Gateshead’s FA Trophy match with Farsley Celtic on Tuesday was abandoned following an “on-field medical emergency” involving Farsley captain Lewis Turner.

Play was suspended on 28 minutes after the 32-year-old defender suffered what Farsley described as “a serious injury”.

Both teams returned to the changing rooms while Turner underwent treatment on the field, before he was taken to hospital via ambulance.

The third-round tie was abandoned about 25 minutes after Turner’s injury, with hosts Gateshead leading 1-0.

“Following discussions between both clubs, the decision has been taken to abandon tonight’s game,” the FA Trophy holders said on X.

“Our thoughts go out to Lewis Turner and all involved with Farsley Celtic FC at this time.”

Farsley added: “We will update supporters on Lewis’ condition when possible.”

Turner spent time with the Leeds United academy before playing in non-league for the likes of Chester and Harrogate Town.

His former club Leeds replied on X, saying: “The thoughts of everyone at LUFC are with Lewis at this time and we’re all wishing him a speedy recovery.”
