It’s all about the Jordans: Tyler Reddick dishes on impressive shoe game

As the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Kansas Speedway, it is a track where the Air Jordan paint scheme first won with Kurt Busch. Tyler Reddick has since won (at Talladega) with the Jumpman logo on the hood.

Which makes one think, now that he has driven for 23XI Racing — co-owned by Michael Jordan — for the past couple of years, what type of shoe game does Tyler Reddick have?

Here’s Reddick talking a little bit about sneakers with FOX Sports:

Since you race for Michael Jordan, I’m curious about your history with sneakers. Like, were you a big shoe guy before?

I like shoes, but I went to the dirt track and lived in a hauler. The hauler was dirty. The track’s muddy. That’s just no place for Jordans to be, honestly, if you really cared about wearing it more than a month. So I didn’t have a grand collection, that’s for sure. But we race asphalt everywhere we go now. We had that one dirt race, It’s been nice to know the only time I have to worry about what I’ve got on my feet is when I get out of the plane or walk to the rental car in the grass lot. Other than that, I know I can, for the most part, keep my shoes pretty clean.

Do you pay a lot more attention to shoes now that you drive for MJ?

I always did pay attention to shoes. But it’s just been really fun to … probably my favorite brand of shoe was Jordans. And now I get to just stockpile them. I’ve got many choices when it comes to what color I’m going to wear that day with what I have on the car, or what I’m feeling like wearing to the shop, or whatever I’ve got going on. Between the highs and lows, I’ve got plenty of options for summer and winter.

So do friends ask you now for shoes?

They have, yeah. Trying to figure out what I can put where and who can get what is a task.

Do you go back and forth like, I can give them, no, I should keep them. Or how do you balance it?

Anything I get shipment-wise, I’m keeping all of it because it’s my size. But, if I’m ever looking around and see a shoe that I like, but they don’t have it in my size, I try and think, “OK, who’s that size?” And decide if I’m going to get it or not.

I guess then not many people have your size of shoe?

I think the 9 is normal. The 9s are hardly ever in stock. Size 9, I feel like it’s kind of in that window of shoes that are hard to find.

And so how many shoes do you have? Do you have a storage space for shoes at home?

I’m out of storage space. I’ve got to take my workout/storage room and turn it into a shoe room. That’ll be fun.

It’s pretty wild? 

Yeah, you would think my wife would have all the shoes. But it’s actually me that has all the shoes.

Will Davison to start Bathurst 1000 after heavy qualifying crash

Dick Johnson Racing looks ready to continue its Bathurst 1000 assault after an amazing all-night rebuild on Will Davison’s Ford Mustang at Mount Panorama.

Davison experienced a 58G impact in a crash at The Dipper at the end of qualifying, just down the road from where David Reynolds had himself hit the wall earlier in the session.

The incident, which prevented Brock Feeney from taking provisional pole, left Davison sat in the car to catch his breath as Nick Percat stopped and assisted, though the DJR driver eventually left the car under his own steam.

Barely 12 hours later, the DJR crew managed to fire up a virtually rebuilt Mustang after a heroic rebuild. The car has been stripped back to a bare chassis and repairs affected the front and rear ‘clips’.

Team Principal Dr Ryan Story posted images on social media of the team’s mechanics working on the car at 4:30am Saturday morning.

 

The car is expected to be ready to take to the track for the next practice session, which is set for 10:05am local time, in which it will be driven by co-driver Kai Allen.

That session is for co-drivers only, while Davison is expected to be back behind the wheel for the final practice session at 1:10pm local time.

The veteran has been cleared of any major injuries, with the car set to start Sunday’s race from 16th on the grid, while teammate Anton De Pasquale will participate in the top 10 shootout. He is due to be the second car out on the track in that session, which is due to start at 5:05pm local time.

Super Formula scraps planned 2025 South Korea race

Super Formula has cancelled next season’s planned visit to South Korea’s Inje Speedium, and will instead race entirely within Japan in 2025.

Series promoter JRP made the announcement on Saturday ahead of this weekend’s penultimate round of the season at Fuji, although it’s understood that teams had already been informed of the move late last month.

It comes not much more than a month on from the official confirmation of the Inje race, which followed confirmation from Japanese national federation JAF that the series would be venturing to South Korea for its first overseas race since it visited Sepang in 2004.

Addressing reporters at Fuji, JRP boss Yoshihisa Ueno said negotiations with the Inje promoter had been proceeding, but as the conditions could not be met in the agreed timeframe, the decision was made to give up on holding the race in 2025.

However, Ueno did not discount the prospect of the event returning in 2026 as Super Formula pursues a policy of expanding its footprint in Asia.

Besides the Inje race, the remainder of the calendar remains the same compared to the draft unveiled at the end of August, with 12 races (including five double-headers) still representing the highest number of races held in a single year in Super Formula history.

The removal of Inje from the Super Formula calendar alleviates one of two clashes with the FIA World Endurance Championship schedule, as the Korean round was set to fall on the same weekend as the test day for the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Kamui Kobayashi previously told Motorsport.com that he was unsure whether he would continue in Super Formula owing to both that clash and the conflict between the Motegi race and the WEC’s visit to Imola in April, which remains in place.

Additionally, this year’s FIA Prize Gala in the Rwandan capital of Kigali is likely to prevent Kobayashi from attending Super Formula’s post-season test at Suzuka in December.
