Anthony Davis says he has recovered from being poked in the left eye by Toronto’s Jakob Poeltl, and his latest eye injury still hasn’t persuaded him to wear protective goggles.

The Los Angeles Lakers ‘ star big man said Tuesday that he will play Wednesday night against Memphis. Davis brushed off the potential impact of the injury, even though his left eye was noticeably discolored after practice at the Lakers’ training complex.

“I’ll go about my day and do what I need to do,” Davis said. “Next up is getting more sleep.”

Davis said he has “no idea” if his latest injury is another corneal abrasion. He had that injury last March after getting poked in a game against Golden State but didn’t miss any time.

“A couple of scratches in my eye,” Davis said. “As far as the medical term and all that, I’m not 100% sure, but I’m cleared to play.”

Each time Davis gets poked in the face by opponents, he is asked whether he will consider wearing goggles or protective glasses like similarly dominant big men Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Amare Stoudemire. Before the usual question was even completed Tuesday, Davis replied: “No.”

“I don’t want to, and the doctor said I didn’t have to,” Davis said. “Now if it gets to a point where doctor orders are to (wear goggles) … .”

Davis said he wore goggles for about three years when he was young. He tried wearing goggles again briefly during the Lakers’ championship run in the Florida pandemic bubble in 2020 but quickly gave up.

Davis got hurt midway through the third quarter against Toronto on Sunday night while making a sensational one-handed block of a dunk attempt by Poeltl, who accidentally clocked Davis in the face with his off hand. Davis didn’t return to the game, but the Lakers still surged to a 123-103 victory over the Raptors.

Davis is off to an outstanding start to the regular season, sparking early MVP talk for the 31-year-old. He is second in the NBA with 31.2 points per game, along with 10.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.0 blocks for the Lakers (6-4).

The Football Association has launched its own investigation into the video that appears to show Premier League referee David Coote using foul language to describe former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Coote has already been suspended by refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) pending a full investigation.

BBC Sport has also been told the 42-year-old has been withdrawn from an international commitment this week.

However, the nature of Coote’s alleged comments are also attracting the attention of the FA.

One of the comments cites Klopp’s German nationality and FA rules state nationality is one of the references that can lead to an aggravated breach of its rules.

“We are aware of the matter, and we are investigating it,” said the FA in a statement.

The video allegedly showing Coote making derogatory comments about Klopp was circulated on social media.

It has not been verified by the BBC and it is unclear when it was filmed.

A source told the BBC that PGMOL’s inquiry is treating the video as genuine.

Coote is one of the Premier League’s most-experienced officials and has been refereeing matches in the top flight since 2018.

The video being shared appears to refer to a Premier League match that Coote officiated between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which finished 1-1.

Klopp criticised Coote after the match, saying the referee failed to give fouls for challenges made on Liverpool’s players.

In the video the man alleged to be Coote says Klopp had “a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown”. He calls Klopp arrogant and also swears several times when referring to him.

The video shows him with another man and lasts for just over a minute. The circumstances of how the video emerged are unclear.

PGMOL says it will not be making further comment on the case until its investigation is completed.

Bonnyrigg have been deducted six points, warned about their future conduct and now must provide details by 31 January of funding arrangements and a programme of works to allow pitch levelling works next summer.

It means Bonnyrigg drop four places from fourth to third bottom, still two points above Clyde and Forfar Athletic.

Appealing for donations, the club said on X: “The Rosey Posey, the heartbeat to our community, needs your help.

“We are fundraising to help towards levelling the pitch as well as improve draining, etc., to ensure compliance with league membership.”

Bonnyrigg won promotion to League 2 in 2022 after winning the Lowland League and finished eighth of the 10 teams last season.
