Brutal Wayne Rooney doesn’t hold back as World Cup final half-time show divides fans

The World Cup final half-time show featured a number of A-listers

The World Cup half-time show has divided the opinion of the viewing public, with a star-studded performers’ list entertaining the crowd during the break of the final.

With Spain and Argentina playing out a rather turgid first 45 minutes in New Jersey, the game ended 0-0 at the interval and all eyes quickly turned to the much-publicised half-time show.

Football’s governing body FIFA had organised a Super Bowl-style show for the break, with a star-studded line-up of music acts set to perform.

Curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, the show saw Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira and K-pop band BTS all take to the stage in front of the 82,500-capacity crowd at the MetLife Stadium and the billions watching around the world.

Earlier this week, FIFA faced backlash after it was reported that the half-time show could last up to 30 minutes, in what would be a breach of the International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) Laws of the Game.

In the end they were forced to cut it down to 17 minutes long.

It began with music legend Madonna dancing to a melody of her old hits, bizarrely accompanied by Brazilian football stars Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.

Then came BTS with their song Dynamite, before Ted Lasso actor Jason Sudeikis, in character, introduced Bieber.

The show then came to an end with Colombian legend Shakira, performing Dai Dai with Burna Boy, the official song of the World Cup 2026.

The official anthem, as with previous tracks from the tournament, has been celebrated over the last few weeks, bringing nations from across the world together for one occasion.

Coldplay star Martin and the Muppets then rounded things off on the pitch with Venezuelan orchestra conductor Gustavo Dudamel, of the prestigious New York Philharmonic.

The show, naturally, saw viewers torn, with may expressing their opinions online.

One said: “That was actually alright, you know.”

Another added: “This feels a bit like that Simpsons episode when Bart and Milhouse eat too many sweets.”

A third said: “This doesn’t feel like the World Cup final. It’s all very weird. Just feels like some football is occasionally taking place around some random nonsense and shouting.”

Hollywood actor Hugh Grant said: “If football was processed cheese.”

Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, in the BBC studio, was pretty blunt in his own assessment.

“I like a lot of those artists, but I thought it was cr*p,” he said, prompting laughs from Micah Richards, Joe Hart and host Gabby Logan.

“Mine was when it finished,” he said of his favourite part. Rooney added: “I like a lot of those artists but I thought it was cr*p. I did, honestly, it just didn’t get me going, I wanted the football to come back on.”

He later explained that he believed Justin Bieber’s performance was “flat”.

“I liked Burna Boy, I like Bieber, I like Shakira but that was too flat,” he fumed.

‘Snog scabs’ are the unexpected consequence of a really good date

'Snog scabs' are the unexpected consequence of a really good date
Have fun explaining this one to your coworkers on Monday morning (Picture: Getty Images)

Sunlight till 10pm, three glasses of wine, and a hot and heavy snogging session in the middle of Soho. That’s what summer is all about.

But after a sizzling date, you wake up in the morning, only to take one look in the mirror and see a red, irritated rash developing on your chin.

It’s the by product of playing tonsil tennis with a man sporting a beard, stubble or even just a 5 o’clock shadow.

Often referred to as ‘beard rash’ or ‘beard burn’, these not-so-sexy souvenirs have recently been given a new name: ‘snog scabs’.

What is a snog scab?

For anyone who’s exclusively dated women or hairless men before, a snog scab is a type of skin irritation typically caused by facial hair rubbing against the skin.

Ask Metro

Use AI to go deeper into the stories you care about – powered by Metro and trusted publications.

Coined by TikToker by Claire Marie, she recently revealed her own ‘facial injury’ in a video.

She told Metro that this recent scab has definitely been her ‘most intense.’

She adds: ‘Usually it doesn’t crop up after just one evening of snogging, it typically takes multiple offences.’

Claire says that when you’ve been with someone for a while ‘the intensity of the snogging changes’, and therefore snog scab is less likely, but for now, she’s considering making a few changes.

‘Maybe I need to adjusting kissing styles to avoid further issues in the future,’ she ponders.

Emma Coleman, a dermatology registered general nurse (RGN), tells Metro that it’s officially known as ‘friction dermatitis’.

She explains: ‘Coarse stubble acts like sandpaper, creating tiny micro abrasions on the skin and there can be a particularly nasty reaction if the person affected has pre-existing eczema or sensitive skin.

‘In some cases it can flare into contact dermatitis or mild bacterial folliculitis if the follicles get irritated.’

While these burns tend to be localised to your face, it can occur anywhere on the body — including your neck, chest, or genitals.

The repeated rubbing strips away the skin’s protective layer and leads to inflammation.

Rovie Hernandez, 28, has had his fair share of snog scabs over the years. In fact, he shares he’s ‘currently recovering one from the weekend.’

A Londoner with a heavy appreciation for make out sessions, he tells Metro that it only happens when he kisses men with stubble as opposed to ‘full beards.’

‘Every time I’ve kissed a man with stubble I’ve had a rash pop up. It usually only lasts for a few days but it’s quite irritated,’ he shares.

There are thousands of videos on social media from girls sharing their own experiences with snog scabs — ranging from minor cases involving facial irritation to severe physical burns.

In July, one creator, @minalovesyousm, racked up well over five million views over the course of a dozen or so videos documenting her extreme beard burn.

For Mina, her snog scab was so disastrous it actually resulted in part of her chin skin being rubbed off.

Have you ever had a snog scab?

  • Yes – it was a total nightmareCheck

  • No! Clean shaven men are the way forwardCheck

How do you treat a snog scab?

If you have a thing for grizzly men, then you’re going to need to focus on curing a snog scab, rather than prevention.

Thankfully, there are some ways you can soothe your irritated chin.

Nurse Emma explains: ‘Treatment advice is to use a dermatologically-approved moisturiser, avoid harsh products and let the skin rest.’

And if you’re in some serious pain, you might need a trip to your GP.

‘Do get the rash checked if it’s blistering, painful or not settling down,’ Emma says.

‘A short course of mild steroid cream may be required in particularly bad cases.’

Other tips online include using a cold compress for 10 to 20 minutes every two to three hours, as well as utilising skincare products with ingredients such as chamomile and aloe vera.

Of course, treating the irritation is one thing, but much like the nostalgic hickey, explaining your snog scab to friends and coworkers is another story.

One romantic, Lucy*, a teacher at a secondary school in Cambridge, shared with Metro that she had been dreading going into work after developing a snog scab after a recent second date.

However, that same weekend, she crashed her bike, and while she thankfully managed to walk away relatively unscathed from the incident, the snog scab blended in perfectly with some other bruising, giving an airtight excuse for her passionate facial injury.

Every cloud, right?

NADINE DORRIES: I have witnessed first-hand what happens to new Prime Ministers when they enter No 10… and this is why Andy Burnham will be out by May

Published

on

Andy Burnham is no Boris. And he is about to discover that it won¿t be him dictating the narrative but ¿events, dear boy, events¿

There’s a phrase beloved of civil servants tasked with assisting a newly appointed Secretary of State in their first weeks in the job: ‘He’s/she’s drinking from a firehose.’

I heard it several times in my own ministerial career. It describes the sense of being overwhelmed by the high-speed flood of information, tasks and responsibilities suddenly bestowed on you.

For a new Prime Minister, the experience is amplified many hundreds of times over as I witnessed close-up when Boris Johnson took office.

I would argue that no one wanted the job more or was better prepared than Boris, but even he was shocked by the enormity and weight of the decisions he had to take in his first days.

Andy Burnham is no Boris. And he is about to discover that it won’t be him dictating the narrative but ‘events, dear boy, events’.

Nationally and globally, he’ll find himself at the centre of situations he has no prior knowledge of, or experience to fall back on. Every major decision will land on his desk. Every word he utters will have an impact – angering or reassuring political opponents and allies, other world leaders, and moving markets.

From now on, he’ll be on the backfoot, no longer in control of his own time, his diary or his destiny. Not even what he wears!

Andy Burnham is no Boris. And he is about to discover that it won’t be him dictating the narrative but ‘events, dear boy, events’

A civil servant will organise his official wardrobe with a morning suit and black tie always at the ready for any sudden death announcement. A dark blue T-shirt won’t cut it any longer. Reality will have truly bitten Andy Burnham on Day One once the photo-ops were over and the smiling No 10 officials who turned out to welcome their new boss returned to their desks. It’s then the security briefing will have taken place – just the new PM and his intelligence chiefs.

He will have learned of the risks the country faces from Russia, China, Iran et al. He’ll have signed the letters of last resort – the four identical handwritten orders instructing the commanders of our nuclear subs how to respond if Britain’s chain of command is wiped out during a nuclear attack.

I’ll guarantee he left the meeting shell-shocked and humbled as the burdens of his new role sank in.

He will have been introduced to the civil servants who’ll run his private office and, despite what people think about civil servants, they will be among the best and most competent. They will have given him his first 24-hour agenda – proof his life is no longer his own.

Of course, there was a Cabinet to sort out, the fallout from sackings to deal with, and then the numerous ministerial appointments down the ranks. But there will also be long, long days of back-to-back briefings – sometimes every 15 minutes – as the PM is brought up to speed on every aspect of his new job. Trips back to Manchester to run No 10 of the North? I doubt they’ll ever materialise.

While all this is happening, every MP who thought they were getting a Cabinet job but didn’t, or anyone to whom he made a promise, every leader of every trade union or organisation in which the Government has an interest will be calling, emailing, texting him with congratulations – and endless questions.

His political aides will be agitating to start planning and implementing policy, but Burnham won’t have the luxury of time to come up with the strategies needed to deliver on defence, education, homelessness or housebuilding as breathlessly referenced in that incoherent Downing Street speech yesterday. Because the truth is that Andy Burnham has entered No 10 with neither a plan nor a team with the required national political skills and knowledge.

Yes, he’s got the approval of Labour MPs (for now) and the unions (ditto). They’ve all bought into his nebulous message of hope without once asking how he will achieve it.

It is just possible that if he had had a period of grace, say three months in which Starmer had stayed in post, to transition from provincial mayor to Prime Minister, he would survive longer than the nine months I predict it will take to all fall apart. We could be facing an election as soon as next May.

Our new PM will have woken this morning struggling to comprehend his first 24 hours and praying it will get easier.

From his first meeting at 8am to 10pm when he tackles his Red Box and looks at the next day’s agenda, he should know he’ll be drinking from that firehose every hour for weeks and months to come.

Harry and Meghan in a financial jam

Call me a cynic but I have my doubts about the reported ‘rapprochement’ between the Sussexes and the King.

I don’t doubt that Charles was delighted to meet the grandchildren he’s not seen in four years, but one has to question the timing.

The Netflix money well has dried up and Meghan reportedly has $5 million worth of jam to shift before its looming best before date.

Meanwhile, Harry is apparently bored with life in California. What other option do they have but to rekindle their relationship with The Firm which is the only reason they had any commercial value in the first place.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s just an attempt to reboot their tarnished brand.

The pair know they have a diminishing window of opportunity, because I can’t see Prince William showing them much love when he becomes king.

So, what does the future hold for Harry and Meghan? Well, to paraphrase an old saying, as money goes out of the door, love flies out through the window…

 Rooney the cup winner

England may have been thwarted in their World Cup ambitions (again) but Wayne Rooney has emerged an unlikely winner.

His reinvention as a no-nonsense commentator and insightful analyst of the beautiful game has been a revelation.

And his on-screen summing up of the abysmal half-time show during the final was priceless – if unrepeatable!

Two friends, both slightly older than me, invited me to join them and others for drinks on Sunday.

‘We need someone to remind us of what it is we’re talking about when we forget mid-sentence,’ one jokingly told me.

I’m sorry to say, as we sipped our G&Ts in the sunshine, I was no use whatsoever.

Did the World Cup halftime show with Madonna and Bieber elevate or embarrass football’s greatest stage?

World Cup fans branded FIFA’s controversial first-ever World Cup halftime show starring Madonna and Justin Bieber a ‘disaster’ on Sunday – as the spectacle divided viewers around the world.

Argentina and Spain superstars Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal were forced to share the stage on Sunday at MetLife Stadium as the Super Bowl-inspired performance got underway – before Spain triumphed 1-0 over Argentina in extra time.

The futuristic segment began with Madonna, 67, singing her 2000 hit Music, accompanied by giddy Brazilian World Cup legends Ronaldo Nazario and Ronaldinho.

The toned music legend was dressed head-to-toe in Saint Laurent, wowing in a pink satin teddy jacket and corset, mini shorts and lace-up boots, paired with stockings as she embraced the soccer icons, before they drove her out into the stadium.

The unlikely trio then posed up on the grass and smiled at the crowds.

Bieber, 32, made a starkly different impact on the crowd as he stepped out with nothing but a guitar to sing a World Cup themed version of his song, Everything Hallelujah.

The singer was bizarrely subbed onto the pitch by Jason Sudeikis, playing his manager alter-ego Ted Lasso.

Shakira returned to the World Cup stage as she flaunted her toned abs in a pink and yellow sequined bodysuit to perform her hit Dai Dai, with Burna Boy, while K-pop sensations BTS regaled the crowd with Dynamite.

The show was also blasted by former World Cup England star Wayne Rooney, 41, who joked his favorite part of the show was ‘when it finished’.

‘To be honest mine was when it finished I like a lot of those artists but to be honest I thought it was c**p’, he fumed.

‘I did honestly. It just didn’t get me going, I wanted the football to be back on. It was a bit flat. I like Burna Boy I like Shakira I like Bieber but that was too flat.’

Fans were left in hysterics by Rooney’s comment, with one user on X laughing: ‘Wayne Rooney on the halftime show actually made me LOL and then ‘I like a lot of the artists, but I thought it was c**p’.

While Liam Gallagher savaged ‘This is like a bad trip’, before adding: ‘It’s a good job I’ve got my spiritual socks on or that halftime entertainment could have tipped me over the edge’.

Olivia Wilde reflects on the ‘trauma’ of her split from Harry Styles playing out in public and the ‘multidimensional scandals’ of Don’t Worry Darling

Olivia Wilde has reflected on the 'trauma' of her split from Harry Styles playing out in public at the time her movie Don't Worry Darling released in 2022

Olivia Wilde has reflected on the ‘trauma’ of her split from Harry Styles playing out in public at the time her movie Don’t Worry Darling was released in 2022.

Harry and Olivia dated for nearly two years, from late 2020 to November 2022.

Shortly before their split, Olivia’s psychological thriller, starring Florence Pugh and Harry, was encompassed with rumours of feuds and fallouts.

Despite soaring to the top of the box office, the 2022 movie was overshadowed by a feud between Olivia and Florence, rumours of pay disputes, and allegations that Olivia’s romance with singer Harry made crew members ‘uncomfortable’.

Four years later, Olivia has discussed the ‘multidimensional scandals’ of Don’t Worry Darling in the latest episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast.

During the interview, Louis said: ‘We were talking about how when the film came out it was derailed by publicity. I mean many multidimensional scandals.

‘Your relationship at the time was breaking up. You had a well-publicised relationship with your co-star Harry Styles and, there was a kind of a misogynistic dimension to a lot of the coverage of the drama, the fallout.’

Olivia, who is currently on a press run for her new film The Invite (pictured), said it has been 'healing' in contrast to the backlash that surrounded Don¿t Worry Darling

Olivia, who is currently on a press run for her new film The Invite (pictured), said it has been ‘healing’ in contrast to the backlash that surrounded Don’t Worry Darling

Olivia said: ‘I think it did hurt the film for sure because we didn’t get to have the conversations about what the film was trying to say, which was a shame because so many people worked so hard to make that film in the depths of COVID.

‘We made the film for $30million. I think it looks like a much more expensive film because of the work of people like Matty Libatique, who shot the film, Katie Byron, who production designed the film.’

She added: ‘But we never got to talk about that, so I think it hurt the film. It hurt me for sure, because I was so naive up until that point about the grinder, the garbage disposal that the internet can be.

‘So at this point, I have enough of a perspective on it and that allows me to experience it as a fascinating time. It is interesting to witness a tornado from the inside.’

Olivia, who is currently on a press run for her new film The Invite, said it has been ‘healing’ in contrast to the backlash that surrounded Don’t Worry Darling.

She added: ‘Well, it’s interesting because this is my first time back into the press cycle since then and I did wonder, would this feel quite traumatising?

‘I find that the conversations around The Invite are so wonderfully interesting to me, and I’ve actually been allowed to have them. So, it’s been actually kind of healing because I understand that it’s not always a garbage disposal.’

Her new marital comedy, starring herself, Seth RogenPenelope Cruz and Edward Norton, has proven to be a hit, having sparked a fierce 72-hour, $10million (£7.2million) bidding war which resulted in A24 winning against Warner Bros and Focus Features.

The director has received rave reviews for her new movie, with fans lavishing praise on her remarkable return to directorial duties.

Olivia, who made her directorial debut with the comedy Booksmart in 2019, received backlash for the alleged conflict with Florence and her relationship with Harry during filming of Don’t Worry Darling.

Florence played Harry’s onscreen wife Alice Chambers in the psychological thriller which was directed by Olivia.

Shortly before their split, Olivia's psychological thriller, starring Florence Pugh and Harry, was encompassed with rumours of feuds and fallouts

Shortly before their split, Olivia’s psychological thriller, starring Florence Pugh and Harry, was encompassed with rumours of feuds and fallouts

Sources at the time claimed Olivia and Florence allegedly got into a ‘screaming match’ with one another during filming, as the director would often disappear with her boyfriend Harry.

Reports also suggest Florence was upset with Olivia for hooking up with Harry during production while still married to Jason Sudeikis – before they split in November 2021.

The apparent feud intensified when Olivia referred to Florence as ‘Miss Flo’ and said she needed a ‘wake-up call’ during the rehearsal period of the movie, in a video to actor Shia LaBeouf that was leaked.

As well as texts, Shia provided Variety with a video that Olivia allegedly sent him on August 19, 2020, two days after he is said to have quit.

In the video Olivia is heard saying she is ‘not ready to give up on this yet,’ as she appears to beg the actor to reconsider. Olivia is then said to allude to tension between Shia and lead star Florence.

‘I feel like I’m not ready to give up on this yet, and I too am heartbroken and I want to figure this out,’ Olivia allegedly says in the video.

‘You know, I think this might be a bit of a wake-up call for Miss Flo [Florence Pugh], and I want to know if you’re open to giving this a shot with me, with us.’

Olivia goes on: ‘If she really commits, if she really puts her mind and heart into it at this point and if you guys can make peace – and I respect your point of view, I respect hers – but if you guys can do it, what do you think? Is there hope? Will you let me know?’

Reports also emerged that Harry – who had only starred in one movie, Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk in 2017, before he was cast in Don’t Worry Darling – was paid three times more than his Oscar-nominated co-star Florence.

Showbiz Galore claimed the Midsomer star was paid $700,000 for the role, while the Watermelon Sugar star was given $2.5million, but Olivia has claimed this was not the case.

She told Variety: ‘There has been a lot out there that I largely don’t pay attention to. But the absurdity of invented clickbait and subsequent reaction regarding a nonexistent pay disparity between our lead and supporting actors really upset me.

‘I’m a woman who has been in this business for over 20 years, and it’s something that I have fought for myself and others, especially being a director. There is absolutely no validity to those claims.’

Olivia said she thinks the 'multidimensional scandals hurt the film and her for sure' as she reflected on the backlash

Despite the continued talk of all the drama on set, Don’t Worry Darling’s cinematographer, Matthew Libatique, told Hollywood Reporter that it was all a bunch of bologna.

‘When I hear that there are rumors of acrimony on the set, I reject it. It wasn’t apparent at all, to be honest,’ he claimed.

‘From my standpoint, the stories are completely untrue when it comes to being on-set. I can’t speak to postproduction at all.

‘Whatever happened, it happened way after I left… I was never witness to anything. And I didn’t feel anything. You know, you get a feeling that there might be something going on, and I didn’t feel anything.’

In addition, a total of 40 individuals who worked on the movie, including producer Miri Yoon, came forward to release a joint statement obtained by the Daily Mail after the movie came out, in an attempt to ‘correct’ the ‘absurd’ and ‘completely false’ claims that were made about the set.

‘As a crew, we’ve avoided addressing the absurd gossip surrounding the movie we’re so proud of, but feel the need to correct the anonymous “sources” quoted in a recent article,’ the statement began.

‘Any allegations about unprofessional behavior on the set are completely false. Olivia is an incredible leader and director who was present with and involved in every aspect of production.

‘She ran this set with class and respect for everyone involved. There was never a screaming match between our director and anyone, let alone a member of our cast.’

In an interview with Elle, Olivia also addressed their feud once again, while claiming that her ‘life was torn to shreds’ by the public as a result of all the scrutiny over the flick.

Although she did not address any of the scandals specifically during her interview, she slammed the number of ‘untruths’ about her life that have been shared in recent months, and compared all the talk surrounding the movie to being on ‘a reality show.’

‘It is shocking to see so many untruths about yourself traded as fact,’ she told the publication.

‘Florence had a really wise comment that we didn’t sign up for a reality show, and I love that she put it that way, because it’s as though the general public feels that if you are making something that you’re selling to the public, you somehow have accepted that your life will be torn to shreds by a pack of wolves. No, that’s actually not part of the job description. Never was.’

Bolton residents react to Andy Burnham becoming PM

Andy Burnham became PM after succeeding Sir Keir Starmer, promising to tackle rough sleeping, ease the cost of living, and deliver a new economic direction for the country.

Residents in Bolton have now shared what they hope his government will achieve, while questioning how his promises will be delivered.

Adrian Yapp said: “So far, what I’ve heard, it’s the same old. He’s picking up a mess, promised a lot, so did the previous, but he has a hard job.

Every department needs money, railroads need money, education needs money, and defence. Where’s it going to come from? I’ve not heard any of that yet.”

Adrian Yapp (Image: NQ)

Mr Yapp said he believed Mr Burnham had performed well during his time leading Greater Manchester.

He pointed to job creation and Mr Burnham’s leadership during the Covid pandemic as positives, while wishing him success in his new role.

He added: “I thought he did a great job as mayor, created a lot of jobs, excellent in Covid, and he did a great job.

“I wish him well as I would wish anyone well in a new job and gets it right.”

Marian Kitchen and Darren Wilcott also said they wanted to give the new prime minister time before judging him.

Ms Kitchen and Mr Wilcott said: “Give him a chance, he can’t do worse than Starmer or Boris Johnson.

“He did alright for Manchester with the buses and things like that.”

Sofiya Mishkinite said she hoped Mr Burnham would improve life for people across the country.

She said: “It’s heavily corrupt with people arguing over small things. I hope he fixes things, makes things a lot better and stable.

“I hope he pays attention to the public and how the public is affected, as well as making things come back to normal.

“I want him to he improve equality; I just hope he really helps people see that people need equality, and to bring back peace.”

Mr Burnham used his first day as prime minister to pledge action on rough sleeping, saying he wanted to end it as soon as he can.

Marcus Rashford is open to rejoining United training at the end of his summer break after collecting a bronze medal at the World Cup. The forward has not played for United since December 2024, though his next steps have seemed uncertain since Barcelona opted not to trigger their £26m buy option at the end of his loan deal this summer.

A second clause that allowed clubs to sign Rashford for £40m also expired this month. BBC Sport reports that Rashford, who has two years left on his contract, is “relaxed” about the thought of linking back up with the United squad in training.

The 28-year-old is also claimed to have a more positive dynamic with his ex-teammate and new boss Carrick compared to his “confrontational relationship” with former United manager Ruben Amorim. In his latest spell away from Old Trafford, Rashford notched 14 goals and assists apiece for Barcelona last term, winning La Liga.

Upon completing his World Cup duties, Rahford wrote on social media: “Keep believing in us. Our time will come. Now it’s time for me to rest, reflect, spend some quality time with family and friends, and come back a better version of myself.”

£8m transfer complete

United have completed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur prospect Tynan Thompason. The 18-year-old, who was named in Champions League matchday squads for Spurs last season, has arrived for an initial £4m, plus a further £4m in potential add-ons.

The winger is set to start his United career with the club’s U21s but could force his way into first team plans. The deal with Spurs also includes a 15 per cent sell-on clause.

Announcing the transfer, a United statement said: ” Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young winger Tynan Thompson, subject to registration. The England youth international has joined from Tottenham Hotspur.

“The 18-year-old scored 13 goals and contributed six assists last season across Under-18s to Under-21s level, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games. His performances earned him opportunities within Spurs’ first-team matchday squads. Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”

Cindy's big secret confirmed in Hollyoaks as Nancy exposes the truth | Soaps
Nancy is determined to get answers about Cindy (Picture: Lime Pictures / Metro)

Cindy Cunningham (Stephanie Waring) returned to Hollyoaks with a bang but the real reason behind her comeback remains shrouded in mystery – that is, until next week.

The legendary show favourite staged an almighty return two years after her controversial exit and so far it’s been everything we could’ve hoped for, with Cindy reminding us all in mere seconds just how iconic she truly is.

But while fans were excited to see her back in the village it’s safe to say that Beth Keane (Rebecca Ryan) didn’t share the same feelings, with Cindy having been blackmailing her for weeks.

The ins and outs of what’s going on there remain to be seen but Nancy Osborne (Jessica Fox) is determined to get answers and thus she proceeds to quiz Darren (Ashley Taylor Dawson) on what he knows.

When Darren proves fruitless, Nancy turns her attention to Cindy, who is eager to evade all sorts of questions from the head teacher.

However, Nancy won’t let this go – and nor will Beth, for that matter – as they both proceed to quiz Cindy on the reasons for her return.

At her absolute limit, Cindy blurts out the truth.

The question is: just what is Cindy hiding? And how will Nance and Beth react to her revelation?

Later, Abigail and Cindy enjoy some bonding time and head to the park kiosk for some caffeine.

However, they discover Maddox Keane (Sam Meyer) and Dee Dee Hutchinson (Chloe Atkinson), who have just had sex for the first time.

Tarot card for Aries for Leo season: Queen of Coins

Meaning: This is all about leadership. Maybe you’re ready to literally take on a promotion or responsibility increase in your role, maybe in your family or community. Perhaps you’re going to start a solo enterprise or side line.

You feel strong, competent, and like you’ve outgrown what you’re doing right now, you want more, and you want more scope and opportunity… and reward. Go for it. This card is a great omen that Leo season will bring you the upwards mobility you seek and deserve.

Tarot card for Taurus for Leo season: Ten of Wands

Meaning: This is all about less is more. You have a secret belief that being popular, outgoing, and in demand is effort, too much hard work, draining. In some cases, yes. The wrong crowd can drain a social battery faster than fast. But, amongst friends and kindred souls, that’s not true.

I think it’s possible you’ve been hanging out too much with the wrong crowd; they’re not your tribe. Find the right one this Leo season, Taurus, and you will feel energised and full of beans, letting your Venus flirty nature out to play and feeling good about it. Experiment with your friendships.

Tarot card for Gemini for Leo season: Five of Swords

Meaning: This is all about letting your inner lion roar, and showing ’em you’re not just a cute kitty cat! All Geminis have huge capacity to be scary and dominant, but choose not to because it’s so tiring, negative, and often counterproductive. So you tend to play nice.

But some folk mistake kindness for weakness, and it’s now time to show them you have sharp teeth and claws that they never saw coming. Leo always sticks up for the underdog, and right now you are being painted as the underdog, so fight for yourself. Be assertive, clear, and unshakeable… they will soon be regretting they awoke the ‘other twin’.

Tarot card for Cancer for Leo season: Ace of Cups

Meaning: This is all about starring in your very own love story. A new suitor is going to enter the stage and you will catch each other’s eye and possibly fall in love right then and there! A bold claim? Yes, but Leo season is bold, and your happy ever after was never in doubt.

So, be social, be outgoing, be visible. Put yourself in the path of true love. If you’re happily attached, then this could be a fertility omen (should you be seeking that outcome), a new friendship, or even a rekindled family tie. Love songs are the theme tune of your Leo season — what bliss!

Tarot card for Leo for Leo season: Nine of Wands

Meaning: This is all about perseverance. Sometimes the applause is loudest when you feel worst. Folk watch and admire those who tackle their problems or hardships with grace and determination, it sets an example and creates dignity and respect (the very things you most want).

Use your own star sign’s season not only to party and celebrate, but to do something difficult and onerous. Take it on. Face it. Make it submit to your regal lioness will! Others will be amazed. This is you being the ultimate protagonist and hero. Go for it — it’ll be easier than you think.

Tarot card for Virgo for Leo season: Ace of Swords

Meaning: This is all about telling the whole truth. You are ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, but you’re also a practical Earth sign so you always think very carefully about what you say. Maybe too carefully…

This Leo season, speak up, speak out, express your inner thoughts and feelings, say it how it is (to your mind, anyway), then listen well to what comes back. When you spark up a lively topic and express a spiky view, you will hear things back that surprise you, and that’s the beauty of this. True communication is unfolding, and you started it. Enjoy the dialogue, don’t back down, but listen well. This is all new news.

Tarot card for Libra for Leo season: Two of Swords

Meaning: This is all about you calling the shots and making big decisions. Don’t do what others want you to, just to please them. Don’t say yes to things you’re not excited to actually do. Don’t opt for the easiest, lowest energy route ahead. Choose your own adventure carefully!

This Leo season will bring ‘main character plot twist’ choices. Treat them as such. Be brave and aim for a higher self energy and outcome. Do what will bring most reward in the long run and provides greatest potential for growth, new ideas and learning. You’re the director and script-writer of your own movie right now.

Meaning: This is all about fighting for what you want. Some things come easy, some don’t. What you want right now is of the latter type, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not meant for you. It just means it’s a harder job to acquire it, but Leo season and the formidable, unstoppable Knight of Swords are here to help.

Dig in, stand tall, speak up. Know your goal and aim true. Don’t get distracted or waylaid. Keep going, give it your all and see how far you get by mid August… I think you will be surprised. And don’t worry too much about ruffling feathers along the way either!

You are the luckiest star sign as you are ruled by Jupiter, so when the going’s good… go harder! Travel and international connections may be involved, this could be about broadening the scope of what you’re doing well, making it accessible to more folk. Good luck, Sag — not that you need it.

Tropical Storm Bertha threatens US Gulf coast

Published

on

The image shows Donaghadee harbour with a white lighthouse in the background. In the foreground are a number of colourful boats.

A tropical storm swirling in the US Gulf is expected to bring heavy rainfall and a “life-threatening storm surge” to the south-east of the country, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Tropical Storm Bertha was located about 105 miles (165km) south of Panama City, Florida, carrying windspeeds of 40mph (65 km/h) on Monday.

“Bertha will move near or along the northern Gulf coast during the next several days,” said the Miami-based NHC.

The storm could trigger flooding and storm surges in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi as it drifts west towards Texas. Some areas could receive 8in (20cm) of rain by Friday, and “isolated” tornados could spawn in Florida, say forecasters.

In an updated bulletin on Monday evening, forecasters said that the tropical storm may build in strength over the next several days, before potentially making landfall in New Orleans, Louisiana, by Wednesday.

The bulletin added that tropical storm-force winds extended 70 miles outward from the centre of the storm, and that the storm was moving north-west at around 3mph.

“A tropical storm watch is in effect for Ochlockonee River, Florida, westward to the Jefferson/Plaquemines Parish border in Louisiana,” forecasters said.

Surges are expected to be between 1-4ft along parts of the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines, officials said. Flash flooding could occur in urban areas.

The storm’s arrival comes amid sweltering summer heat in the US south.

In New Orleans, sandbags are being distributed to stave off flood waters. Residents have also been asked to ensure that local storm drains are clear.

Bertha is forecast to weaken back to a tropical depression on Thursday and may dissipate by the end of the week as it nears the Texas coast.

This is only the second named storm of the season, after Tropical Storm Arthur brought some flooding to the US last month.

Exact date Cambridgeshire could see 41C scorcher in August heatwave

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

The UK is set for another heatwave with temperatures expected to soar into the 40s in August, according to weather maps

The UK is bracing itself for another heatwave, with Cambridgeshire amongst the counties predicted to swelter in 41C temperatures that forecasters suggest could mark the hottest day ever recorded in Britain.

The existing record stands at 40.3C, set during the blistering heatwave of July 2022, but WXCharts weather maps suggest that temperatures could climb as high as 41C in August.

According to the Met Office, conditions may turn “very warm again by the start of August” with GFS weather models indicating temperatures rising from 29C on July 29.

The highest temperatures are anticipated in the south, with peaks of 31C on July 29.

On July 30 and 31 temperatures remain at around 31C.

Then on August 1 temperatures soar into the forties, with a swathe of the country from Sussex up to Lincolnshire – including London – potentially experiencing 40C.

Several areas in Cambridgeshire are amongst those that may see highs of 41C, surpassing the current record for the nation’s hottest temperature. Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex have also been forecast to endure this extreme heat.

Elsewhere throughout the country, Britons are likely to still roast in the high thirties. In the Midlands, the weather maps indicate highs of 38C and in Yorkshire the mercury could hit 37C.

Parts of Wales are also likely to feel the heat, though temperatures are expected to be cooler at around 32C.

As these sweltering conditions are forecast, weather maps have turned a vivid deep red, suggesting that temperatures could climb significantly above the seasonal norm, according to the Mirror.

The Met Office’s long range outlook indicates that conditions for the remainder of July are anticipated to be “warmest in the south” before becoming “very warm again by the start of August”.

These scorching periods could also persist further into the month.

The Met Office forecast for August 2 to August 16 states: “Temperatures will very likely remain above normal, with potential for further hot spells, particularly in the south.”

Nevertheless, there will also be a risk of storms. It adds: “Although most areas may see dry weather for much of the period, occasional summertime thunderstorms are possible on some days given the right ingredients”.
