Marcus Rashford ‘dream’ Barcelona admission speaks volumes after bitter Man Utd exit

Marcus Rashford is enjoying his time on loan with Barcelona, having left boyhood club Manchester United under a cloud in the summer following a falling out with Ruben Amorim

Marcus Rashford has admitted he only ever wanted to play for Manchester United as a child, but is now appreciative of the new experiences Barcelona is bringing him. Rashford joined Barca on a season-long loan in July after falling out of favour with Ruben Amorim at United and is enjoying life at a new club.

The England striker was placed in the ‘bomb squad’ at United alongside fellow unwanted players Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho. He was the first player to secure a move elsewhere, landing on his feet at Barca, the club he had angled for all summer.

The 28-year-old has settled well in Hansi Flick’s side, contributing six goals and 11 assists in 21 games so far. Barcelona have the option of making the move permanent for €35million (£30.3m) and, having fallen out with Amorim, Rashford has made it clear he would like that to become a reality.

His mindset was shown in an answer during an interview with BBC Sport. Asked whether he would’ve thought when he was younger that he’d have played for two big clubs like United and Barca, he replied: “It’s crazy. My dream when I was young was to just play for United. And then you don’t know what’s going to happen in your life.

“I feel very lucky and fortunate that this is one of the places that I’ve been able to play for. Because it’s a huge club, a club I’ve always admired as a young boy – my favourite club outside of England. It’s amazing football that they play here, like lots of football fans know. To be able to wear this shirt is a tremendous feeling.”

Rashford spoke in glowing terms about his new home in Catalonia, where he is learning Spanish and trying to throw himself into the culture. “It’s different, but it’s a great learning curve for me,” he said.

“And even little things, I’ve not done it completely yet, but learning the language and stuff like that, learning the culture, it’s all enjoyable for me.”

He added: “It’s a new language of football. I’ve always been, like many people in the world, an admirer of Spanish football. To play for the biggest club in Spain is a huge honour. I’m looking forward to playing more games here, just doing my best and try to help the team to win.”

Rashford has been thriving on the pressure attached to playing for Barcelona. He came off the bench and provided an assist for Jules Kounde in the 2-1 comeback win over Frankfurt on Tuesday, earning rave reviews from the Spanish media. Barca are four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga and are favourites for the title following five straight league wins.
