My opinion of course. This seems to be overcomplicated for a file server that will be used as an archive. 1. TrueNas should be a bare metal build, proxmox is adding an unnecessary layer and potential for failure. 2. DDR4 ECC is a much better platform for TruNas that has TRUE ECC unlike DDR5.
This use case and hardware choice would be much better suited for UNRAID.

Hi! I am Alexander, and I just want to share one of my biggest wishes ever. I am not expecting too much from someone to give me this, but hopefully there is. I have been wishing to have a GPU for a few years, but I can't afford to buy one because of a financial problem with my parents, and I am not expecting to have a known-brand one. That's why any model or brand will be enough for me, and I will be so happy to have it. I have an upcoming AutoCAD contest in April, and I am the chosen one to be competent for our school, but I am still using a 7-year-old computer, as you can see in my profile, and I think my PC can't keep up with the other PCs of my opponents because it is too slow and too old nowadays. But I am not planning to replace the whole PC, just the GPU, because I know that I am not from a rich family. It's not a problem for me if it's second-hand, low quality, old, or whatever; I just really need it, and I will be so happy to have it.😊

    tp link TX401 ( 10Gb/s Lan ).

  6. @safedave9689

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

you would be better taking those drives and passing them through to truenas
    shell commands:

    ls -l /dev/disk/by-id/

then find the ids and copy them i usually copy them to a text document and add one for each drive

qm set 101 -scsi1 /dev/disk/by-id/ID FROM PROXMOX TO PASSTHROUGH

qm set 101 -scsi2 /dev/disk/by-id/ID FROM PROXMOX TO PASSTHROUGH
    ect

you will get full throughput of the drives for the vm

Bruh yes thank you iv watched you for years iv been waiting for you to get into server stuff. Glad you’re getting into it now. There’s a huge community for this kinda thing so all the support you could ask for.

  9. @arubial1229

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

Never….EVER…do this. If you must virtualize TrueNAS, you absolutely MUST pass through your HBA to the VM so that ZFS has direct access to the drives. This is a recipe for disaster. It will work…until it doesn’t, and then all your data is gone.

I think maybe having a sata ssd for boot and using the nvme drives as read/write cache could be good if you need to as ZFS can use lv2 arc

i would recomend a sas hba (somthing cheap from ebay) as you are best to pass through the entire HBA using iommu to the truenas zfs loves ram so i would as others mentioned give it as much as you can spare.
i have not done much research into ddr5 as it has some ecc features but ECC memory is best to be used with truenas as a best practice.

good to see the switch to serverthingy's, i'm oversaturated in gaming pc hardware.., seen some video's explaining the new dlss/fsr and they new thing from that framegen i guess, that you are a math teacher is nice and i don't understand why you could explain gaming plugins like dlss/fsr/frame gen.. but you are not specialized in software things at all as far as i understood..
I think there's a complete new endevour i'f you like to.. i'd be interested in network/latency because i'm a noob in that.. hahaha should invest some time myself to learn instead of easy way out watching and learning..

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

Just a question: You said a few times that the 850W PSU is overkill, but why go for that then? Is it a sponsorship choice?

  35. @jb4608s

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

Also at 22:15 in the video: is that strip coming loose from the server? I have the same case and that shouldn't happen.

Built loads of computers most recently my favourite is sff. Never built a server!!.

  37. @DoiGiayBay

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

i think AMD Epyc or Intel Xeon is better than popular cpu. Mainboard quality same that.

  38. @dash8brj

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

Agree with everyone else. Give polaris a hba and pass it through to truenas. You'll get better performance and security of your data this way. I have Unraid running on bare metal and truenas running under proxmox with an LSI HBA and quad NVME card passed through. With my new server (dual xeons totalling 72 threads) I am slowly migrating all my seperate bare metal machines to it. Presently it is hosting truenas, pi-hole, opnsense, a PXE server, wireguard and jellyfin along with a Time Machine "capsule" to handle the backup of 2 mac computers

Make sure when getting a HBA, to get one that is preflashed to IT mode, or be prepared to do it yourself either through dos commands, or EFI shell commands..

  39. @dominikheinz2297

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

PSU draws air from the top. How is this supposed to work if I have other rack units above it in the rack? Then the PSU can't draw in any air at all…

  40. @PCGACID

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

im just gonna use an old AMD AM4 5900X 12 Core for my first server and 64GB DDR4 and older GB X570S Aorus Master with 4x SATA RAID HDDs (4 cuz with bottom m.2 the last 2x SATA ports get disabled when m.2_4 is populated 😭) and 4x NVMe Gen4 SSDs 1TB for Caching ( a 4TB NVMe Cache) on SATA Raid ., ( IF I CAN BE DONE) I know it can cuz some Newer NAS devices have 4 bays sata with 2x nvme m.2 slots for caching so this is where i got the idea from

  41. @GruntyGame

    October 15, 2024 at 2:51 pm

When I first started my home NAS, I gave into the temptation of Windows Storage Spaces. It was pain the entire way, and a massive waste of time.

New Home Backup Server (Dell T640 with 18 20TB Disks)

In this video I create a new backup server from a Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 with 18x 20TB Seagate Exos refurbished drives. Also there’s some more ranting about backups in general. But idk, there are chapters so you can skip to whatever. And it’s not technically a server, in that it doesn’t serve files. It’s really more of a client that takes files from other servers and holds onto them. But I call it a backup server because hardware-wise it’s a server. Anywho, that’s the description. It’s probably not optimal for the YouTube algorithm, but hey, I’m not an influencer even though I have a TikTok account that I don’t use.

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

Published

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. The Turing Award-winning computer scientist pioneered the field of distributed systems, where multiple components on different networks coordinate to achieve a common objective. (Internet searches, cloud computing and artificial intelligence all involve orchestrating legions of powerful computing machines to work together.) In the early 1980s, Lamport also created LaTeX, a document preparation system that provides sophisticated ways to typeset complex formulas and format scientific documents. In 1989, Lamport invented Paxos, a “consensus algorithm” that allows multiple computers to execute complex tasks; without it, modern computing could not exist. He’s also brought more attention to a handful of problems, giving them distinctive names like the bakery algorithm and the Byzantine Generals Problem. Lamport’s work since the 1990s has focused on “formal verification,” the use of mathematical proofs to verify the correctness of software and hardware systems. Notably, he created a “specification language” called TLA+ (for Temporal Logic of Actions), which employs the precise language of mathematics to prevent bugs and avoid design flaws.
