Ricky Gervais shares concerning detail about classic Office scene

Ricky Gervais’s dance scene in The Office is a classic sitcom moment – but it left those around him “genuinely worried” about his health.

The David Brent actor, who co-created the series with Stephen Merchant, shared the revelation while celebrating the groundbreaking sitcom’s 25th anniversary.

Gervais reflected on the dance scene in a special he published on YouTube, calling it “probably the most famous single thing I’ve ever done” – but said “there was a small chance of heart failure” due to the energy exerted to pull it off.

“I remember after I filmed it, I was sat in a corner on a chair and they were fanning me,” he said.

“I think I was the blobbiest I’ve ever been. I think I was like 14 stone, no muscles to speak of, just a blob. So, I think people were genuinely worried the way I was breathing afterwards.”

He continued: “Tom Cruise jumps off buildings. Do I want to do a little dance? I’ll have a go. It would f***ing kill me now. I’m glad I recorded it to show I did it once.”

Gervais said that, while the scene was “totally improvised”, he “sort of knew the type of thing” he was going to do when filming took place.

“I quite like the fact that it looked nearly real,” he said. “Some of them looked a bit like dance moves, and I can’t believe how low I got when I did the crab. I couldn’t do that now.”

Gervais did three takes of the dance in all – one in which Brent’s colleagues laughed, one in which Brent himself laughed and another with those around him “looking bewildered” – and then they “cut it together in the edit” to make it look like one take.

Earlier this week, Martin Freeman, who played Tim Canterbury on the show, took umbrage with Gervais and Merchant’s historic claims that the show was fully scripted.

The actor sat down with Mackenzie Crook, who played Gareth, for a BBC Two special titled Remember… The Office, where he said: “What slightly annoyed me at the time, but only slightly at the time, is that when the scripts were published, they weren’t the scripts – they were the transcriptions of what had been on telly, so that annoyed me a little bit because anyone who knows any of us knows that line came from you in that moment, that line came from me.”

He continued: “It was loose, and that’s to Ricky and Stephen’s credit because the scripts were absolutely brilliant. It wasn’t improvised, but it was what I would call loose.”

Freeman argued that he “can understand why there was a little bit of protection about that because otherwise people would have gone, ‘Hey, you just rock up and just make it all up,’ which is clearly not the case”.

Naylors completes major industrial lettings in North East

Naylors completes major industrial lettings in North East

Naylors, which led the deals, secured a combined total of almost 175,000 sq ft through transactions involving Headlam Group plc, Project Padel, and national logistics company 3PL.

The largest letting was for Centralway 65, a newly developed 65,000 sq ft industrial unit on Team Valley.

Keith Stewart, managing partner at Naylors, said: “Securing three lettings of more than 50,000 sq ft in a single quarter is an excellent result and reflects the resilience of the North East industrial market.

Commercial property consultant Naylors has completed three major industrial lettings across the North East during the second quarter of 2026, securing almost 175,000 sq ft of space for Headlam Group plc, Project Padel and logistics firm 3PL (Image: Supplied)

“Whilst there remain headwinds in the marketplace, deals are still being secured for the right properties in the right locations.

“Transactions are taking longer, with enhanced due diligence from occupiers to ensure the fundamentals stack up but these lettings demonstrate the continued demand for well-located, high-quality and adaptable space.”

The Team Valley unit was let to Headlam Group plc on behalf of UK Land Estates.

It attracted strong interest from multiple occupiers, highlighting ongoing demand for prime industrial accommodation.

Mr Stewart said: “The letting of Centralway 65 attracted significant interest from multiple occupiers, highlighting the appetite for best-in-class industrial accommodation.

“The Project Padel transaction demonstrates how existing industrial buildings can be successfully repurposed to support evolving occupier requirements, while the Blyth letting shows the value that high-quality refurbishment can bring to the market.”

The second deal saw Naylors secure a 52,972 sq ft warehouse in North Tyneside for Project Padel, acting on behalf of Columbia Threadneedle.

Following a complex change-of-use process, the leisure operator will transform the site into the region’s largest indoor padel facility.

Scheduled to open this summer, the centre will feature eight double padel courts, three single courts, two pickleball courts, a gym, spa, reformer studio, bar, and social workspace.

The third letting involved a 57,000 sq ft refurbished unit in Blyth, let to logistics firm 3PL on behalf of Mileway.

The deal was completed just six weeks after refurbishment—significantly faster than the standard three to six months typically required for an industrial letting.

The unit was upgraded following the departure of previous occupier APS.

Mr Stewart said: “On average, completing an industrial property letting deal in the UK typically takes three to six months, so to secure the Blyth transaction within six weeks of the refurbishment completing was a fantastic outcome.

“The quality of the refurbishment and the location were the key selling points.”

Knight Frank acted as joint agent on the Blyth and Centralway lettings.

Naylors was the sole agent on the Merlin Way deal, while Avison Young represented the tenant.

Welsh legend Michael Sheen’s ‘phenomenal’ serial killer series is streaming

Published

on

Wales Online

Welsh actor Michael Sheen’s crime drama has been hailed “truly special and original” by fans.

Fans of crime dramas should add a two-season series to their viewing lists after audiences praised it as “truly special and original”. The show originally premiered on Fox in 2019, centring on the son of a notorious serial killer known as ‘The Surgeon’.

Having severed all ties with his father, he is compelled to face him once more when a copycat killer begins to emerge.

Welsh actor Michael Sheen takes on the role of the deranged murderer Martin Whitly, who is locked away in a secure psychiatric facility having committed 23 killings.

The series in question is Prodigal Son, which is available to watch on Prime Video.

During the show’s original run, Sheen spoke candidly about inhabiting the role of a serial killer, revealing that he researched a number of real-life killers to perfect his performance.

He told press at the time: “I also looked at Harold Shipman – my character in this is a very well-respected surgeon, so the idea of a doctor who was very loved and respected by people and who took advantage of that and was killing them, I looked at that.

“Ted Bundy, who people found very charming and likeable… his biggest weapon is that he’s funny, and that people like him and warm to him and enjoy his company.”

Viewers flocked to IMDb to share their opinions, with one describing it as “phenomenal”, adding: “Prodigal Son is a great show to watch with the whole family.

“It mixes crime thriller and psychological horror brilliantly. The acting is solid, the cinematography is sleek, and the plot is engaging. If any show can make me emotional and feel a character’s pain (which is what Prodigal Son achieved with me) it’s a show worth watching.”

Another viewer remarked: “Prodigal Son is a truly special and original show that stands out in the crowded field of crime dramas.

“I particularly appreciated the originality of the concept, which brought a fresh perspective to the genre. The dynamic between father and son was absolutely captivating, and the cases were far from boring, unlike in many other shows of this type.”

Since its axing, fans continue to campaign for its revival, with one stating: “I can’t believe I just found out about this TV show. It’s fantastic. And a show like this has been cancelled? Really? This is one of the more entertaining series I’ve ever watched.

“My recommendation to everyone to watch it. Please bring back the Prodigal Son. Please, please.”

A further supporter urged: “Bring it back. This is a very well written show and incredible actors and actresses. There are so many more ways the stories could go. Please consider picking up the show on another network.”

Rupert Lowe Calls Dunblane Massacre One Murder Critics React

Rupert Lowe Calls Dunblane Massacre One Murder Critics React

Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe has been slammed after he described the Dunblane massacre as “one murder”.

The right-wing former Reform UK MP made the remark while being interviewed by Joe Rogan, the world’s most popular podcaster.

The pair were discussing the ban on handguns in the UK, which was introduced following the killing of 16 children aged five and six, and their teacher, by Thomas Hamilton at Dunblane Primary School on March 13, 1996.

Another 15 children and three adults were injured before Hamilton killed himself.

Lowe told Rogan the ban was brought in “because there was a murder up in Dunblane”.

When Rogan then asked the Great Yarmouth MP: “One murder?”, Lowe replied: “One murder.”

Keir Brown, the SNP MSP for Clackmannanshire and Dunblane, said: “Rupert Lowe is a stain on our politics and his comments are beyond despicable.

“Sixteen children and a teacher were shot dead while 15 more children were wounded.

“Despite these hideous remarks from Rupert Lowe, the Snowdrop Campaign that followed that terrible day ensured a ban on the private ownership of most handguns – that is the proud legacy of the bereaved families and the local community.

“Their courage and determination in the aftermath of the attack is something we should never betray and our community will never let the likes of Rupert Lowe do exactly that.”

Scottish Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr said: “One murder? Sixteen kids and their teacher were murdered. Fifteen other primary school children were wounded.

“My children’s school, about 15 minutes from Dunblane, was locked down that day. They’ll never forget being kept in the gym hall until everyone learned the gunman was dead.

“They’ll never forget the teachers trying to hold themselves together while reassuring frightened children.

“To reduce that atrocity to ‘one murder’ is deeply insulting. It wasn’t a single murder. It was a mass murder. In a primary school.

“Almost as disturbing was the tone – one of disbelief, even mockery, that anyone could respond by tightening gun laws.

“This wasn’t some obscure historical event. It happened in 1996, when Lowe was 38 years old.

“He should have known what happened on that terrifying day in Dunblane.

“For anyone who remembers that day, hearing it dismissed so casually is genuinely shocking.”

Lowe told Rogan that he was opposed to the UK’s strict gun laws.

“Effectively, they are trying to make that very difficult through the licensing laws for guns,” he said.

“My father used to shoot pistols for Oxford University and he’s dead now, bless him, but all his pistols were taken away, the pistols he used to shoot with at Oxford University. I mean, we now have a society which needs radical change.”

Stylist’s guide to retro England kit: The ‘cool vintage’ football shirts worth splashing out on… and the naff gear best left in the past

Published

on

In 1966, England's away kit, made by Umbro, was red, white and navy and featured long sleeves

England have reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, meaning there’s no better time to splash out on a football shirt.

And what could be better than purchasing a new one? Going vintage, of course.

But according to celebrity stylist Lisa Talbot, while shirts are worthy of being the star player in your wardrobe others deserve the fashion red card.

She said: ‘With football shirts continuing to dominate both fashion and sport, the World Cup is the perfect excuse to invest in a vintage England top.

‘The best designs have become timeless wardrobe pieces that work just as well with tailored trousers or denim as they do on match day. However, not every retro shirt has aged gracefully.

‘The key is choosing designs that aren’t overly fussy, with clean silhouettes, classic colour palettes and subtle detailing.’

In light of this, Lisa has looked back at England’s shirts from 1966 to 2010 to assess the options worth buying – and which are best left in the kit bag.

Major upgrade planned for historic Penarth building visited by famous stars

Published

on

Wales Online

Holm House, now a luxury retreat, has been visited by the likes of Daniel Craig and Harry Styles in the past

A well known historic building in Penarth that’s welcomed famous guests over the years could soon be upgraded with a sauna, hot tub and more Plans to install external ice baths, a sauna, hot tub and changing rooms at Holm House in Penarth are under discussion by Vale of Glamorgan Council.

During its life as a boutique hotel, Holm House had stars such as Harry Styles, Daniel Craig, Tyson Fury, and David Hasselhof staying there. It closed in 2024 due to the impact of Covid and the cost of living crisis.

Holm House reopened in 2025 with popular restaurant Silures setting up at the site, which is now described as a luxury retreat. For the biggest stories in Wales first sign up to our daily newsletter here

A planning application for the building reads: “The development, to be operated by Hedd Spa, would make a positive contribution to the overall attractiveness and offer of the hospitality business, enhancing its leisure provision and supporting its continued viability.”

It continues: “The outdoor wellness area will be operated as a quiet zone. There will be no walk-in access, no unmanaged public use, no separate outdoor spa admission point, no independent hiring, no alcohol served, and no private parties, events, hen/stag bookings or amplified entertainment in the outdoor wellness area.

“Guests will be briefed on quiet-use requirements and any breach may result in the session being ended.”

The planned “outdoor wellness area” is planned to have a maximum occupancy of six users at any one time, with proposed hours of 09:00 to 20:00 Monday through Saturdays and 10:00 to 18:00 on Sundays and bank holidays.

The application reads that the development has been “carefully designed” to be both “visually attractive” and “clearly functional”, which is suitable for Holm House’s operation as a “high-quality hospitality and leisure offering.”

The development will be located in the hotel’s rear courtyard if approved.

Controversy surrounded the re-opening of Holm House after the new restaurant there celebrated being granted an alcohol licence before the local council had made a decision on their application.

The issue generated anger from residents living nearby, who were worried about potential noise nuisance and anti-social behaviour coming from the site.

Daf Andrews, one of the restaurant’s directors, apologised for the social media post celebrating the alcohol licence at the time.

He wrote: “[The post was made] on the basis if we received the licence… this is how we would celebrate.”

He continued: “We would never assume… and we are certainly not spreading misinformation.

“We were confident and maybe in hindsight we could have phrased it differently.”

A target date for the decision on the new development has been set for August 28 2026.

The 7 Best Cotton Pyjamas To Help You Sleep In The Heatwave

We hope you love the products we recommend! All of them were independently selected by our editors. Just so you know, HuffPost UK may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication.

Consider this your PSA: synthetic material is your enemy in the heatwave.

While it’s fairly easy to avoid polyester and similar materials during the day, there’s one culprit that might stop you from staying cool during the heatwave: your pyjamas.

We all know the struggle of trying to catch Zs during the heatwave – let’s not even get into the ‘to fan or not to fan’ debate – but there are lots of things you can do to improve your sleep quality when it’s hot outside (and inside).

You might think sleeping naked is the solution, but it turns out we actually need fabric to wick moisture (ie. sweat) away from our skin in the night.

But not all pyjamas are made equal, according to Ellie Sheach, nightwear buyer at Pour Moi.

“During hot nights, it’s easier to feel sweatier than normal, and sleeping in synthetic materials can cause moisture to build up, which will only make this feel worse,” Sheach says.

“If you’re not ready to ditch the pyjamas entirely, the most important switch you can make to keep yourself cool is choosing nightwear made of cotton. It’s breathable, moisture-wicking and gentle on the skin. Basically, everything your synthetic fabrics aren’t when temperatures rise.”

If you’re ready to throw out everything you know in honour of a good night’s sleep, we’ve hand picked seven of the best cotton pyjamas to shop to stay cool during the heatwave.

Prince Harry live: Duke of Sussex gets emotional hug as he returns to public eye with hospital visit

Published

Daily Mirror

On Tuesday, one day after his arrival in his home country, Harry made his way to Central London for an Invictus Games Foundation event at Chatham House. The event brought together members of the Invictus community, leading experts and policymakers, including UK minister for veterans and people Calvin Bailey, to discuss issues affecting wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans – all those eligible to take part in the paralympic-style games.

Inside the event, chair of the Invictus Games Foundation Lord Charles Allen, CBE, introduced Harry to the stage just moments after the verdict was delivered, as he thanked the audience for coming before joking that “this is one of the few rooms in the UK that has air conditioning!”

Harry said during his address: “Looking around this room, I see people representing different nations, different governments, different militaries, different organisations and different approaches to recovery. And that’s exactly as it should be.

“No two countries are the same. No two healthcare systems are the same. No two military cultures are the same. What brings us together is far more important than what sets us apart.

“Every one of us believes that those who have served their country – and in particular those whose lives have been changed by that service – deserve more than our gratitude. They deserve opportunity. The chance to redefine one’s Purpose and Identity. They deserve to truly feel our admiration and Respect. And they deserve every chance to build the life they choose beyond military service. That’s what the Invictus Community is all about.”

Harry concluded: “I hope you leave this conference with a deeper understanding of what the Invictus movement really is. Not simply a week of sport every few years, but a community united by one belief: that the unconquered human spirit exists in every nation and that our shared responsibility is to create the conditions in which it can flourish.”
