Dell PowerEdge T630 Tower Workstation Overview & Memory Upgrade Tips | How to Install & Configure

Dell PowerEdge T630 – This video will cover the T630, which is an enterprise level 5U tower server. We will focus mainly on memory and CPUs. We will show how to install and properly configure your memory upgrades. The T630 workstation is part of Dell’s 13th Generation and is the next gen to the very popular Dell PowerEdge T620 tower server. There are 24 DIMM slots running on DDR4 memory. This is the first generation of DDR4 based Dell tower workstations. Dell T630’s run on dual Intel E5-2600 V3 or V4 series CPUs which is an LGA2011-3 processor socket.

Let’s dive deeper into the memory. Speed options include 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s and 2666MT/s. Please do note that 2666 speed will clock down to 2400, which is the true fastest speed. DIMM sizes include 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. There are two types of memory for your T630 server: ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM). Both are excellent options. There is a distinct advantage to load reduced memory. With LRDIMMs you have double the memory scalability when compared to RDIMMs. The max configuration for ECC Reg is 768GB via (24 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-R 2400MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. The max configuration for LRDIMMs is 1.5TB via (24 x 64GB) DDR4 PC4-19200T-L 2400MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. 64GB DDR4 ECC Reg DIMMs are not supported by the T630 workstation.

This system has 2 processors. Each CPU controls 12 memory slots. There are 4 Memory Channels per processor. This means there are 3 DIMMs per Memory Channel. Conveniently, Dell has labeled and color coded the tabs of each DIMM slot. This will make it much easier to properly load your memory upgrades from Cloud Ninjas. You always want to install the first DIMM at the start of the first memory channel. Each memory channel starts with white followed by black and then green. The proper configuration for 2 CPUs would be 8, 16 or 24 DIMMs to maintain a proper load balance across the memory channels. In this video, we will discuss in more depth how to actually load the DIMMs inside your PowerEdge T630 server.

great video! it's probably worth mentioning the T630 18 bay has an extra fan module installed, which you have to remove to operate the clips obscured by it.

imo the T630/T640 18 bay filled a fantastic niche for a fairly quiet server with a lot of drive bays (which is great for NVR use especially). it's a real shame the Dell replaced it with the T550 and nerfed that down to 8LFF+8SFF…

Ever had issue with it defaulting the RAM to 1866mhz? I put in 256GB LRDIMM of 2133mhz (all identical brand model etc 8x32GB) and it kept showing as 1866Mhz in BIOS memory settings. I went in the setup and it was set to max performance and it still registered as 1866Mhz. I had to go in and set a customer profile and manually set it to 2133Mhz and then restart and go back in to the BIOS memory settings and it still shows 1866Mhz. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks for the great video! I currently just got a hold of a T630 8Bay with 4xU.2 bay addon, dual E5-2640 v3, and I threw in 256GB of LRDIMMs and Tesla P4 gpu. Would it make any sense for a simple home lab user to try and upgrade to any of the CPUs you mentioned? At this point it would be a ProxMox server with VMs for TrueNas with Plex, probably Ubuntu Server, pfSense, maybe Windows. My main concern is power consumption. The CPUs are relatively cheap at this point so thats not an issue, just figured my current CPUs would work fine and draw less power than higher models but maybe that's a false assumption.

New Home Backup Server (Dell T640 with 18 20TB Disks)

In this video I create a new backup server from a Dell EMC PowerEdge T640 with 18x 20TB Seagate Exos refurbished drives. Also there’s some more ranting about backups in general. But idk, there are chapters so you can skip to whatever. And it’s not technically a server, in that it doesn’t serve files. It’s really more of a client that takes files from other servers and holds onto them. But I call it a backup server because hardware-wise it’s a server. Anywho, that’s the description. It’s probably not optimal for the YouTube algorithm, but hey, I’m not an influencer even though I have a TikTok account that I don’t use.

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

The Man Who Revolutionized Computer Science With Math

Leslie Lamport revolutionized how computers talk to each other. The Turing Award-winning computer scientist pioneered the field of distributed systems, where multiple components on different networks coordinate to achieve a common objective. (Internet searches, cloud computing and artificial intelligence all involve orchestrating legions of powerful computing machines to work together.) In the early 1980s, Lamport also created LaTeX, a document preparation system that provides sophisticated ways to typeset complex formulas and format scientific documents. In 1989, Lamport invented Paxos, a “consensus algorithm” that allows multiple computers to execute complex tasks; without it, modern computing could not exist. He’s also brought more attention to a handful of problems, giving them distinctive names like the bakery algorithm and the Byzantine Generals Problem. Lamport’s work since the 1990s has focused on “formal verification,” the use of mathematical proofs to verify the correctness of software and hardware systems. Notably, he created a “specification language” called TLA+ (for Temporal Logic of Actions), which employs the precise language of mathematics to prevent bugs and avoid design flaws.
