A 28-year-old man, who was arrested in Rotherham on Saturday, has since been re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Speaking to the Commons on Monday, home secretary Shabana Mahmood said he was not known to counter-terrorism programme Prevent, which supports people who are at risk of becoming involved with terrorism.
She also said that guidance would now be offered by police to MPs following Miss Widdecombe’s death.
Counter-terrorism police have claimed that “new information and evidence” had come to light, which meant they were now leading the investigation, after working alongside Devon and Cornwall Police after Ms Widdecombe was found dead with “serious injuries” in her Haytor residence at 11.40am on Thursday.

Head of national counter-terrorism policing, Laurence Taylor, said: “We are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack.
“Our priority is progressing this investigation quickly, with all the capabilities we have available to us. If anyone has any information, please share it with the police.”
Conservative MPs demand crackdown on social media hate
The death of former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe has reignited concerns over the growing tide of online abuse directed at politicians, prompting fresh calls for the government to force social media companies to do more to curb hateful and violent content.

During a debate in parliament, MPs from across the Conservative Party argued that tech platforms must be held accountable for allowing hostile and abusive posts to flourish online, warning that such rhetoric contributes to a climate that puts elected representatives at risk.
Reform UK MPs Danny Kruger and Lee Anderson, home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf, and deputy leader Richard Tice hold a wreath as they pay their respects near the home of Ann Widdecombe in Haytor, Dartmoor (PA)
Former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith urged the government to take stronger action against what he described as “visceral” and violent language circulating on social media.
“We need to reiterate, and the government and the home secretary needs to specify, to all those social media companies they must do something to close down on the visceral, violent language that some people use, attacking personally,” he said.
Referring to online reactions following Widdecombe’s death, he added that the comments had “shocked” him and warned that this kind of rhetoric was “the root of violence and death.”
Conservative MP Mark Francois echoed those concerns, saying politicians had always needed resilience but that the online environment had become increasingly toxic.
“You always needed a thick skin to come into politics; you now need the hide of a rhino,” he said, arguing that social media companies have a responsibility to reduce the level of hate directed at MPs and their families.
Another Conservative MP, Mark Pritchard, suggested that technology companies had escaped the level of scrutiny faced by traditional media.
“For too long, the mainstream media of this country have been blamed,” he said, arguing that large technology firms possess the resources to do far more to tackle abusive content on their platforms.
Responding to the debate, home secretary Shabana Mahmood acknowledged the concerns raised by MPs and suggested that existing measures may not go far enough.

“Many members have made this point today about the unaccountability of social media platforms for their algorithms and for the type of content that they host on their platforms,” she said. While noting that the government had already taken steps to regulate online platforms, Mahmood added: “I’m sure we will have to go further.”

MPs say they are ‘looking over their shoulders’ after Ann Widdecombe’s death
MPs have spoken about their own safety concerns after the killing of Ann Widdecombe, as one Conservative MP warned parliamentarians were more likely to be killed than members of the army or police.
Responding to a statement in the House of Commons about the former Conservative minister’s killing last week, Tory MP Sir Bernard Jenkin (Harwich and North Essex) recalled the statistic as he added: “None of us want our homes to be turned into fortresses but maybe more people need to be encouraged to put, for example, security gates on the fronts of their houses and to have security cameras watching and recording what is going on, rather than relying on the Ring doorbell.”
Labour MP for Monmouthshire Catherine Fookes said: “I’m sure I was not the only one this weekend who went about my business in the constituency looking over my shoulder more than I normally would, and it’s terrible that it’s the third ex-member of this Parliament to be murdered. But it shouldn’t be like this.”
Ms Fookes added: “It does seem that security fobs, and security in our houses is not really enough.”
Conservative MP Sir Julian Lewis (New Forest East) told MPs he had previously worked with colleagues on greater privacy rules for MPs’ home addresses.

Labour MP Helena Dollimore (Hastings and Rye) said she was concerned about pictures of MPs’ homes being broadcast by media organisations. Sir Julian said: “Whatever else you do, keep your home addresses as private as you possibly can.”
Responding to Ms Fookes, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “There are a number of measures that are taken and that for local policing as well as working with the Parliamentary Security Department there is an offer for all members of Parliament and specific risk assessments.”

PM in waiting Andy Burnham pays tribute to Ann Widdecombe
Prime minister in waiting Andy Burnham has paid tribute to former Tory and Reform heavyweight Ann Widdecombe, saying his and the PLP’s thoughts go out to her friends and family and all who loved her.
He said that “this is a moment to come together, think of her family and ensure the police have the resources and space they need to ensure justice is brought following this appalling act of violence.”
It comes as Mr Burnham addressed MPs during a one-candidate leadership hustings to MPs over Zoom on Monday. The hustings took place as Mr Burnham was confirmed at the next prime minister after receiving an extra 27 nominations from Labour MPs on Monday, taking his total to 349.
Emergency services were on the scene between junctions 45 and 44 near the A64 junction, close to Hazelwood, on Wednesday (July 15).
West Yorkshire Police said the crash was a “damage only collision involving three vehicles”, meaning no one was injured.
The AA first reported the crash at 10.30am, saying the collision had closed two lanes of the A1(M) southbound with drivers facing hour-long delays.

National Highways confirmed at 12.15pm that the road had fully reopened with delays starting to ease.
By 2pm the AA was no longer reporting delays in the area.
The crash came days after a collision elsewhere on the A1(M) caused a “significant spillage” which resulted in delays for drivers, according to National Highways.
One lane of the A1 southbound was closed between junctions 38 for Wakefield and 39 for Doncaster after the crash on Sunday.

The incident on Sunday resulted in 45-minute delays and meant part of the A1 had to be resurfaced, National Highways said.
Now insiders have revealed that Lopez found a potential buyer who paid a ‘substantial’ deposit, only to then withdraw from the deal on Tuesday, via TMZ.

Located in the luxurious Beverly Crest area on the Westside of Los Angeles, the sprawling 46,000 sq ft estate has 12 bedrooms and 24 bathrooms.
The Daily Mail has contacted a representative for Lopez for comment.
Jennifer Lopez remains saddled with the $61 million Los Angeles mansion she and Ben Affleck acquired as their marital home
Advertisement
Online listings are no longer available for the impressive 12-bedroom, 24-bathroom estate, leaving fans to wonder what Lopez and Affleck’s next move might be
Affleck and Lopez bought the house in 2023, months after they tied the knot in August 2022 in the throes of a rekindled romance with its roots in the early 2000s.
By June 2024, when they began trying to sell, Affleck and Lopez were in the midst of a swirl of rumors that their marriage was skidding towards implosion.
That August, the month of the divorce filing, Affleck acquired a $20 million bachelor pad in the Pacific Palisades and promptly decamped there.
The house happened to be blocks from the residence of his first ex-wife Jennifer Garner, with whom he co-parents his children Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 14.
Meanwhile, after her divorce from Affleck was finalized in February 2025, Lopez bought a $21 million property in the Kardashian enclave of Calabasas.
However she not only reportedly kept living in the Beverly Crest mansion she had shared with Affleck, but also subjected it to an extensive remodel.
‘Jennifer is renovating the home to her satisfaction,’ a source exclusively informed the Daily Mail last year. ‘She is spending a lot of money because it’s big: there is the main house, the pool house and a guest house.’
Advertisement
When Lopez and Affleck first listed their property amid the disintegration of their marriage, they set a staggering asking price of $68 million.
There followed a failed escrow, and then a year in which they were unable to secure another buyer, after which they took the house off the market last July.
Although they put the house back up for sale that September, this time brutally marked down to $52 million, they delisted it once again in January.

Sheena McLure, died on December 29 2023 following the incident at the Kilchoan Estate, near Melfort, Argyll and Bute.
The 51-year-old, from Oban, was a housekeeper on the estate and previously worked for the Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh.
A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) is set to be held to examine the circumstances of Sheena’s death and a preliminary hearing will take place at Oban Sheriff Court on Thursday, September 3.
It is expected that the inquiry will focus on the risk assessments and controls relating to the use of unroadworthy off-road vehicles on the estate.

The purpose of an FAI includes determining the cause of death; the circumstances in which the death occurred, and to establish what, if any, reasonable precautions could have been taken, and could be implemented in the future, to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances.
Unlike criminal proceedings, FAIs are inquisitorial in nature, and are used to establish facts rather than to apportion blame.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has lodged a First Notice to begin the court process for the inquiry.
Debbie Carroll from the COPFS, said: “The death of Sheena McLure occurred while in the course of her employment and as such a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory.

“The lodging of the First Notice enables FAI proceedings to commence under the direction of the Sheriff.
“Ms McLure’s family will continue to be kept informed of significant developments as court proceedings progress.”

EXCLUSIVE: Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has revealed who he wants to become the next Doctor as he opens up whether the show is set to come back
14:55, 15 Jul 2026Updated 14:56, 15 Jul 2026
Former Time Lord Peter Capaldi says the next Doctor Who should be a complete unknown.
The sci-fi series faces an uncertain future after the Christmas special was axed for the second year in a row, while screenwriter and TV producer Russell T Davies announced his departure in June.
Capaldi, 68, who played the Doctor from 2013 to 2017 said there’s no doubt that that the show will return but bosses need to rethink their plan for the next leading star.
Peter revealed he’d love to see an unknown actor step into the role: “I think it would be lovely. I’d like to see someone who nobody knew, rather than us all plucking names on people that we’ve seen. I’d like to see something that’s a totally unknown quantity.”
The role is vacant after Ncuti Gatwa, the fifteenth doctor, who appeared in the series from 2023 until 2025, quit. Viewers saw Gatwa’s Doctor regenerate into Billie Piper, who previously played companion Rose Tyler to Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant’s incarnations of The Doctor in the last episode.
However, since the Christmas special has been cancelled it’s unclear if Billie is set to play the next doctor, or if this was a red herring for fans, so the future of the series is very much up in the air.
When asked if there were any names he could think of who would impress in the role, he admitted there were “lots of names” but it would be “inappropriate” for him to throw any into the mix publicly.
With the announcement that the Christmas special would not go ahead, Russell T Davies also announced his decision to leave Doctor Who once again. “And so GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show, as the BBC announces it’s putting the show out to tender,” he said at the time.
This led to speculation that Doctor Who would be cancelled entirely, this rumour Peter was happy to shut down.
“Oh, I think it’s coming back.. It is happening, and I look forward to seeing it,” he confirmed to the Mirror.
Revealing the perks of being the Doctor, Peter said: “I mean, it’s just an amazing job. You get to go into work every day and blow up dogs or flying tires, and also when kids meet you when you’re in the heat of it and you’re in the middle of being Doctor Who, they’re meeting Doctor Who, and that is an extraordinary privilege to be on the other side of that. Their eyes widen and they look at you as if as if you’re Santa Claus or something, and it’s incredible.”
In recent years the actor, who broke out in BBC political comedy The Thick of It, has ventured into other areas including music and even performed at Glastonbury Festival in 2025,
He joined fellow Scots Franz Ferdinand on stage to sing their smash hit Take Me Out. He revealed this was the first time he’d ever attended Glastonbury and still feels like a ‘dream’.
“Every time I think about it, it’s like a dream really. I’m not really sure this really happened to have it in my head. It’s just my current dream. Cold breeze on the stage. Everything was harsh and quite a setting. I mean I was really quite frightened because I never. I’ve been to Glastonbury before.”
He described his music as a passion project: ” Well, it’s really something that I’m doing for fun. It’s not about trying to get into the charts or change my career.”
For that reason he can stay detached, without concerns about chart performance: “It doesn’t matter what happens to my music. You know what? If people like it, that’s fine. If they don’t like it, that’s fine. Also, because I’m not doing it in order to claw my way into using industry, I’m doing it because I love this.”

Police have arrested a man for threatening to shoot and kill Nigel Farage.
The man was arrested on Tuesday in London after a post on X warned the Reform UK leader: ‘I am going to shoot you in the head if you win.’
The suspect is understood to have described himself as a terrorist on social media.
The arrest for the threat on Mr Farage’s life came just days after former MP and Reform spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe was killed in a ‘targeted attack’.

He revealed yesterday that he gets 30 death threats a week. Reform UK said it has recorded 1,577 threats against Mr Farage since February, including 597 death threats.
The figures include multiple threats from a number of individuals whom the party believes are ‘fixated’ with the idea of killing him.
The post on X was made on May 8 on the day of the local elections, but the suspect was only arrested yesterday – almost two months later and six days after Miss Widdecombe was found dead in the kitchen of her remote Dartmoor bungalow.
According to The Telegraph, his profile shows a picture of a British Asian man.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police told Mr Farage this morning a male had been arrested on suspicion of sending a threatening communication.
He has since been released on bail.

Mr Farage told The Telegraph: ‘This is the first time the police have ever proactively acted on a social media post, and I hope they are looking at the other three or four hundred similar posts from this year alone.’
The post was reported to Scotland Yard’s parliamentary liaison and investigations team by the Parliament’s security information and risk analysis service, according to the newspaper.
Reform has compiled a dossier of hundreds of threatening messages received by Mr Farage, many of them posted on X.

They include 597 death threats – equal to an average of four a day or almost 30 a week.
One, posted on June 23, stated: ‘Execute the stinking traitor Nigel Farage. TODAY.’
Another, sent two days later by a persistent individual, said: ‘Get the f*** out of Wales before I just kill Nigel Farage… you can die at any f***ing moment.’
A third sent on July 2 accompanied by an image of a noose, said: ‘In 1916, traitors like you would have ended your days early in the Tower of London.’

One message, sent from a suspected neo-Nazi account, said Mr Farage would ‘get executed’ as a ‘race traitor’.
This morning, Reform UK’s home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf called for the budget for MPs’ safety to be increased to £100m, with a bodyguard for every one of them.

The Reform leader claimed today that he was initially told by Keir Starmer that Miss Widdecombe died during a ‘burglary gone wrong’.
He said he was also told the same by the chief constable of Devon and Cornwall Police James Vaughan in the aftermath of her body being discovered last week.
On Monday it was revealed that counter-terrorism police are now leading the investigation into her death at her Dartmoor bungalow, and have arrested a 28-year-old man.
Mr Farage and other Reform figures have used the killing to put the spotlight on the threat to their safety.

Speaking to Talk TV today, Mr Farage said: ‘I spoke to the chief constable of Devon and Cornwall police three times. I spoke to the prime minister as well and those calls took place over Friday and Saturday and they both told me it’s a burglary that’s gone wrong.
‘I said, no, it is not. A burglar does not park his car on your drive and walk into the house. A burglar parks in a lay-by down the road or has a getaway driver.
‘And I went to Dartmoor on Saturday and I said, I have no doubt this is a premeditated murder. I received tons of abuse for saying it but sadly it’s proved that I’m right. It was obvious.’
Later, he insisted to The Sun he was not trying to ‘point the finger’ at the PM, saying it had been a very ‘courteous’ conversation.

Sentencing the men, Judge Christine Henson KC said: ‘Each of you participated in an entirely predatory and callous attack on a female separated from her friends after what had been a fun night out for her.
‘You each treated her with contempt, and you each played a role in degrading her in the most appalling way.’
Egyptian national Alshafe and Iranian national Ahmadi were jailed for 21 years each, while Egyptian national Al-Danasurt was sentenced to 18 years and six months.

Prosecutor Hanna Llewellyn-Waters KC described the men as ‘devoid of humanity’ and their treatment of the woman was ‘entirely predatory, callous and contemptuous’.
She described the impact on the woman as ‘extreme’.
In her victim impact statement, the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, added: ‘They took something from me that night I’m afraid I will never get back. To not take accountability for their actions (is) like sticking a knife in and twisting it again.’

She told the court when she closes her eyes she sees the man filming it and them all ‘laughing at me’.
‘My skin crawls. No matter how hard I scrub it, I still feel dirty,’ she added.
Alshafe and Ahmadi were found guilty of two counts of rape by jurors, while Al-Danasurt was found guilty of four counts of rape as a secondary party by encouraging and filming the attack.
The three defendants knew each other were living at Home Office-approved hotel accommodation for asylum seekers in Lower Beeding, near Horsham, West Sussex.

Ahmadi and Alshafe met on a small boat from France arriving in the UK on June 19, 2025, while Alshafe and Al-Danasurt, who arrived in the UK on October 11, 2024, were roommates at the hotel.
The three got ready at the hotel before getting a bus into Brighton on the night of October 3.
A Snapchat video shows them in front of a mirror at around 7.30pm at the hotel, with Ahmadi sorting a durag – a close-fitting cloth tied around the top of the head – on Al-Danasurt, who gestures to the camera and smiles, while being filmed by Alshafe.
During the night out, the friends went to a bar and nightclub on the beach where Alshafe chatted to a woman using Google Translate about his hopes to marry a woman and have children and get citizenship in the UK.

The prosecution suggested he had been a ‘nasty little predator’ that night who had been rejected by several women and was ‘on the prowl’ with the co-defendants.

After the attack, the men returned to their hotel by bus and had a barbecue later that evening, around the time the woman was waiting to be medically examined.
During the trial, all three men gave evidence through translators to deny the crimes.
Ms Llewellyn-Waters said their accounts provided ‘clear and chilling insight into a wholly warped mindset’ and a ‘total lack of remorse’.
Alshafe and Ahmadi claimed the encounter was consensual and that the woman had approached them on the seafront, kissed and touched them both, said something about sex and took them both to the beach.

The court saw footage of the woman falling down while walking with Ahmadi and Alshafe on the seafront.
Al-Danasurt claimed to jurors that he had tried to stop the attack by filming it, which prosecutor Ms Llewellyn-Waters said was a ‘pack of lies’.
The videos shown to jurors showed Alshafe smiling and sticking his tongue out during the attack, as well as slapping the woman in the face.
Ministers have vowed to deport the men after they were sentenced.

On Wednesday the prosecution said the sentencing court should make its decision on the risk posed by the defendants ‘without regards to possibility that one day a defendant may be deported’.
