, we need to score more.”
In 2016, Old Trafford suffered a bomb scare after a dummy device planted by a security company was found in a a toilet.
The fiasco led to United’s Premier League game against Bournemouth being called off.
Man Utd and Aston Villa were approached for comment yesterday.
Porn stunt on Match Of The Day
By Amir Razavi
MATCH of the Day viewers were stunned to hear porn noises during the show in another phone prank.
They were coming from a device stuck to a wall by Daniel “Jarvo” Jarvis before a Wolves-Liverpool FA Cup tie at Molineux in 2023.
He activated its speaker remotely from another device during the live broadcast, to the amusement of presenter Gary Lineker.
Jarvo, also behind a string of other pranks at major sporting events, told The Sun at the time: “These things are all about confidence. If you hesitate, then you’ll get asked questions. People from Wolves thought we were with the TV, and vice versa.”
