Mrs Brown’s Boys star Brendan O’Carroll’s ‘racist’ Tyler Perry joke resurfaces after BBC halts show

A clip showing Mrs Brown’s Boys star Brendan O’Carroll making a “racist” jibe about American actor Tyler Perry has resurfaced as the show faces scrutiny over its “jokes” about race.

O’Carroll, the 69-year-old Irish actor who plays the title character in the long-running BBC comedy, recently apologised for making a “clumsy” joke where a “racial term was implied” during rehearsals for the forthcoming Christmas specials.

The BBC halted filming to launch an investigation after the remark was flagged to bosses. O’Carroll then said he “deeply regrets the clumsy line”.

This wouldn’t be the first time that the comedian has come under fire for his remarks about race. While appearing on The One Show in 2022 alongside Perry, O’Carroll said that Mrs Brown’s Boys had never had anyone of Perry’s “colour” feature on the show before.

O’Carroll had a guest role as Mrs Brown in Perry’s Netflix film A Madea Homecoming. As Madea, Perry plays an older woman.

When asked if he thought his fellow guest could feature on Mrs Brown’s Boys, O’Carroll responded: “He’s very expensive and so far we haven’t had anybody his colour in there,” the Irish actor continued, pointing at his face on the word “colour”.

O’Carroll said that he would love the actor to appear on the show or for the pair to make another film together, while Perry laughed at the comment while repeating the words: “Nobody my colour.”

“Times have changed, change the world,” Perry. “Diversity rules, here we go.”

The One Show viewers were shocked by O’Carroll’s comment, which was described by one viewer as “offensive at best”.

“Brendan O’Caroll just made a racist remark on the one show and not one person called him out. Shame on you BBC,” said one viewer, as another added: “I misunderstood or was that blatant racism on a prime time @BBCOne show #wtf.” The Independent has contacted representatives for O’Carroll and Perry.

The remarks are in line with the tone of the Perry-directed comedy, which features several jokes about race and ethnicity.

In one scene, Mrs Brown greets Madea by crossing her arms and saying “Wakanda forever”, in reference to the Black Panther motto from the Marvel films.

Another clip shows the actor at dinner with Perry’s character, where she says “I’m Mrs Brown”, with one of the co-stars replying: “I’m a brown too.”

The specific “racial term”, used last Wednesday (9 October) by O’Carroll on set, has not been disclosed.

The BBC investigated the incident and halted rehearsals, which have since resumed at the corporation’s Pacific Quay studios in Glasgow. It is understood that the specials are still scheduled to air on BBC One this festive season in their usual Christmas Day and New Year’s Day slots.

A BBC spokesperson said: “While we don’t comment on individuals, the BBC is against all forms of racism, and we have robust processes in place should issues ever arise.”

Mrs Brown’s Boys has been a controversial presence on TV Christmas schedules for many years, and typically provokes strong reaction from viewers and critics.

The Independent’s Nick Hilton gave the previous New Year’s Day special a zero-star review, writing: “Observing that it’s unfunny is like observing that the sea is wet.”

The show is still popular, with more than four million tuning in last Christmas, but there have still been calls to reassess the programming in recent years, since critics say it is outdated, nauseating and unfunny.

In June, Jon Petrie, the BBC director of comedy, did not respond when he was asked whether he found Mrs Brown’s Boys funny.

At an audience Q&A for the BBC Comedy Showcase, an audience member asked Petrie: “Can I ask, as comedy chief, do you actually find Mrs Brown’s Boys funny? And would you watch it if you didn’t have to?”

Petrie stayed silent but laughed awkwardly. The journalist who asked the question said: “I’ll take that as a ‘no’, then.”

BGT fans left stunned after judges hit THREE golden buzzers on first day of auditions and KSI arrives in private jet

IT’S all kicking off at the Britain’s Got Talent auditions after the golden buzzer was hit three times and new judge KSI casually glided in via a private jet.

New BGT judge KSI, who is standing in for Bruno Tonioli while he’s on Dancing With The Stars, wowed onlookers with his super-luxury entrance.

The star, 31, was seen stepping off the jet and into a waiting vehicle as he made his way to his debut audition.

The YouTuber was wearing a black and white bandana with a matching monochrome sports top.

Actress Amanda Holden, 53, posed for a selfie with Simon CowellAlesha Dixon and KSI as production kicked off on the ITV show at the Blackpool Winter Gardens.

The official Instagram page for BGT posted a short video of Simon sat at the judges’ desk. He said: “I have just pressed my golden buzzer for a really special person.

“It’s the best feeling when you press that for someone who really deserves it.”

KSI, aka Olajide Olayinka Williams Olatunji, has been given his very own golden buzzer for his stint on the panel.

While he’s only there for three of the five first round audition days, he’ll still get the same opportunity as Simon, Amanda and Alesha to send a contestant straight into the live final.

This could indicate that KSI will make a reappearance later in the series to watch his choice in action.

A source said: “Bosses were keen for KSI to appear much like a full-time judge would, given he’s due to stand in for a number of days.

“It means there will be one more Golden Buzzer act this year, with the remaining judges and hosts Ant and Dec also given an opportunity to press it.

“It will no doubt make the finals more exciting, to see which judge is best at picking a winner.”

An audience member noted: “I went to the first show today and there was only one golden buzzer pressed by Simon. I don’t know if there was any in the 2nd show this evening but they aren’t easy on the golden buzzers so I can’t see two more.”

Another stated: “There were two more this evening. KSI had a singer and Amanda had a kid playing the guitar.”

A third user penned: “There were two in the evening show last night in Blackpool. I was there!”

Other gobsmacked fans commented: “Three golden buzzers in one day???”

Another fan praised: “Definitely deserved it. Was so good!”

One user asked: “Wait, but does Bruno get a buzzer when he gets back or was his buzzer for KSI?”

KSI said when he first announced his new role on the panel: “I’m so excited to be a guest judge for BGT. When I got the call up, I couldn’t believe it.

“I remember watching old BGT episodes and going from being amazed to laughing my a**e off.

“I’m buzzing to see all the fresh new talent, and I’ll be sure to leave a mark.”

BGT starts a four-month run in February 2025, with live semi-finals on Saturday nights replacing nightly episodes across one week.

I’m a Celebrity: Who is on the line-up for 2024 series

I’m a Celebrity: Who is on the line-up for 2024 series

As the end of the year approaches, another batch of stars are set to enter the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! jungle.

The ITV reality show has been on the air since 2000, with winners including Tony Blackburn, Stacey Solomon, Jill Scott and last year’s victor Sam Thompson.

In recent years, I’m a Celebrity has been plagued with controversy for signing up two controversial politicians: former health secretary Matt Hancock in 2022 and Nigel Farage in 2023, which appeared to lead to a downturn in ratings.

Currently, it seems like bosses don’t have anyone quite so contentious waiting in the wings; in the past few weeks, reports have surfaced about which stars could be facing their fears in the Australian jungle.

Below is a rundown of the nine stars who might be on this year’s series.

Coleen Rooney

Coleen Rooney has reportedly signed up to appear on this year’s series. The wife of former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is said to have secured the biggest deal in the show’s history, which would surpass that of Farage and presenter Noel Edmonds with a fee of over £1.5m. “I’m a Celeb bosses have pulled off a huge coup getting Coleen for the jungle this year and the team are thrilled to have her on board,” a source told The Sun. “Coleen has a huge fanbase and she won massive plaudits for her classy handling of the Wagatha Christie case. She’s excited to show fans a different side to her and prove she can survive without her creature comforts.”

Ally McCoist

This year’s star from the world of football – following in the footsteps of Harry Redknapp, Ian Wright and winner Jill Scott – could be Ally McCoist. The former Rangers pro, who played for Scotland, is now known by many for his commentary on ITV – but it seems he might be heading into the jungle two years after reportedly backing out. An insider told The Sun: “Ally has such a huge fan base thanks to his years of commentating and punditry, plus his long stint on A Question of Sport. He’d be great for the jungle – as his wife and kids have been telling him forever – so everyone is really hopeful that this will be the year.”

Tulisa Contostavlos

One of this year’s biggest rumours is N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos, who was also once a judge on The X Factor. An insider suggested to The Sun that Contostavlos’s booking was inspired by a recent N-Dubz tour, which “introduced her to a younger generation, especially through platforms like TikTok”. They added: “Tulisa’s diverse career makes her a strong contender for I’m a Celebrity because she appeals to a wide audience. ITV is particularly excited about her new following among 16 to 24-year-olds, and hopes the deal is finalised soon.”

Jane Moore

The second Loose Women star who is reportedly poised to follow in the footsteps of fellow panellists Janet Street-Porter, Frankie Bridge and Charlene White is Jane Moore, who first appeared on the ITV panel show in 1999. he has been a regular panellist since 2013 and is rumoured to be up for entering the jungle following a split from her husband of 20 years.

Alan Halsall

Alan Halsall

Coronation Street star Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs, had an I’m a Celebrity near-miss in 2023. He was rumoured to be a part of the line-up but was reportedly forced to withdraw after suffering a knee injury; the photo he shared of himself from his hospital bed essentially ruled himself out of appearing. It’s a likely bet, then, that Halsall has been drafted in for the new series.

There are two Loose Women stars being tipped to join I’m a Celebrity this year – and one became a wift favourite to appear after it was reported she had withdrawn from participating in Strictly Come Dancing due to the rehearsal room scandal that hit the BBC show earlier this year. GK Barry – real name Grace Keeling – would be a hit with the youngsters considering she had a huge following on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube

Olivia Atwood

Love Island star Olivia Atwood might finally be able to re-enter the jungle after being forced to withdraw from the competition in 2022 after just one day. Atwood left the series “as a precautionary measure” in order to “undergo some medical checks” and, when asked if she would appear the following year, she ruled herself out due to scheduling conflicts. However, Atwood could very possibly have kept this winter free to finally complete her tenure in the jungle.

Tommy Fury

One star who is sure to be top of producers’ wish list is Tommy Fury. The former Love Island star and boxer, who recently split from his fiancée Molly Mae Hague, has just released a memoir he will undoubtedly want to promote ahead of Christmas. Fury has now fanned the flames of speculation after dodging a question about his possible I’m a Celebrity involvement on Heart Radio.

When asked if he’ll appear, he said: “Listen, a lot of things in my life is like a rollercoaster in a minute. There are so many things I might do. You know, could he be doing this? Could he be doing that? I don’t know what I’m doing this afternoon. I mean, I just take literally an hour at a time, so I don’t know. There’s a lot of things going on in my life right now. So, I’m not sure on anything.”

An ITV spokesperson told The Independent: “Any names suggested for I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! are just speculation.”

Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party review – 80s solid-rock nostalgia fest is a trip | Film

Published

on

A king of AM radio in the US and stalwart of the Spotify playlists of anyone with a taste for solid, four-square old-school rock, Tom Petty died seven years ago this month – but his estate must surely be earning royalties every minute of every day from hits such as American Girl, Refugee and I Won’t Back Down. It’s perhaps strange that for all his musical success he has less of an afterlife as a physical entity, but this sweet documentary may alleviate that a little.

It was shot in 1982-83 around the time Petty and his band the Heartbreakers had just finished their album Long After Dark and were starting to tour again. A prismatic collage of archive clips, interview snippets and goofing off, the package was directed by Doug Dowdle, Phil Savenick and Cameron Crowe. The last was then an ace reporter for Rolling Stone who appears on camera here interviewing Petty well before he would transition into becoming a director of features including Say Anything, Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky. Somehow the 16mm reels of this film were lost somewhere along the way and have recently been discovered, remastered and supplemented by unseen extra footage that was never shown when the film was originally shown on MTV in the 80s. So there’s a lot to get nostalgic about here for Petty, Heartbreakers and even Crowe fans, as well as anyone who grooves to vintage LA 80s fashion. Petty’s skinny-jeans-tucked-into-cowboy-boots look is certainly a trip, as are the fluffy mullets on the band.

Of course, the music is the main attraction and that’s served well, with long chunks of performance footage that aren’t sliced and diced as much as they would be in a contemporary rock doc. There’s also a juicy clip of Petty almost getting mauled at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco by over-enthusiastic fans who pull him off the stage, which just goes to underscore how much tighter security is these days. Ah, the good old days.

Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party is in cinemas on 17 October and 20 October.

Secret Amazon: Into the Wild saw the adventurer and her indigenous team embark on a 50-day expedition.

They attempted to cross the virgin Amazon rainforest entirely on foot as they fought for survival.

From venomous snakes to black caimans, the group faced relentless dangers as they took up the huge challenge.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, Lucy, 31, admitted that she wants to do more series of the show.

When asked if there were more expeditions in the pipeline for Channel 4, the star responded: “I think so. That’s all I can say.

“But yeah, definitely. I’m in this for the long run … I feel like this is just the beginning.”

During filming, Lucy admitted that she was fearful for her life “multiple times.”

But she also implied that she was even more fearful for the team that was guiding her.

“Truthfully, I was actually more scared of my team because, you know, there’s four guys with me. And, you know, we can try and be as safe as possible and follow everything.

“But at the end of the day, there’s a lot of luck comes down to it. You might be the best snake spotter or be able to tell what branch is good to stand on what’s not.

“But when you haven’t had much food and you’re tired and your skin is falling apart, then your senses do go down a little bit.

“Your pupils and your eyes are just so like ready for anything. So you sleep.”

Lucy also opened up about a tragic incident that happened just as filming was getting underway.

She shared: “It was mammoth to plan and just a few months in my mentor, Ian Craddock, he suddenly died.

Channel 4’s best competition shows

Channel 4 boasts a number impressive competition shows, but which ones are really the best?

Four in a Bed

  • Reality competition show Four in a Bed has been airing on Channel 4 since 2010. It follows four couples as they take turns to stay at each others B&Bs and hotels, rating their stays along the way. The couple with the establishment voted best value for money are the winners.

Come Dine With Me

  • Come Dine With Me has been staple British viewing since 2005, providing some outrageous telly moments over the years. Like Four in a Bed, the series moves around to different properties as it follows four contestants as they each host a (supposedly) gourmet dinner party for each other. After each dinner the guests score the host out of 10, will the winner being revealed on the final evening.

The Great British Bake Off

  • Another national treasure, The Great British Bake Off welcomes a group of 12 amateur bakers to put their culinary skills to the test with Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith judging their efforts. One contestant is eliminated each week until the final three face off in the last week.

Bake Off: The Professionals

  • Bake Off: The Professionals puts a twist on GBBO, pitting two teams of professional pastry chefs against each other in every episode. It’s up to judges Benoit Blin and Cherish Finden to determine who has what it takes to make it through to the final.

“And he was a good friend of my team’s as well.

“It was like, well, is it even more foolish to continue on doing this or should we do it in his name?

“Then Anders, a good friend who also was friends with him, like came on board.

“It was like his first massive project to be, you know, on the sidelines, organising the resupplies and stuff.

“And yeah, it all came together like that. So it was a big, big project in the making.”

‘It’s pathetic’ says Big Brother legend Aisleyne as she slams stars threatening to quit and wades in on ‘cringe’ row

ROWS and rule breaking plunged the Big Brother house into chaos last night – with TWO stars already threatening to quit the ITV show.

Ali’s bags were packed and her closest pal Daze also was ready to walk just nine days into the social experiment series.

Big Brother legend and The Sun columnist Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace summed up the threats as “pathetic” and slammed the housemates for their snowflake behaviour.

She also waded into drama between Marcello and Sarah after his “cringe” comments about women.

Read on for Aisleyne’s hilarous take on the latest drama!

CLASH OF THE TITANS

Ali and Khaled had a painful chat

Last night we saw yet again Ali and Khaled going head to head. It’s like a clash of the titans, it’s like an alpha clash.

They’re both very alpha. To be fair, yet again I feel like Khaled really won the argument.

Because Ali didn’t have control, and because she didn’t, she was like at the end of the argument, I’m going to walk out. I’m going to leave.

What? Girl, you’re a psychiatrist! You’re meant to be better than this, understand emotions.

You have single handedly put me off ever getting a therapist, and I probably need one!

QUITTERS

It's hard in the house - but I lasted three months!

5

It’s hard in the house – but I lasted three months!

It wasn’t only Ali that wanted to leave last night, it was Daze as well.

They both went into the Diary Room and said they were considering leaving.

I think it’s really pathetic and I don’t understand from two very strong females.

Big Brother’s Aisleyne says the knives are out as she predicts Khaled’s downfall – and says ‘bosses are missing a trick’

I mean, one ties herself to motorways and one is a psychiatrist.

People don’t understand just how hard it is in that house. I feel like I need a medal, because I lasted three months, and these lot want to walk after two weeks? Pathetic.

I’m not a psychologist but if I was to take a guess Ali has a lot of control over everything in her life outside the house and in the house she is not in control.

Lily still continues to be good entertainment. When she’s happy, she’s happy and when she’s sad you know about it. She’s like a human emoji.

She’s like marmite. Love her or hate her, she’s great entertainment.

Are we about to see the weirdest romance of all time? Who? Marcello and Baked Potato…

IT STINKS

Marcello has gone too far

5

Marcello has gone too far

Has Sarah slayed the lyrical cringe bag that is Marcello? Time will tell.

I think she is standing on strong ground with him, they had a face to face.

Who would have known that they were so close, like brother and sister? Like besties. But she stood up to him. He said something cruel and vile, that she smelled like a period.

That to me, is pushing your jokes too far. He reminds me of a modern day Carry On film, your jokes are not OK, they’re not acceptable.

And it’s really cringe. Show us your personality without having to be sexual.

RULE IT OUT

These lot this year don’t stop breaking the rules! It’s two weeks in guys. Get a grip.

Last night we saw Lily and Martha getting sent to jail in the garden.

And Martha said, I don’t care, I’m going to carry on talking about if someone has nominated me.

Seriously girl, you’re just going to make enemies, get the hot water taken off the house, and it’s going to be a mess. Grow up.

Great British Bake Off contestant writes letter hoping he hasn’t ‘let anyone down’ following elimination

The fourth person from this season of The Great British Bake Off has left the tent with Mike receiving an outpouring of support from viewers after penning an emotional letter about his time on the Channel 4 show.

The 29-year-old farm manager was eliminated after Caramel Week, with Georgie being named as Star Baker by judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, who recently revealed that she doesn’t actually watch the show.

Mike, who is also an advocate for the LGBT+ community in the farming industry, was as a firm favourite among viewers and the other contestant, said that “it was my time to go” in response to his exit. “I feel like the quality of what everyone else is doing is just breathtaking. I’m going to miss everyone,” he added.

Fellow baker, Sumayah, said that she was relieved to be staying on “but I’m sad at the same time – Mike was genuinely the heart of the group. He’s been a good friend.”

Mike has since written a lengthy letter about Bake Off, which has been shared on the show’s official X/Twitter account, adding that he had hoped that he hadn’t “let anyone down”.

His letter said: “What can I say but thank you!!! Thank you to every single person involved in putting together this magnificent show and thank you a million times over for including me in it!! Every person I have met throughout this experience has been among the most glorious people I have ever had the good fortune to know.

I have been made to feel welcomed and supported at every single second! Bake Off is so tremendously special and its joy and laughter and positivity has boosted me for years as a dedicated fan! Now, to be part of the family and part of Bake Off history is a privilege that I will cherish and treasure forever! I have also made 11 spectacularly wonderful lifelong friends – how can I possibly express my gratitude for that!!

“As for Alison, the love, laughter, and hugs are even better than I ever dared to hope! Thank you to both Alison and Noel for the unending support and to Paul and Prue for more brilliant feedback than I ever dreamed of! This whole experience has been pure magic! From showcasing my favourite queer books to celebrating British farming and farm produce in every bake, I am so proud of everything I have achieved!

“I just hope that I haven’t let anyone down and that everyone has enjoyed watching a fraction as much as I have enjoyed being here! P.S. You have my heart!! Sending oodles of love, hugs and thanks, Mike.”

When sharing Mike’s letter, the Bake Off account added: “Oh Mike, you have done the very opposite of letting anyone down and you should be so proud.”

Many viewers have since echoed these sentiments, with many sad to see Mike go.

“Ah I’ll miss Mike. And I hope he now knows he hasn’t let anyone down. Far from it!,” said one fan.

Another wrote: “Aw, how lovely is Mike! So sad he’s gone but he can hold his head up high and be proud of himself.”

A third added: “No matter where you are just know that you’re loved and have it a little easier for someone who is struggling with their coming out.”
