Most of the work is planned to take place during school holidays
Roadworks planned to last nine months are due to start at two junctions in March, Cambridgeshire, on February 9. The A141 March Road/Twenty Foot Road junction is being relocated and upgraded.
Traffic lights will be installed on new traffic islands, with a right turn lane for those joining Twenty Foot Road. The roads will be resurfaced, with new signs and lining put in.
Work will also be carried out to upgrade the signalised junction at St Peter’s Road, March. This will creating a new right turn lane on the B1101, The Causeway approach, resurfacing, creating cycle boxes at each arm of the junction, and installing two new tactile toucan crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.
A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson said the upgrade aims to enhance safety for drivers and cyclists while improving the flow of traffic. They added: “Preparatory works will take place during the Easter holidays and May half term, with most of the works timed to take place during the quieter summer holidays to reduce disruption to drivers travelling around the town centre.”
The projects are part of the March Area Transport Study, following on from works completed on Broad Street and the town centre in 2024. The total cost of the junction improvements and resurfacing is estimated to be around £4m.
The A141/Twenty Foot Road work is anticipated to take around nine months. The St Peter’s Road works are due to be completed by September.
Cllr Alex Beckett, Chair of the Highways and Transport Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Putting in signals at these busy junctions will help improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers where accidents have happened in the past. These two schemes are just part of our wider investment in March which aims to make it easier for everyone to get around as the town grows.”
Temporary traffic lights will be used during some of the works at both locations. When temporary traffic lights are needed on the A141 during morning peak times, they will be manned in person. There will be no access to Twenty Foot Road from the A141 while the works are underway.
Work at St Peter’s Road junction has been planned to use the quieter school holiday times. A county council spokesperson said: “In both locations, the aim is to keep the need for temporary traffic lights at a minimum to reduce the impact of the roadworks on drivers and to keep traffic flowing around the town.”
