George Clarke has jumped to the defence of Amber Davies as she’s received endless hate, which has been ‘tougher than usual’
George Clarke has jumped to the defence of one of his Strictly Come Dancing co-stars after they received hate online from fans of the show. The dancing competition is one of the most popular shows on the BBC and attracts a large audience who feel extremely passionate about the programme.
This often means many of them take to social media to share their opinions, and this can unfortunately include some very hateful comments. After yet another intense dance off on Sunday, December 7, which featured Love Island’s Amber Davies, fans of the show have been especially hard on the reality star.
Whilst speaking on his Useless Hotline podcast with his co-host Max Balegde, George hit back at trolls who have been rude to Amber following her “unbelievable dance.” For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter
George said: “It’s a dance competition, yes, but the the fact there’s a public vote automatically means that it’s also down to you. People being like, ‘oh, the public vote shouldn’t be the way it is, it should just be a dance competition. Bottom the leaderboard goes’.
“It’s like, okay, yeah, I appreciate that. But the reason they’ve got it being celebs in the first place is because they’re the draw for people coming in, and the public will only continue watching if the people they want to see are still there.”
His co-host, Max added: “Go to a dance competition.”
George continued: “Yeah! Well, this isn’t even me trying to sort of defend myself. I’ve seen the Tweets. I don’t really care. I live on the internet, I know what people are like, and I can deal with it. So don’t worry about that if you’re worried about that. But I think just to send people hate for absolutely no reason is just insane.
“Amber produced an unbelievable dance. Ended up having to do it again in a dance off. Produced it, if anything better, and is then getting hate, I think it’s just unnecessary.”
Here, George is referencing last week’s dance off which featured Amber and her partner Nikita Kuzmin who competed against Emmerdale’s Lewis Cope and his partner Katya Jones. Ultimately, the latter were eliminated from the competition after the judges decided to send the pair home.
Throughout the competition both Amber and Lewis have received criticism for their musical theatre/performance backgrounds. Following the actor’s departure Amber received an influx of hate from fans of the show on social media and said that this week had been “tougher than usual.”
Max added: “Firstly, as someone who was literally there, my mouth was agape for both Lewis’ and Amber’s dances. To me, they were some of the most incredible things I’d ever seen in my entire life.”
George continued: “It’s a dance show, yes, but you’ve got to take that with a bit of a pinch of salt because it’s also a Saturday night entertainment programme. What I was going to say is, I do get why people get opinionated. It’s literally a show where you spend a week on in order for someone to judge something, and if you don’t agree with the way they’ve judged something, you’ll say something else.
“But I think the bit that I’ve taken away from it is there’s definitely ways to go about it, and I think there’s been a few things that have been said about Amber, about Kaz, about Bal, like I mean all of us. All of us get it, but it’s like I think it I’ve seen a lot of people say that specifically on Twitter and TikTok this year, it’s been an influx in like people just unnecessarily being like mean.
“Like realistically, say I’m a s**t dancer. I don’t really care. But to make it personal and stuff is just weird. At the end of the day, the dance off is almost entirely down to the public. So if you’re unhappy with who’s in it, then all you can do is vote, and I know then people are going to be like, ‘Oh, but it’s unfair because people have got these fan bases’. All you can do is vote, unfortunately. That’s just like the the way it is.”
One X user posted a section of George speaking on the Useless Hotline podcast and said: “Well said George it’s gotten way too nasty this series it’s just a tv show at the end of the day.”
One fan on X replied to the video saying: “It’s gotten so mean this year! saw a post just bashing everything George says and does saying he’s ’coasting on by because of fans’ and that he’s ‘unbelievably ungrateful for this’ and ‘doesn’t give a shit by giving the absolute minimum’.
“Like huh? are we watching the same George?”
Another fan added: “It is entertainment we should appreciate all the dancers for doing their best.”
You can watch Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday, December 13 from 6.35pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
